WhatsApp is finally getting a feature that's so basic one has to wonder why it wasn't there in the first place: usernames.
That's right, the Meta-owned app still doesn't let you log in with a username and password, instead requiring you to punch in your phone number. But this appears to be changing.
According to WABetaInfo, which tracks WhatsApp beta features, a new WhatsApp beta (version 25.17.10.70), the company is currently working on adding usernames, though the feature isn't yet available for testing.
SEE ALSO: WhatsApp's iPad app is here, and it's exactly what you'd expectThe way it'll work is as follows: WhatsApp users will get the option to create a unique username consisting of letters and numbers, provided it doesn't use special characters (besides periods and underscores). For security reasons, usernames won't be allowed to start with "www." or end with a domain such as ".com" to prevent folks to trick people into pretending they represent a website. And, of course, usernames that are already taken will not be available.
For other users, username changes will be visible. For example, when someone you're chatting with updates their username, you'll see a system message in the chat notifying you of the change.
Perhaps most importantly, this will enable you to hide your phone number from other users you're interacting with on the platform, as you'll have the option to choose your username show instead.
All of this is currently under development and could change before the feature is actually released, though we can probably expect that to happen soon.

If you like playing daily word games like Wordle, then Hurdle is a great game to add to your routine.
There are five rounds to the game. The first round sees you trying to guess the word, with correct, misplaced, and incorrect letters shown in each guess. If you guess the correct answer, it'll take you to the next hurdle, providing the answer to the last hurdle as your first guess. This can give you several clues or none, depending on the words. For the final hurdle, every correct answer from previous hurdles is shown, with correct and misplaced letters clearly shown.
An important note is that the number of times a letter is highlighted from previous guesses does necessarily indicate the number of times that letter appears in the final hurdle.
If you find yourself stuck at any step of today's Hurdle, don't worry! We have you covered.

Strands requires the player to perform a twist on the classic word search. Words can be made from linked letters — up, down, left, right, or diagonal, but words can also change direction, resulting in quirky shapes and patterns. Every single letter in the grid will be part of an answer. Last Friday, the New York Times published an explosive report on the Trump administration's work with Palantir, which could result in the creation of a master database with information on every single American. Per the Times, if this type of "master list" was created, it would give the president "untold surveillance power."
President Donald Trump signed an executive order earlier this year enabling the federal government to share data on Americans across U.S. agencies. However, we now know more about how the administration intends to do it.
Trump has tapped the tech firm Palantir, co-founded by Trump and Republican megadonor Peter Thiel, to carry out these efforts. The New York Times reported that Palantir's technology would make it possible to compile sensitive information from agencies like the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the Internal Revenue Service. Various government databases already include information on Americans' bank account numbers, medical claims, disabilities, student debt amounts, and more, though not in one central place.
The Trump administration has said that it's looking to “eliminate information silos and streamline data collection across all agencies to increase government efficiency and save hard-earned taxpayer dollars.” However, the specter of a central database is a nightmare for privacy watchdogs, and has even raised privacy and security concerns from former Palantir employees.
What is Palantir?Over the past few years, Palantir has become a leading data and analytics company. While Palantir does provide its services to corporate clients, the company's most prominent and controversial work has been for the federal government, specifically for the U.S. military and intelligence agencies, as well as governments around the world.
Palantir was founded in the early 2000s by right-wing billionaire Peter Thiel, along with venture capitalists and entrepreneurs Joe Lonsdale, Stephen Cohen, and Alex Karp, who currently serves as the company's CEO. Thiel chose the name Palantir after the crystal balls used in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
If any of those names sounds familiar to you, it's likely Thiel's. One of the co-founders of PayPal, Thiel is a secretive Silicon Valley titan and conservative "kingmaker". In fact, it was Thiel that eventually ousted Elon Musk, a fellow co-founder who was serving as PayPal CEO at the time, from the company. After, Musk's ousting, Thiel himself took over as PayPal CEO in 2000. In 2004, Thiel became the first outside investor in Facebook, turning his $500,000 investment into more than $1 billion.
Why is Palantir so controversial?Palantir presents itself as a data and analytics company, but it also has a reputation for being highly secretive about its data mining and surveillance work. Palantir has also been criticized for providing intelligence services to aid the Israeli military in the 2023 Israel-Hamas war. CEO Karp has previously confirmed that Palantir provides intelligence services to the IDF. In response, Palantir has defended its work with Israel and has denied accusations of aiding war crimes, as its fiercest critics allege. Palantir has also been tapped to help U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) track immigrants in the U.S. as part of the Trump Administration's highly controversial policing and deportation efforts.
The company has been heavily criticized by data privacy advocates, anti-war protesters, and other organizations over the years.
Why would the Trump Administration tap Palantir to collect data on Americans?Palantir has already been contracted by the federal government for years now. For example, Palantir previously worked with Health and Human Services to help track the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, since Trump's inauguration earlier this year, Palantir's revenue and stock have skyrocketed. Palantir has received more than $113 million from the federal government in 2025 so far. In addition to that, the Department of Defense just awarded Palantir with a $795 million contract last week. According to Palantir's final quarterly report for 2024, the company made $1.2 billion in revenue from the U.S. government that year.
In addition, Palantir co-founder Thiel is also a major Republican donor. He's contributed tens of millions of dollars to Republican congressional campaigns over the years, as well as $1.25 million to Trump's 2016 campaign.
According to the New York Times, Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) were broadly responsible for the selection of Palantir for the data collection project. A number of DOGE employees have previously worked for Palantir or other companies funded by Thiel.
Apple CEO Tim Cook recently made headlines for personally calling Texas Governor Greg Abbott to urge a veto of a bill that would require age verification at the App Store level, part of Apple’s second-most profitable revenue stream. Cook's move is emblematic of a broader pattern: Big Tech leaders eager to profit from the distribution of addictive, predatory apps.
The signing into law of the App Store Accountability Act in Texas — Cook’s appeal didn’t work — comes just under six months after research my colleagues at the Heat Initiative and I worked on was featured in the Wall Street Journal. After our report on the App Store came out, we made sure to track which of the apps’ age ratings changed. One that stood out was Draw Happy Police: Trivia Game, an app that featured reviews saying, “No 4-year-old should have to see or be exposed to a half naked woman or man,” but was rated 4+ as of December 3, 2024. After our report came out, the app was removed from the App Store entirely and reappeared in late January 2025 with a 17+ age rating. Draw Happy Police: Trivia Game also offers in-app purchases, making clear just how much developers and CEOs prioritize profit — they would recommend an inappropriate app to a 4-year-old and allow them to spend their parents' or guardians’ money on it.
I was recently browsing Apple’s App Store when I came across the app Famefy. Famefy keeps young people glued to their artificial realities by creating an AI-simulated experience of fame, including (phony) fans and livestreams. The app creators boast, “Whether you’re simulating hype or living the life of a virtual celebrity, Famefy offers a realistic fan experience that makes you feel like a true star.”
SEE ALSO: Texas forces Google and Apple to verify ages in app stores. Teen social media ban could be next.Simulated fame and livestreaming engender a certain craving for attention when participating in usually private moments, like applying make-up or picking out an outfit, teaching young people that intimate moments should be shared with anonymous viewers. As a young teenager, I came to crave the rush I would get when going live to my followers, and now with apps like Famefy, more than just young kids with followings are potentially getting hooked. Whether we see it in popular culture, like Cat’s storyline in season 1 of Euphoria, or in the news for something horrific, livestreaming for anyone under 18 years old only exalts voyeurism and the erasure of boundaries among children, a key ingredient to the profit models of many Big Tech companies.
It is no accident that most teens use social media, and that the design features are created to exploit quick dopamine rushes. Creating the feeling of “addictedness” that most users feel when posting or scrolling their feeds only benefits Big Tech — 82 percent of Gen Z believes they are addicted to social media.
Famefy also offers in-app purchases for the option to build your “perfect viewer.” When I read about in-app purchases, I immediately went to the age rating because, again, giving agency to young users to purchase anything, let alone the attention of a fake audience, is a predatory money grab of vulnerable users. The developers and Apple know this, which is why I assume they gave Famefy a 4+ age rating.
The bill that Tim Cook was desperate to stop in Texas will legally require Apple to ensure accurate age ratings of individual apps. I would even advocate for one step further and ask for third-party, independent verification of the age ratings, like we have for video games, movies, and TV shows. With accountability like that, I would assume apps like Famefy will be forced to update their ratings.

How to watch the 2025 Tony AwardsThe 2025 Tony Awards will be broadcast live simultaneously on CBS and Paramount+ with Showtime. If you're a cable subscriber, you can simply switch the channel over to CBS at 8 p.m. ET on June 8, and you're good to go. Not near a TV? You can also use your cable login at CBS.com to watch live. If you don't have cable, you can only tune into the live broadcast through Paramount+ with Showtime (not the Essential plan) or a live TV cord-cutting service (more on that below). If you're on the Paramount+ Essential plan, the broadcast will be available to stream the following day.
Can I watch the Tony Awards for free?CBS is free over the air in the U.S., which means that, even without cable, you can watch the show live using an antenna. Don't have an antenna? No worries — you can tune into the Tony Awards via Paramount+ or a live TV cord-cutting service like YouTube TV or FuboTV. You could also ask a cable-subscribing friend or family member for their login information and use it to sign in with a TV provider on CBS.com, but sometimes that's more trouble than it's worth.
Surprisingly, there are a couple of different ways cord-cutters can watch the Tony Awards live and for free (or at least at a discount). For those who don't feel like buying and installing an over-the-air antenna, here are your best streaming options.
