Good riddance: The webs top deepfake porn site is shutting down

Mashable - 1 hour 8 min ago

Mr. Deepfakes is no more.

One of the internet's biggest destinations for nonconsensual deepfake porn has announced that it is shutting down. The website, Mr. Deepfakes, has already gone offline, as first noticed by 404 Media. Mr. Deepfakes's URL now redirects to a "shutdown notice" message announcing the end of the site.

Deepfakes are essentially hyperrealistic face-swapping videos that are created with machine-learning technology. Deepfakes became very popular on social media platforms like Reddit in 2017, with users superimposing celebrities' likeness into various movie and TV show clips. For example, one popular deepfake at the time superimposed Arnold Schwarzenegger's face over Bill Hader while the latter impersonated Schwarzenegger in an late night TV interview with Conan O'Brien. However, users also began to use deepfakes to make nonconsensual porn, which digitally inserted celebrities into pornographic videos.

In 2018, Reddit officially banned deepfake porn. Mr. Deepfakes was created in response to the ban, giving those deepfake-creating users somewhere to go to share and consume this nonconsensual content. Little is known about the creator or creators of Mr. Deepfakes. Earlier this year, an investigation by German outlet Der Spiegel claimed to have identified the individual behind the site as a 36-year-old from Toronto.

According to the shutdown message on Mr. Deepfakes, however, the website's end was not by choice. It appears Mr. Deepfakes was forced to pull the plug.

“A critical service provider has terminated service permanently," Mr. Deepfakes' website says in its shutdown notice. "Data loss has made it impossible to continue operation. We will not be relaunching. Any website claiming this is fake. This domain will eventually expire and we are not responsible for future use. This message will be removed around one week."

Mr. Deepfakes did not share what service provider they were using or why the provider cut the website from its service.

The timing of the Mr. Deepfakes shutdown is interesting. Just last week, Congress passed the Take It Down act, which criminalized nonconsensual intimate imagery, such as deepfake porn. The Take It Down act also requires that online platforms take action to remove such content as well.

Google Flights data reveals the cheapest day to book your travel

Mashable - 1 hour 31 min ago

Flying is expensive, and people are always looking for hacks to get a good deal. Luckily for those people, Google Flights — perhaps the most common tool used by air travelershas revealed data showing some of the secrets to traveling for cheap. Among those findings was the cheapest day to book a flight, which could prove super useful the next time you book a vacation.

We parsed through the data and pulled out some key findings for the next time you book a flight.

What's the cheapest day to book a flight?

In short, Tuesday is the cheapest day to book a flight. Not necessarily to actually fly, but to complete the act of booking. Now, be forewarned, this might not save you a ton of money. Google noted Tuesday was historically the cheapest day to book, but, on average, saved just 1.3 percent compared to the most expensive day to book, which is Sunday. Still, 1.3 percent isn't nothing.

Now, as for the day to actually fly, it's pretty simple: avoid weekends. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday are 13 percent cheaper than flying on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Those savings rise to 20 percent for international travel, Google reported. If you've ever perused Google Flights, this tracks. And it makes sense: More folks are willing and able to travel on weekends, thus creating demand and higher prices.

SEE ALSO: New Google Flights feature guarantees the lowest price, pays you back if it’s wrong Other cheap flight hacks

Google noted a few other tips for flying for cheap and, well, they're kind of what you'd expect. Dealing with a layover, for instance, will save you about 25 percent on average, compared to a non-stop flight.

The report from Google also has some interesting notes about when to book travel. Booking Christmas travel is cheapest 58 days before the holiday, for instance, while traveling to Europe tends to be cheapest 94 days before the flight.

In general, it's best to plan ahead and make the final purchase on a Tuesday well before your scheduled takeoff.

The Beats earbuds with a heart rate monitor just got their first price cut ever

Mashable - 1 hour 40 min ago

Save $50: As of May 5, the Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 are on sale for $50 lower than their $249.99 list price. You can grab them at Amazon for just $199.95 (or for a few cents more at Target for $199.99), netting you a 20% discount on new workout buds.

Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 $199.95 at Amazon
$249.99 Save $50.04 Get Deal

You expect a good pair of workout earbuds to come with sweat-proofing and a secure fit, but Beats upped the ante when they included a built-in heart rate monitor with their latest installment.

The Powerbeats Pro 2 launched this past February, promising an improved fit over the past generation, better active noise cancelling, and, of course, the heart-rate monitoring capabilities. The new Beats workout earbuds came with the relatively hefty price tag of $249.99, putting them at the same price point as the Apple AirPods Pro. While they are expensive, as of May 5, you can grab them on sale at Amazon and Target for 20% off, putting them at just $199.95 at the former and $199.99 at the latter.

Though still on the higher end of the price point for workout earbuds, the Powerbeats Pro 2 are designed to deliver a premium experience. If you don't already own a heart rate monitor, having this feature baked into your headphones could be an especially nice bonus. Our sister site PCMag (also owned by Ziff Davis) found the heart rate monitor readings to be fairly accurate, especially compared to the Apple Watch, saying "the earbuds always recorded within a few beats per minute of the watch. That's helpful for those who own and use both, as it means the data collected won't be skewed by one device."

SEE ALSO: The 5 best budget wireless earbuds vetted by our headphones experts

In addition, the ear hook style of these earbuds, carried over from the past generation, keeps these earbuds securely in place. Athletes will also appreciate the IPX4 rating, though they won't withstand submersion in water. Their ANC mode gives you an option to truly lock-in to your music while you sweat, and the touch controls are much better than the competition.

In their usual style, Beats offers several different colorways for these earbuds, including electric orange, hyper purple, jet black, and quick sand.

Skype is finally shutting down

Mashable - 1 hour 57 min ago

Pour one out for the blue "S." After more than two decades, Skype — the once-ubiquitous video-calling app that defined early internet communication — is officially being retired.

As of May 5, Microsoft is shutting down Skype, signaling the end of an era for the service that, in the mid-2000s, was practically synonymous with video calls. Launched in 2003 and scooped up by Microsoft in 2011 for $8.5 billion, Skype was once a juggernaut, peaking at more than 300 million active users in the early 2010s.

SEE ALSO: Microsoft to kill Office support for Windows 10 this year

But in the years since, Skype’s relevance slowly eroded. Messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram chipped away at its user base. Then came Zoom’s pandemic-fueled rise, and Microsoft’s own collaboration tool, Teams, which gradually cannibalized Skype’s core functionality.

Microsoft confirmed the shutdown in February, announcing Teams as the new default for users seeking video calls and messaging. The Skype homepage now reads like a digital gravestone, redirecting visitors to "start using Teams." Paid users can transition to Teams for free, and the company says you’ve got until January 2026 to export your data.

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

Skype isn’t the first iconic tech product to fade into obsolescence — and it won’t be the last. But for a generation that grew up saying "Skype me," it’s a bittersweet goodbye.

The 20th anniversary iPhone model could have an all-screen design

Mashable - 2 hours 57 sec ago

We haven't even seen the iPhone 17 yet, and we're already getting rumors about the iPhone 20.

It's hard to believe, but it's true. The first real rumor about what to expect from the 20th anniversary iPhone, set to launch in 2027, comes from The Information (courtesy of BGR). According to The Information's report, the first big new feature of the 2027 iPhone will be an edge-to-edge display. In other words, it would be all screen from one end of the device to the other, with no notch or dynamic island cutout for the front-facing camera.

That's not to say there won't be a selfie cam, of course. It will just live under the display, which Apple has yet to do in any iPhone so far. Other phones have had some success putting technology underneath the display, like the fingerprint scanner in Google Pixel phones.

SEE ALSO: Apple is planning a new iPhone launch schedule, report claims

This information came alongside a larger report that Apple will be shifting its iPhone release schedule. Rather than dropping every new iPhone model in September, as the company has for many years now, Apple will instead drop the most powerful Pro versions of each iPhone in the fall, while holding the cheaper base models for the following spring. There have already been signs that Apple wants to do annual budget phone releases, so doing a two-pronged release schedule might make some sense.

All of that is on top of more reports about Apple exploring the foldable space, as well as trying to create a new ultra-thin iPhone. It's certainly not a boring time in iPhone-land right now.

Of course, we’re not sure exactly what kind of games are on this thing, but from the product photos, you can probably expect knockoff versions of retro classics like Super Mario Bros., Tetris, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and more.

Report: Government messages on modded Signal clone Telemessage got hacked

Mashable - 2 hours 22 min ago

Mike Waltz and Signal leaks — name a more iconic duo.

Just weeks after accidentally inviting a journalist into a Signal group chat about a classified military op in Yemen, the (now former) National Security Advisor is caught in yet another encrypted messaging meltdown.

According to a report from 404 Media, a hacker accessed a government-used Signal clone developed by TeleMessage, an Israeli company that sells modified versions of encrypted messaging apps like Signal to government agencies. These versions are designed to retain message archives to comply with federal regulations on document retention.

SEE ALSO: WhatsApp, Signal scam leads to Microsoft account hacks. How to spot it.

The hacker claimed to have exploited a vulnerability in the app and reportedly gained access within about 30 minutes. While messages from cabinet members and Waltz were not directly compromised, the breached data included message content, contact information of government personnel, backend login credentials, and additional sensitive material, according to 404 Media.

Waltz's use of Telemessage was reported by 404 Media on April 30 after Reuters photographed him using the app during a cabinet meeting. He was dismissed the following day. While reports indicate that the hack was not the sole reason for his departure, the combination of Signalgate and the Reuters photograph cast the security advisor in a bad light.

Crucially, the hacking incident suggests the archived chat logs are not end-to-end encrypted, raising serious concerns about the security architecture of the government’s communication tools. The use of an unofficial, modded version of Signal already represented a significant risk, one that now appears to have been realized.

A Signal spokesperson, speaking to 404 Media and other outlets, emphasized that the company "cannot guarantee the privacy or security properties of unofficial versions of Signal."

And as of May 5, you can grab Bose and Sony's flagship headphones on sale at Amazon. The Bose QuietComfort Ultra headphones are available for $359, down from their $429 MSRP. Best Bose headphones deal Bose QuietComfort Ultra headphones $359 at Amazon
$429 Save $70 Get Deal Why we like it

Check out our full review on the Bose QC Ultra headphones.

The Bose QuietComfort Ultra headphones are the most comfortable headphones on the market. Three different Mashable shopping team members have used the headphones, and all three came away with this opinion. Their comfort makes them easy to wear for an entire work day or on a flight, and pairs nicely with their 24 hour battery life. Bose offers some of the best noise cancellation out there, though Mashable's Sam Mangino found these headphones in particular to have difficulty blocking higher-pitched sounds quite as effectively as they did lower pitches.

Still, their sound is "rich," as Mangino describes it, continuing on to say: "They tend to run on the quieter end, and I felt like I had to crank the volume a little higher than I do with other headphones, but the sound overall is more detailed." Perhaps their biggest drawbacks are their price point and some finicky controls with multipoint connections. But if you grab them for $70 off, these cons are easier to look past. Though this isn't the lowest price we've ever seen on these headphones (they've dropped down to $329 in the past), this is the best price cut we've seen on the new deep plum colorway. At the time of writing, Amazon marked down other colorways by just $50.

Check out our full review of the Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones.

Sony's flagship headphones have long been standouts for their impressive sound quality, which especially shines with the custom equalizer found on the Sony companion app. When Mashable's deputy editor of shopping and reviews Miller Kern reviewed these headphones, she deemed them, "probably the best-sounding headphones I’ve ever tried."

In addition, they also come with solid noise-cancelling and all-day battery life (30 hours to Bose's 24). Usually, there are two reasons folks are put off from buying these headphones: one, the ear cups don't fold in like their predecessors, the WH-1000XM4 headphones, making them slightly less convenient to take on the go. The other is their price point, which while lower than other premium options, is still up there. While there's nothing to be done about the ear cups, this deal at least addresses the latter issue. In fact, at $279, the XM5s are even cheaper than the XM4s on sale, as of the time of writing.

You can't put a price tag on peace of mind, but you can get pretty close with this Blink home security bundle at Amazon.

As of May 5, the Blink bundle is down to just $159.98 instead of its usual $319.98. That's 50% in savings and $30 cheaper than if you bought each piece separately on sale. It includes the Blink Video Doorbell, three Blink Outdoor 4 cameras, and the Sync Module 2 — everything you need to keep an eye on what's happening around your home.

Whether you're a pet owner, a frequent traveler, or you work long days or nights, the Blink bundle gives you an extra set of eyes and ears around your property. Using the Blink app, you can see who shows up at your door day or night and enjoy live two-way communication with the Blink Video Doorbell. Then, with your Outdoor 4 cameras, you can expand your field of view around your home and get alerted to anything out of the ordinary. The cameras offer infrared night vision, two-way audio, and customizable motion-detection zones. The best part: everything runs on AA batteries. You won't even have to think about changing them or charging them for two years.

Meanwhile, the included Sync Module 2 lets you track and store all of the action in one place. Just plug it in and connect it to your Blink app account to activate your devices. It can connect up to 10 gadgets at once and allows you to control them all from the app.

A single Blink Outdoor 4 camera is typically $89.99, so paying just $159.98 for three cameras, a video doorbell, and the Sync Module 2 is pretty wild.

Trump says he may delay TikTok ban once again

Mashable - 2 hours 55 min ago

It's starting to feel like the TikTok ban that called wolf.

In an interview with Kristen Welker from NBC's Meet the Press, President Donald Trump said he'd consider delaying the TikTok ban for a third time if a deal isn't struck before the deadline.

"Perhaps I shouldn't say this, but I have a little warm spot in my heart for TikTok," Trump said.

This fits with Trump's TikTok-related actions since he took office for the second time. In January, he delayed the TikTok ban for 90 days and, once that deadline wasn't met due to a confluence of issues including a hefty tariff on Chinese goods, he delayed it once more. This, of course, is in stark contrast to Trump's take on TikTok during his first presidential term, in which he tried to ban the app. We all contain multitudes, or something.

"My Administration has been working very hard on a Deal to SAVE TIKTOK, and we have made tremendous progress," Trump wrote in a TruthSocial post on April 4, one of the days he extended the TikTok ban. "The Deal requires more work to ensure all necessary approvals are signed, which is why I am signing an Executive Order to keep TikTok up and running for an additional 75 days."

This comes just two months left on TikTok's deadline. We have access to the app in the U.S. through June 19, at which time there looks like there are three options: Trump extends the deadline once again, TikTok actually gets banned in the U.S., or TikTok divests from its Chinese parent company, ByteDance.

Lego builds life-size F1 cars for Miami GP — made of 400,000 Lego bricks

Mashable - 3 hours 3 min ago

Before McLaren’s Oscar Piastri dominated the Miami Grand Prix, Lego stole the spotlight on the Formula 1 grid.

For the driver parade, Lego unleashed its life-size, brick-built F1 cars — and the grid turned into a playground, with superstar drivers grinning like kids behind the wheel, bumping into each other, and leaving a trail of Lego debris on the track, as Max Verstappen told ESPN.

"That was the most fun drivers’ parade we’ve ever had," Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton told reporters, even after taking a hit from an eager Alpine on the back straight. (The only confirmed casualty of the day was Mercedes driver George Russell's iPhone.)

According to ESPN, each car was constructed from roughly 400,000 Lego bricks and engineered with a steel chassis, electric drivetrain, hydraulic brakes, and power steering, making them not only accurate to the brick-built toy line but fully functional for the drivers.

The spectacle wasn’t just a hit on track; as clips of Lego cars cruising, colliding, and cramming two F1 stars into tiny cockpits hit social media, fans lit up the internet with memes, admiration, and plenty of double takes.

For one lap in Miami, the ultra-competitive world of Formula 1 hit pause — just long enough for its stars to laugh, crash gently, and remember what it feels like to simply play.

Netflix, Disney stocks fall as Trump announced 100% tariff on foreign films

Mashable - 3 hours 5 min ago

Netflix, Disney, and other entertainment companies saw their stock prices tumble Monday morning, following President Donald Trump's latest tariff pronouncement. Trump has floated a 100 percent tariff on foreign-produced movies, which could mean a major shift in how studios do business.

As of around 10 a.m. ET, Netflix was down about 2 percent. Disney had actually rebounded to near-even after taking a sharp fall when markets opened. Other entertainment companies saw shares fall, too. Shares in Lionsgate had dropped more than 6 percent, Paramount was down 1.5 percent, and Warner Bros. Discovery had fallen about 1 percent. Of course, share prices are liable to change throughout the day, as Monday morning had already shown.

No matter how share prices move throughout the day or week, a 100 percent tariff on foreign-produced movies would represent a major hurdle for entertainment companies. Trump posted about the change on his right-wing platform, Truth Social. He wrote:

"The Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death. Other Countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States. Hollywood, and many other areas within the U.S.A., are being devastated. This is a concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a National Security threat. It is, in addition to everything else, messaging and propaganda! Therefore, I am authorizing the Department of Commerce, and the United States Trade Representative, to immediately begin the process of instituting a 100% Tariff on any and all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in Foreign Lands. WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN!"

It's not clear how Trump's tariffs on foreign-produced films would work or which films would even be affected. Entertainment trade publication Variety reported, for instance, that it was unclear if Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoningdue out later this month — would be subject to tariffs because it was primarily filmed in the United Kingdom.

It's unclear what will happen with Trump's proposed movie tariffs, but entertainment companies will certainly be watching closely.
