We're like shopping watchdogs, relentlessly scanning top product listings and tracking prices to find you the best deals. Last month was doozy in the deals department, thanks to Memorial Day weekend and the usual spring-to-summer transitional sales, and Mashable readers really took advantage of those discounts.

An absurd TikTok trend lets AI finish your photo

Mashable - Thu, 06/12/2025 - 11:38

A new trend on TikTok uses a CapCut template and AI to animate your photo — and it's so absurd.

The trend morphs a regular photo into something out of your most illogical dream, turning a moment from your real life into something that quickly falls off the deep end. In one photo, a man is sitting with his dog in his lap. AI turns that dog into a human wearing a dog suit (for some reason?) and a cop arrests him as the man screams on with three (?) arms.

"To early to be laughin wakin the whole house up🤣🤣🤣🤣," one user commented under the video.

"Well that’s my nightmare sorted tonight," another user said.

In another photo, a woman lays fully clothed in an empty bath tub. When the photo comes to life using AI, water immediately fills the tub, she stands up and miraculously walks through a porcelain-enameled tub, and flings herself back into the tub when she notices a robber is coming through the bathroom door.

The edits are often nonsensical. Still, a few patterns have emerged. These videos usually end up having someone kick the air and someone else with a few too many hands. There's often a cop or a robber somehow involved.

To try the trend for yourself, you have to download CapCut, TikTok's editing app, and use the trend's template. As with most CapCut trends, there are multiple templates, each of which are linked on the specific TikTok videos themselves. One specifically asks the question "who will be taken by the police?" while others simply promise that "AI will guess what will happen next." With most versions of the template, CapCut will have you pick a photo — I chose a photo of my cat at the dinner table — and then will automatically apply the AI effects. In the AI version of the video, my cat put on a purple blazer and white dress shirt, had him do a kick in the air, turned him into an old Asian person, and then rained vegetables down across the screen.

SEE ALSO: Report: Creating a 5-second AI video is like running a microwave for an hour

People trying the trend say it shows how ridiculous AI is; always adding a hand, walking through solid objects, or depicting the true chaos of dreams. In one video, where a dog is turned into a truly horrifying human, a commenter shared, "You know what, it’s my own fault for having the internet."

Beyond the relative silliness of the trend, very few users are questioning the ethics of participating in it at all.

Using AI has lasting effects on the environment. A group of more than 130 civil society organizations including Amnesty International and Defend Democracy published an open letter asking the AI industry and its regulators to mitigate the environmental impacts of this tech, TechCrunch reported in February. While we don't know exactly how much energy it takes to try out this specific TikTok trend, an investigation from MIT Technology Review found that a newer AI model uses "about 3.4 million joules, more than 700 times the energy required to generate a high-quality image" to create a five-second video.

Camping used to be confined to designated campgrounds, but times have changed. We now have water purification systems and coolers that can chill for weeks, so there's no real reason to stay on-grid this summer. That's especially true if you're packing along a portable power station. If you're in the market for one, check out today's deal at Amazon.

As of June 12, the DJI Power 1000 portable power station is on sale for $549, down from $999, at Amazon, thanks to the on-page coupon. That's $450 off, or 45% in savings.

If you'll be camping off-grid this summer, packing along a portable power station is a must. It's just as important as the cooler, if not more. The DJI Power 1000 portable power station will allow you to recharge all your essential devices like your phones, lanterns, rechargeable mosquito repellers, and plenty more.

Two USB-C 140W ports means you'll be repowering phones and laptops in no time, and the DJI focuses on quiet operation. If you'll be using it while you're asleep, rest well thanks to the 23 decibel noise level, which is as low as many air purifiers and fans.

SEE ALSO: The Anker Solix C1000 portable power station is nearly half off at Amazon

When it comes time to recharge the DJI Power 1000 itself, expect to go from zero to full charge in just 70 minutes. If you only have 50 minutes, you'll be able to get back up to 80% charge.

Once summer camping season is over, the DJI Power 1000 is perfect for bringing out into the yard for projects before winter sets in. It's also essential for power outages since it can keep your home's refrigerator cooling and gives you the ability to stay up to date on the power restoration timeline with your fully-charged phone.

Instead of assuming you have to camp with dead batteries, snag the DJI Power 1000 while it's on sale for $549 at Amazon. That $450 discount can then be reinvested into camping toys like stand-up paddleboards, warmer sleeping bags, or fun lights.

The Diplomat Season 3 teaser: All hail President Allison Janney and First Gentleman Bradley Whitford

Mashable - Thu, 06/12/2025 - 11:13

The Diplomat Season 2 ended with bombshell after bombshell.

Turns out that Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) was behind the attack on the British warship HMS Courageous. Upon learning this catastrophic news, President William Ryaburn (Michael McKean) straight-up died, leaving Grace to become President of the United States.

SEE ALSO: The 10 best TV shows of 2025 (so far), and where to stream them

So where does that leave Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) and her husband Hal (Rufus Sewell)?

By the looks of The Diplomat Season 3's first teaser, still very much in the thick of the show's international intrigue. According to Netflix's official Season 3 synopsis:

In season three of The Diplomat, Ambassador Kate Wyler lives the particular nightmare that is getting what you want. She just accused Vice President Grace Penn of hatching a terrorist plot and admitted she’s after the VP’s job. But now the president is dead, Kate’s husband Hal may have inadvertently killed him, and Grace Penn is leader of the free world. None of this slows Hal’s campaign to land Kate the vice presidency. Kate steps into a role she never wanted, with a freedom she never expected, an increasingly complicated friendship with Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi) and an unnerving bond with first gentleman Todd Penn.

Todd Penn is played by none other than Bradley Whitford, marking a major West Wing reunion between him, Janney, and The Diplomat creator Debora Cahn, who worked on The West Wing's later seasons.

To catch Janney and Whitford in action again, and to see what's next for Kate, check out the full teaser above.

The Diplomat also stars Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, and Ato Essandoh.

The Diplomat Season 3 premieres this Fall on Netflix.

Google to force Pixel 6a update that will reduce battery capacity

Mashable - Thu, 06/12/2025 - 10:02

Typically, when a smartphone maker announces a software upgrade, you expect improvements. But a new update to Google's Pixel 6a devices will actually reduce the phone's battery capacity. The kicker: The software update will be mandatory, meaning some Pixel 6a owners will have to install it.

Google, of course, isn't doing this for fun. The problem, according to the company, is the risk of the Pixel 6a battery overheating.

The silver lining is that not all Pixel 6a owners are affected; those that are will be contacted by Google in July.

SEE ALSO: Everything we know about Google Pixel 10: Rumored August launch date leaked

"A subset of Pixel 6a phones will require a mandatory software update to reduce the risk of potential battery overheating. The update will enable battery management features that will reduce capacity and charging performance after the battery reaches 400 charge cycles. We’ll contact impacted customers next month, with all the information they need to address the issue," said the company (via 9to5Google).

Reduced charging speed and battery capacity isn't ideal, but it's certainly better than the phone catching fire, which has happened to several Pixel 6a owners in the past couple of weeks.

In Your Dreams trailer: Netflix animation guides us through a world of dreams and nightmares

Mashable - Thu, 06/12/2025 - 09:00

Over the past few years, Netflix has cemented itself as a strong contender in the animated feature space, releasing Academy Award–nominated movies like The Sea Beast, Nimona, and Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl. Could the upcoming film In Your Dreams join their ranks?

SEE ALSO: Summer Movie Preview: What's coming to theaters and streaming?

In Your Dreams is the first feature from Kuku Studios, which was founded by the film's director and co-writer, Alex Woo. Woo is both the creator of the Emmy–winning series Go! Go! Cory Carson and a Pixar alum, having worked on movies like Ratatouille and WALL-E. In Your Dreams marks his feature directorial debut.

The film transports us to a magical place where anything is possible: the dreams of siblings Stevie (voiced by Jolie Hoang-Rappaport) and Elliot (voiced by Elias Janssen). The pair discover a mysterious book titled The Legend of the Sandman, which turns their dreams into a reality. In their own personal dreamlands, they'll encounter enchanting new landscapes, talking food, and Elliot's snarky stuffed giraffe, Baloney Tony (voiced by Craig Robinson).

In Your Dreams isn't just an adventurous romp through dreams, though. It's also a tale of two kids trying to reunite their family. Stevie and Elliot hope to find the Sandman (voiced by Omid Djalili) so that he can grant their deepest wish: to save their parents' (voiced by Cristin Milioti and Simu Liu) marriage. But to get to the legendary ruler of dreams, they'll have to brave monstrous hot dogs, terrifying storms at sea, and the queen of nightmares.

Get a sneak peek at In Your Dreams' fanciful dreams — and nightmares — in the trailer above.

In Your Dreams also features the voices of Gia Carides, SungWon Cho, and Zachary Noah Piser.

In Your Dreams hits Netflix Nov. 14.

Bose introduces new QuietComfort earbuds, SoundLink speakers, and a summery yellow colorway

Mashable - Thu, 06/12/2025 - 09:00

Bose is kicking off the summer with new product launches in the QuietComfort and SoundLink lines. On June 12, the brand announced the QuietComfort Ultra earbuds (2nd Gen), SoundLink Plus portable speaker, and SoundLink Micro Bluetooth speaker (2nd Gen). The SoundLink Plus speaker is available for preorder now, and the QC Ultras and Micro are scheduled to arrive later in the summer.

Bose SoundLink Plus portable speaker The Bose Soundlink Plus comes in black, citrus yellow, and blue dusk. Credit: Bose / Mashable composite

Sitting between the SoundLink Flex and SoundLink Max, the Plus is a new mid-range speaker from Bose. It features one subwoofer, one tweeter, and four passive radiators. The speaker has the signature SoundLink look with the powder-coated steel grille and soft-touch silicone that comes in three colors: black, blue dusk, and a new citrus yellow (which I'm personally excited about).

You can pair the Plus with another Plus through Stereo Mode, where one acts as the left channel and the other as the right, or use the on-unit shortcut button to sync in Party Mode with other current SoundLink speakers, including the Max, Micro (2nd Gen), and Flex (2nd Gen).

The SoundLink Plus retails for $269, and preorders begin June 12 (June 18 for the citrus yellow color). General availability begins June 26.

Here's a look at the SoundLink Plus's specs:

  • Up to 20 hours of playback time

  • Full battery charge within five hours

  • USB-C charge-out

  • IP67-rated waterproof and dustproof

  • Shock- and rust-resistant

  • Adjustable three-band equalizer

  • Bluetooth Core 5.4 with multipoint connectivity up to 30 feet

  • Size: 9.1 inches W x 3.94 inches H x 3.4 inches D

  • Weight: 3.29 pounds

Pre-order Here Bose QuietComfort Ultra earbuds (2nd Gen) Bose's flagship earbuds are getting an upgrade. Credit: Bose

The original Bose QuietComfort Ultras are our favorite noise-cancelling earbuds and earned a Mashable Choice award, so we're excited to see them get an upgrade. The new flagship model brings enhanced adaptive noise cancellation, improved call quality, and wireless case charging.

Like almost all new tech this year, the QC Ultras have an AI component. On top of Bose's proprietary CustomTune sound calibration technology that personalizes audio and noise cancellation based on the shape of the wearer's ear and the environment around them, Bose is using an updated AI algorithm to help improve Aware Mode. The noise cancellation should be smoother when adjusting to sudden spikes of noise, meaning audio won't be drowned out by a passing train or siren. There's also a new AI-powered noise suppression system designed to improve call quality on the QC Ultras and reduce background noise like wind or passing conversations.

The Bose QuietComfort Ultra earbuds (2nd Gen) come in black, white smoke, and a limited-edition deep plum, and will retail for $299 with a release date later this summer.

A look at the Bose QuietComfort Ultra earbuds (2nd Gen)'s specs:

  • Up to six hours of playback, up to 18 additional hours with charging case

  • 20-minute quick charge provides up to two hours of playback

  • Immersive Audio mode

  • Eight microphones

  • Adjustable three-band equalizer

  • IPx4 water- and sweat-resistant

  • Small, medium, and large ear tips and stability bands

  • Bluetooth Core 5.4 with multipoint connectivity up to 30 feet

On the most portable end of the SoundLink spectrum lies the Micro — a mini speaker that brings Bose's signature sound to a pocket-sized casing. The updated second-generation Micro introduces improved audio performance, USB-C connectivity, a removable nylon strap for carrying or attachment, and Bose app compatibility. It houses one driver and dual passive radiators for improved performance at higher frequencies without sacrificing bass. Like the new SoundLink Plus, the SoundLink Micro features Stereo Mode and Party Mode, allowing it to sync with other SoundLink speakers.

The Micro comes in black or blue dusk and will retail for $129 with a release date later this summer. This is a $10 price increase compared to the first-gen Micro, which retails for $119.

Here's a look at the Bose SoundLink Micro Bluetooth speaker (2nd Gen)'s specs:

  • Up to 12 hours of playback time

  • Full charge in four hours

  • IP67-rated waterproof and dustproof

  • Shock- and rust-resistant

  • Adjustable three-band equalizer

  • Bluetooth Core 5.4 with multipoint connectivity up to 30 feet

  • Size: 4.06 inches W x 4.06 inches H x 1.54 inches D

  • Weight: 0.7 pounds

We're planning to get our hands on the new earbuds and speakers, so stay tuned for our thoughts.

Seth Meyers interviewing Conan OBrien is a chaotic trip down Late Night memory lane

Mashable - Thu, 06/12/2025 - 07:32

Conan O'Brien is back in 30 Rock again, this time appearing on Late Night — the very show he hosted himself for 16 years.

But unlike his comically explosive appearance on The Tonight Show in 2024, his interview with Seth Meyers feels like more of a light-hearted – and occasionally chaotic – trip down memory lane, with O'Brien recounting his own experiences on the show (which he at one pointed wanted to rename Nighty Night) and all of the more bizarre sketches that came with it.

More of O'Brien appearing on talk shows, please.

Nintendo Switch 2 restock tracker: Check Target, Best Buy, Walmart, and more

Mashable - Thu, 06/12/2025 - 05:47

The Nintendo Switch 2 launch day has come and gone, and those lucky enough to get a console are already happily playing Mario Kart World and other launch titles.

Starting on June 5, gamers could finally purchase the Switch 2 console for $449.99 and the Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World Bundle for $499.99 — if you could find it in stock. Costco had inventory available on June 5, and Target started selling its inventory online on June 6, but as of this writing, it's unavailable at all retailers. GameStop and Staples at least have tools that let you check available stock at nearby stores.

So, where can you buy the Switch 2 online? Check for Switch 2 stock at the My Nintendo Store and official Nintendo retailers and smash that refresh button like it's your first time playing Super Smash Bros.

Every way to buy the Switch 2 online Credit: Nintendo

To avoid hoarding and reselling, Nintendo and retailers are limiting orders per person. That means you'll need to make an account to successfully place an order. We also recommend reviewing our tips for tracking restocks, and in the meantime, try all the links below.

Place an order with Nintendo

You can't simply go to the My Nintendo Store and buy the Switch 2. To order the Switch 2, you need to log in with an active, paid Nintendo Switch Online account. Once you do that, you can choose either a Switch 2 standalone console or the Mario Kart World bundle and then hit the confirm button to "register your interest" in ordering a Switch 2.

Now for the weird stuff. Only Switch Online members who have paid for at least 12 months of service and registered at least 50 hours of gameplay on their Switch consoles can purchase through Nintendo. In other words, you better be a true Switch gamer if you want to buy the Switch 2 this way. If you're eligible and follow these steps, watch your email for an invitation link.

Unlike Nintendo, purchasing the Switch 2 online at Walmart is pretty simple. Technically, Walmart shoppers have been able to preorder Switch 2 consoles on Walmart's website since midnight ET on April 24. In reality, the console has been sold out consistently. Our advice? Go to the Walmart Switch 2 listing a few times a day and smash that refresh button.

We'll update this article as soon as we find Switch 2 consoles in stock at Walmart (or anywhere). Walmart also sells a lot of Switch 2 launch titles and accessories.

Target stores opened as usual on launch day, and according to a press release, Switch 2 hopefuls were directed to a "designated queuing location" near the entrance. Target workers reportedly gave out reservation tickets to a lucky few. Buyers were whisked off to the electronics department, where they could finally purchase either the Switch 2 or a Switch 2 bundle.

GameStop is the one retailer of the four listed here that's doing things a little bit differently. If you were lucky enough to get a GameStop preorder, you could pick up your console at midnight on June 5. GameStop stores also hosted midnight launch events (though supplies were limited), and gamers can go to GameStop locations to participate in a "Transfer and Trade," where they trade in their original Switch and transfer data to the new console.

You can also try your luck online or sign up to get updates when new inventory becomes available. You can also buy Switch 2 games and accessories at GameStop, including those all-important MicroSD Express cards.

Best Buy joined GameStop in hosting Switch 2 midnight launch parties, but the tents and lawn chairs have been packed away by now. If you weren't one of the chosen ones who got a console at these events, you'll have to rely on the Best Buy website. So far, we haven't seen any inventory available, unfortunately.

As a “high-demand item,” Best Buy customers have to follow specific steps to buy a Switch 2 online:

  • Create a My Best Buy account and sign in

  • Confirm your location

  • Add the item to your cart

  • Follow the on-screen prompts and check for available inventory

  • If you get a Switch 2 console in your cart, you’ll have 10 minutes to complete the purchase

You'll notice there's one major retailer conspicuously missing so far — Amazon. That's because Amazon is not an official Nintendo retailer, so any Switch 2 consoles you find there are likely listed by resellers of dubious legitimacy. However, Amazon shoppers can preorder some Switch 2 titles ahead of the launch.

As we noted in our Switch 2 preorder guide, select Staples stores will sell the Switch 2 on a first-come, first-served basis starting June 5. Most Staples locations open at 8 a.m., but we recommend showing up bright and early. Staples will also be selling an unnamed Switch 2 game bundle, and we know it's not the standard Mario Kart World bundle. As with other retailers, Switch 2 consoles are currently listed as "Out of stock" at the Staples online store.

Learn More How to buy the Switch 2 at Costco

Are you a Costco member? Then you may be able to secure your Switch 2 at the mega-retailer, which has been one of the few retailers with actual inventory available on June 5. Costco members can purchase the Nintendo Switch 2 Mario Kart World bundle online starting June 5, though there's a limit of one console per membership (every seven days). As of this writing, the console and Mario Kart bundle are both sold out.

Learn More Why is the Switch 2 so hard to find in stock?

Simply put, it's a matter of demand far outpacing supply, though tariffs definitely didn't help.

Since opening for preorder on April 24, the Switch 2 has been sold out pretty much everywhere, like the PS5 before it. In fact, so many gamers tried to place preorders on April 24 that they immediately crashed the GameStop, Target, and Walmart websites. That's left many Switch fans wondering how to buy the Switch 2 online. So, if you aren't buying a Switch 2 in person, keep checking this page for the latest stock updates on Switch 2 launch day and beyond.

Aimee Lou Wood still voice notes this White Lotus cast member each day

Mashable - Thu, 06/12/2025 - 05:36

The White Lotus Season 3 may be over, but Aimee Lou Wood is still sending daily voice notes to at least one of her cast mates.

Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the actor spoke about the seven months she spent filming Season 3 with the cast, and the tight relationships that were formed.

"It was a very long time, and I feel that's why there's a real feeling of separation anxiety whenever we have to leave each other," she says in the clip. "It's intense, and there's definitely a lot of co-dependence I think. I can't go a day without speaking to Leslie [Bibb]. We just constantly voice note."

Elsewhere she also describes when she first learned her character's fate, and the lengths creator Mike White went to keep everything secret.

Elon Musk reveals Robotaxi launch date, but hes not very certain about it

Mashable - Thu, 06/12/2025 - 05:21

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has a "tentative" date for the Robotaxi service launch in Austin, Texas.

The date, according to a post on X, is "tentatively" June 22, though even Musk doesn't seem too certain about it.

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

"We are being super paranoid about safety, so the date could shift," he wrote, adding that the first Tesla self-delivery, in which the car "drives itself from factory end of line all the way to a customer house," should happen on June 28.

The company has been testing its Robotaxi service ahead of launch for roughly a month now. A previous report claimed the launch is scheduled for June 12. A recent short video, shared by Musk, shows a driverless Tesla Model Y on a public road in Austin, Texas.

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

The uncertainty about the launch date is hardly a surprise given recent reports that the city of Austin isn't ready for Tesla's Robotaxi service yet.

It's important to make a distinction between the Robotaxi service, which will initially start with Tesla Model Y cars, and the Cybercab, a car made specifically for autonomous ferrying of passengers, which is scheduled to go into production "before 2027".

SEE ALSO: Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robot program loses its head

As for the Robotaxi service that should start this June, it'll reportedly start as a very small affair, with just 10 to 20 vehicles, and in a very small testing area. When it finally kicks off, it'll join driverless taxis from Waymo and Zoox, both of which are already operating in Austin.

Whether you're shopping for yourself or trying to find a last-minute Father's Day gift, a Kindle is a worthy pick-up. Personally, I think the basic Kindle is absolutely worth the investment, especially if you're a big reader. What's even better is its essentials bundle, which comes with a power adapter and fabric cover.

The Kindle Essentials Bundle has dropped from its usual list price of $161.97 to $146.97, allowing you to save $15. That's a very nice deal compared to buying each item on its own, and sets you up to start a new e-reading journey right away.

This Kindle boasts a six-inch glare-free display and 16GB of storage, so you can stock up your library with some exciting new titles. It's the perfect compact size to fit in a bag or purse as well, which is great with the summer weather kicking in. I've taken mine outside to read plenty of times. It also has an excellent battery life of up to six weeks, which is good news if you're traveling in the coming months.

If you've been waiting for a good time to jump on the e-reading bandwagon, now is the time to do it with this deal on the Kindle Essentials Bundle.

It's not the only Kindle that has been discounted at Amazon, though. If you don't mind spending a bit more, the Kindle Scribe is down to its lowest-ever price at Amazon right now.

Apple AirTags can be attached to nearly anything: keys, phones, purses, anything you lose regularly. They couldn't be any easier to use. The battery life is solid, too. According to Apple, all AirTags are designed to have a one-year battery life if used regularly. They use a standard CR2032 coin cell battery, which is user-replaceable. When the battery is running low, you’ll receive a notification on your iPhone, giving you plenty of time to replace it.

It even has an IP67 water resistance rating, so it can cope with a maximum depth of one meter for up to 30 minutes. But we're really hoping your phone doesn't end up underwater...
