The internet has proven time and again that it loves little word puzzle games. Just look at all the wildly popular games from The New York Times.
Now, it appears that Apple is trying to break into that world. iOS 26, which was announced this week at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), includes a new "Emoji Game" for Apple News+ subscribers.
The idea is that you fill in blanks with emoji to complete three phrases. The words or emoji can have double meanings across phrases, so the goal is to solve the puzzle in as few moves as possible.
Here's a preview of what the game will look like.
Credit: AppleYou drag the emoji into the blank spaces in order to solve the puzzle. Folks who are using the iOS 26 beta and are Apple News+ subscribers can start playing the game today. It seems like it'll follow a similar playbook to the NYT's game offerings — a daily, shareable puzzle that tracks your stats.
Wrote Apple in a press release:
"Users can share puzzles, track stats and streaks, and compete with others through Game Center leaderboards. Emoji Game features a daily puzzle available in the U.S. and for English-speaking users in Canada, and can be accessed from the Following tab in the News app."
If people love the Emoji Game, it could prove useful for getting people to subscribe to Apple News+. However, at $12.99 per month, it'd have to be a very good game.
OpenAI has a new reasoning model called o3-pro that the company says is its most intelligent yet.
On Tuesday the ChatGPT maker announced o3-pro on X, sharing some details on its improvement over o3. OpenAI highlighted better performance in "science, education, programming, data analysis, and writing" and also said reviewers rated it higher on "clarity, comprehensiveness, instruction-following, and accuracy."
This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.o3-pro is available in the API and to ChatGPT Pro and Team users, with Enterprise and Edu availability rolling out next week.
OpenAI's o3-pro is the newest addition to its family of reasoning models, which break down tasks into steps for ostensibly more accurate and reliable responses, as opposed to conventional LLMs. In this regard, reasoning models like o3-pro are considered better for complex tasks and OpenAI says o3-pro "excels at math, science, and coding." OpenAI posted benchmark evaluations indicating o3-pro surpasses o1-pro and o3 in these areas.
Researchers from Apple recently found some notable limitations in reasoning models, including OpenAI's o3-mini. When prompted to solve the classic Tower of Hanoi problem, which involves moving discs from one peg to another, the models struggled as complexity increased and even gave up despite having more computing power at their disposal.
The research made waves amongst the AI community as evidence that reasoning models aren't as smart as they're hyped to be. However, experts also pointed out that the research tested a very specific problem, and it didn't compare the results of humans and reasoning models on the same problems. So, it's not a definitive conclusion that AI tools are completely overhyped, but the findings do suggest that they're not necessarily the best models for every kind of task.
o3-pro has access to tools in ChatGPT, including web search, Python, visual analysis of documents, and personalized responses with memory support. But it doesn't support image generation or canvas, OpenAI's interface for working on projects, according to the release notes. Responses will also take longer because o3-pro has access to tools.
Disclosure: Ziff Davis, Mashable’s parent company, in April filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging it infringed Ziff Davis copyrights in training and operating its AI systems.
SAVE $20: As of June 11, the Ninja Crispi air fryer is on sale for just $159.99 at Amazon, Best Buy, Kohl's, and on Ninja's website. That's 11% off its $179.99 MSRP and its lowest price on record.
Opens in a new window Credit: Ninja Ninja Crispi Portable Glass Air Fryer $159.95 at Amazon, Best Buy, Kohl's, and NinjaTikTok hype isn't always a great indicator of a good product, but the viral Ninja Crispi managed to win over Mashable's Samantha Mangino. Fresh off testing a huge batch of Ninja kitchen appliances, she named it her favorite air fryer in the lineup.
"With its portable design, [the Crispi] stores nicely and can be used on the go. Plus, it actually works," Mangino writes. It passed both of her trials with ease, turning tofu cubes into "crunchy perfection" and crisping frozen French fries quickly while keeping them fluffy-soft inside.
The Crispi is a good buy at its usual price of $179.95, but right now it's on sale for less. Amazon, Best Buy, Kohl's, and Ninja's website all have it marked down to $159.95, or $20 off, which is its biggest discount to date. Take your pick from three colors: Stone, Sage Green, or Cyberspace (which Amazon calls Navy and Best Buy calls Gray — go figure). Note that Kohl's throws in $30 worth of Kohl's Cash that you can put toward a future purchase from June 16 to 22.
Mangino tested the Mint-colored Crispi, which wasn't on sale at the time of writing. Credit: Samantha Mangino / MashableMangino admits that she was initially "skeptical" of the Crispi because of its design, which involves a glass basket and an air-frying lid with some controls on it. But beyond heating food well, it also doubles as storage for leftovers — super convenient. "The Ninja Crispi ... allows you to meal prep and store food directly into glass baskets, where you will then reheat it," Mangino writes. "The storage containers are all dishwasher safe, a rare trait in air fryer baskets."
Mangino's main gripe with the Crispi is that it has a limited number of settings compared to other air fryers (i.e., you can't change its temperature). That said, she thinks it's suited for "a variety of foods" as-is. Read her full writeup for more takeaways.

Today, Hinge launches new prompts co-created with Esther Perel, psychotherapist and host of the hit podcast Where Should We Begin?
Perel is known for her expertise on sex and relationships. Where Should We Begin? brings listeners into anonymous couples therapy sessions. Perel's bestselling book Mating in Captivity discusses sex in long-term relationships.
SEE ALSO: Best dating apps for singles who want something seriousThe 10 new conversation starters, themed "Your World," aim to encourage users to share beyond the typical details on a dating app profile.
In my friend group, I'm the one who...
Something my pet thinks about me...
The kindest thing someone has ever done for me...
An award my family would give me...
You'd never know, but I...
I'm in my element when...
Before we meet, you should listen to...
I could stay up all night talking about...
It's not a vacation unless...
Where I go when I want to feel a little more like myself...
"As a couples therapist, I've spent decades observing relationships at all stages. I've seen that love often starts with an invitation: to talk, to connect, to share stories, to explore the world together. And the right invitations elicit curiosity, inspire playfulness, and break daters out of old scripts," said Perel in the press release.
Hinge is known for its prompts, and earlier this year, the app added AI-powered prompt feedback to encourage more thorough responses. (Mashable has compared AI features on Hinge, Tinder, and Bumble.) Hinge also recently introduced Match Note, a way to share private details with matches that daters may not want to share on a public profile.
Prompts are apparently so successful that other dating apps have started adding similar features. In recent years, both Bumble and Tinder added them as options to user profiles (the latter and Hinge are both owned by the same parent company, Match Group).
Elon Musk is walking it back.
The world's richest man, who just last week cheerfully announced to his 220 million X followers that Donald Trump was "in the Epstein files," has now apparently decided that a feud with the president of the U.S. might not be such a good idea.
"I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week," Musk posted on Wednesday. "They went too far."
This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.Musk and Trump's feud began shortly after the former left the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). He'd only been out of the White House for a few days before he started publicly bashing the president's "big beautiful bill", with things quickly escalating on Thursday to the point that Musk was retweeting a call for Trump to be impeached (now un-retweeted) and Trump was threatening Musk's government contracts.
Musk has subsequently deleted the Epstein post, while Trump has said he has no plans to speak to Musk.
But hey — maybe this latest development will repair that once beautiful friendship?

An annual Peacock subscription is the gift that keeps on giving. Not only will it allow you to stream the U.S. Open this week, but it also unlocks year-round access to even more live golf — including the Women's PGA Championship, U.S. Senior Open, American Century Championship, and The Open Championship. Not to mention, if you subscribe to an annual subscription instead of monthly, you'll save about 17%. Typically $7.99 per month for a Premium account with ads, an annual subscription will drop the monthly rate to just $6.67 per month. In other words, you'll get 12 months of streaming for the price of 10.
The same goes for the Premium Plus plan without ads; while a monthly subscription would run you $13.99 per month, the price drops down to just $11.67 monthly if you pay for a year up front.

Best live TV streaming dealsWhile Peacock is the most straightforward option for watching the U.S. Open for cord-cutters, it's not the only option. If you'd rather have a more long-term option for watching live sports in general, a cable alternative like Sling or YouTube TV is your best bet. Some even offer free trials, so you can watch all four rounds of the U.S. Open on NBC and USA for free, then cancel before you're charged the full monthly fee (which can be pretty steep).
Here are the best deals for watching the third gold major and more via live TV streaming. Double-check that NBC and USA are both offered in your zip code before you commit to a service.
Most affordable: Sling TV Opens in a new window Credit: Sling Sling TV Blue package $23 for your first month (save $23) Get DealSling TV is by far the most affordable live TV streaming service out there, thanks to its a la carte model. The Blue package, which includes access to your local NBC network as well as USA Network, typically costs $46 per month. However, new users can slash 50% off their first month and pay just $23. You can add or take away from your plan with no worries and cancel or pause at any time.
Best introductory offer: YouTube TV Opens in a new window Credit: YouTube YouTube TV free 10-day trial, then $59.99/month for your first two months (save $46) Get DealYouTube TV offers a massive 100+ channel lineup, which includes your local NBC network and USA Network, as well as other local favorites for sports, news, and entertainment. We're not big fans of its $82.99 per month fee, but through July 31, the streamer is giving new users a sweet introductory offer. You'll get your first 10 days for free, then your first two months for just $59.99 per month. That's $46 in savings, should you choose to stick around.
Best free trial: Fubo TV Opens in a new window Credit: fuboTV 7-day free trial, then $54.99 for first month (save $30) Get DealBesides your local NBC network, Fubo offers the most comprehensive sports coverage of any live TV streamer. The Nintendo Switch 2 launch day has come and gone, and those lucky enough to get a console are already happily playing Mario Kart World and other launch titles.
Starting on June 5, gamers could finally purchase the Switch 2 console for $449.99 and the Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World Bundle for $499.99 — if you could find it in stock. Costco had inventory available on June 5, and Target started selling its inventory online on June 6, but as of this writing, it's unavailable at all retailers. GameStop and Staples at least have tools that let you check available stock at nearby stores.

To avoid hoarding and reselling, Nintendo and retailers are limiting orders per person. That means you'll need to make an account to successfully place an order. We also recommend reviewing our tips for tracking restocks, and in the meantime, try all the links below.
Place an order with NintendoYou can't simply go to the My Nintendo Store and buy the Switch 2. To order the Switch 2, you need to log in with an active, paid Nintendo Switch Online account. Once you do that, you can choose either a Switch 2 standalone console or the Mario Kart World bundle and then hit the confirm button to "register your interest" in ordering a Switch 2.
Now for the weird stuff. Only Switch Online members who have paid for at least 12 months of service and registered at least 50 hours of gameplay on their Switch consoles can purchase through Nintendo. In other words, you better be a true Switch gamer if you want to buy the Switch 2 this way. If you're eligible and follow these steps, watch your email for an invitation link.

Technically, Walmart shoppers have been able to preorder Switch 2 consoles on Walmart's website since midnight ET on April 24. In reality, the console has been sold out consistently. Our advice? Go to the Walmart Switch 2 listing a few times a day and smash that refresh button.
We'll update this article as soon as we find Switch 2 consoles in stock at Walmart (or anywhere). Walmart also sells a lot of Switch 2 launch titles and accessories.

Target workers reportedly gave out reservation tickets to a lucky few. Buyers were whisked off to the electronics department, where they could finally purchase either the Switch 2 or a Switch 2 bundle.

If you were lucky enough to get a GameStop preorder, you could pick up your console at midnight on June 5. GameStop stores also hosted midnight launch events (though supplies were limited), and gamers can go to GameStop locations to participate in a "Transfer and Trade," where they trade in their original Switch and transfer data to the new console.
You can also try your luck online or sign up to get updates when new inventory becomes available. You can also buy Switch 2 games and accessories at GameStop, including those all-important MicroSD Express cards.

If you weren't one of the chosen ones who got a console at these events, you'll have to rely on the Best Buy website. So far, we haven't seen any inventory available, unfortunately.
As a “high-demand item,” Best Buy customers have to follow specific steps to buy a Switch 2 online:
Create a My Best Buy account and sign in
Confirm your location
Add the item to your cart
Follow the on-screen prompts and check for available inventory
If you get a Switch 2 console in your cart, you’ll have 10 minutes to complete the purchase
You'll notice there's one major retailer conspicuously missing so far — Amazon. That's because Amazon is not an official Nintendo retailer, so any Switch 2 consoles you find there are likely listed by resellers of dubious legitimacy. However, Amazon shoppers can preorder some Switch 2 titles ahead of the launch.
Opens in a new window Credit: Nintendo Daemon X Machina Titanic Scion Limited Edition $99.99 at AmazonAs we noted in our Switch 2 preorder guide, select Staples stores will sell the Switch 2 on a first-come, first-served basis starting June 5. Most Staples locations open at 8 a.m., but we recommend showing up bright and early. Staples will also be selling an unnamed Switch 2 game bundle, and we know it's not the standard Mario Kart World bundle. As with other retailers, Switch 2 consoles are currently listed as "Out of stock" at the Staples online store.

Then you may be able to secure your Switch 2 at the mega-retailer, which has been one of the few retailers with actual inventory available on June 5. Costco members can purchase the Nintendo Switch 2 Mario Kart World bundle online starting June 5, though there's a limit of one console per membership (every seven days). As of this writing, the console and Mario Kart bundle are both sold out.

Since opening for preorder on April 24, the Switch 2 has been sold out pretty much everywhere, like the PS5 before it. In fact, so many gamers tried to place preorders on April 24 that they immediately crashed the GameStop, Target, and Walmart websites. That's left many Switch fans wondering how to buy the Switch 2 online. So, if you aren't buying a Switch 2 in person, keep checking this page for the latest stock updates on Switch 2 launch day and beyond.

To sum up his thoughts, while there are a couple of annoying setup quirks, the new console is a big step forward and just as much fun as you'd hoped. You can also read all about the Switch 2 launch titles we're most excited to play.
"I think it’s awesome," Perry wrote in his Switch 2 early review. "Most of the games I’ve played have been impressive in one way or another, and the hardware is a clear improvement over the first Switch. It’s not perfect, but nothing is."
