SAVE $22.50: Through March 21, Prime Video subscribers can add Mubi to their streaming lineup for only $7.49 per month for three months. Usually $14.99 per month, that's a total of $22.50 in savings.
Opens in a new window Credit: Mubi / Prime Video Mubi add-on for Prime Video $7.49/month for 3 months (save $7.50/month) Get DealIt's no secret that streamflation has priced out tons of subscribers. Streaming services really went overboard with their price hikes over the past few years, but every once in awhile you can still score a sweet discount. I'm always on the hunt for good streaming deals and as of March 10, this Mubi Prime Video add-on is 50% off.
Through March 21, Prime Video subscribers can add Mubi to their streaming lineup for just $7.49 per month for three months. It typically costs $14.99 per month, so over three months you'll save about $22.50.
Rather than subscribing to yet another streaming service separately, getting Mubi as a Prime Video add-on means you'll be charged for it in the same monthly streaming bill as your Prime Video or Amazon Prime membership. Plus, Mubi's content will appear within your Prime Video account. No need to download or open the Mubi app. Prime Video add-ons basically just expand your existing library.
If you've never heard of Mubi, it's a streaming service designed for cinephiles. It prides itself as the place to "discover ambitious films and series by visionary filmmakers — from iconic directors to emerging auteurs." You'll find some classics and mainstream movies, but also plenty of independent and obscure films. Mubi even has its own originals, including two of our favorites from 2025, Die My Love and The Mastermind, as well as one of our favorites from 2024, The Substance. It's also the place where you can watch Twin Peaks in its entirety, and Lili Reinhart's series Hal & Harper.
Streaming deals don't come around often. If you want to diversify your streaming lineup for less, be sure to secure this half-priced Mubi deal by March 21. And remember to cancel before your three-month promo period ends if you want to avoid paying full price.
A viral app to help men stop masturbating exposed thousands of users' data, 404 Media reports.
The app, Quittr, claims to be the "#1 Porn Addiction App to Quit Porn Forever" on its website. It apparently blocks porn websites on one's device, as well as tracks one's "abstinence" from porn. Quittr also has community features like groups, a "panic button" for "emergency nofap help" and even an AI therapist. ("Nofap" began as a Reddit community to stop masturbating, and experts warn against using AI for therapy.)
SEE ALSO: How to unblock Pornhub for free"Porn addiction," like "sex addiction," isn't recognized by the DSM-5, which classifies mental disorders. While porn-viewing can be compulsive, like other behaviors, research suggests that perceived porn addiction predicted distress over actual porn use itself. Yet, the idea of "porn addiction" persists in the U.S., which lacks comprehensive sex education requirements in many states; only 37 percent of states require sex education to be medically accurate, according to Boston University.
"Porn addiction," like "sex addiction," isn't recognized by the DSM-5, which classifies mental disorders.Meanwhile, for years, the "nofap" community on Reddit and elsewhere has purported the benefits of not ejaculating, from physical to mental boons, but there is limited research on the veracity of this.
In this environment, Quittr has thrived, with a 4.7 out of 5 rating based on around 29,000 ratings on Apple App Store, and a 4.8 out of 5 rating based on 8,400 ratings on Google Play. Its founders, Alex Slater and Connor McLaren, recently told New York Magazine that the app has been downloaded 1.5 million times and brings in $500,000 per month. (It costs users $30 per year.)
Now, 404 Media reports that Quittr leaked data about hundreds of thousands of users' masturbation habits as well as lied about its security issues.
A researcher told 404 Media that they scanned apps for a misconfiguration in apps that use the development platform Google Firebase, as that same issue was seen in the Tea app. The researcher found that Quittr had the same problem and contacted the founders about the issue, and while they said it would be fixed in an hour, it wasn't fixed for months.
Apparently, the researcher could access data for more than 600,000 users on Quittr, including 100,000 who identified as minors.
When 404 Media's Emanuel Maiberg called them, they denied there was an issue. But the misconfiguration has since been fixed, according to the report.

Sonos, a brand known for pricy but good speakers (and other audio equipment), has mostly been in the spotlight recently due to its botched mobile app, which came out in July 2024 and was so bad that it took the company many months to fix.
Now, finally, Sonos is back to what it does best: Producing high quality speakers (amazingly, the company hasn't launched any speakers since May 2024, if you don't count the Sonos Arc Ultra soundbar). Even better, Sonos' new speakers won't burn too big of a hole in your pocket.
At 1.3kg, Sonos Play is less than half the weight of Sonos Move 2. Credit: SonosThe first one on the menu is Sonos Play, a portable speaker that sits in between Sonos' ultra-portable Roam 2, and the hefty Move 2. Having reviewed the Move 2, I can tell you that something like Play was sorely needed; as great as it sounds, the Move 2 isn't all that portable.
Sonos Play is a portable, waterproof speaker with 24-hour battery life, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi support, a line-in jack, button controls, and a voice assistant. It offers stereo sound thanks to its dual, angled tweeters, and two bass radiators taking care of the lower sound frequencies. It also weighs 1.3 kilograms; this doesn't make it the lightest portable speaker out there, but it's a lot better than Move 2's 3 kilograms.
The other new Sonos speaker is called the Sonos Era 100 SL, and it's almost the new entry-level device in Sonos' lineup. I say almost, because at $189 it's still $10 pricier than the portable Sonos Roam 2, but it should technically offer more in terms of sound.
Sonos Era 100 SL: It's Sonos Era 100 for people who don't use voice control. Credit: SonosThe Era 100 SL is a cheaper version of the Sonos Era 100, which remains a part of Sonos' lineup. It also has stereo sound, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support, a line-in connector, and on speaker controls, but it lacks voice control. Both speakers look very similar and have dual tweeters and a woofer, so you can expect pretty much the same performance. The Era 100 SL is, simply put, the Era 100 for people who don't need voice control.
Sonos Play will become available on March 31 with a price tag of $299 (€349 in Europe). The Sonos Era 100 SL is coming on March 26 for $189 (€199 in Europe).
Google has announced several new Gemini-powered features across its Workspace apps, integrating its generative AI model in Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive. Intended to make starting projects easier, these new AI features enable Gemini to generate drafts with information pulled from your emails, chats, and files.
SEE ALSO: Google drops Gemini for Home updates: Here are 3 you should know"So, for example, for Google Docs, very often, the first step of starting any new writing project is all the manual prep," Google VP of Workspace Yulie Kwon Kim said in an interview with Mashable. "You spend a lot of time gathering your notes, digging through your emails, bringing together, hunting down all of the different files or sources, and all of that just to get to the first draft on the page. And so now, what we're doing is Gemini handles that for you."
Fortunately, Gemini won't dive into your personal correspondence uninvited. Users will first have to direct it to grab that information from your Gmail, Drive, or Chat via a prompt entered into a new text bar in each Workspace app. One prompt example provided by Google: "draft a newsletter for our neighbourhood association using the meeting minutes from my January HOA meeting and the list of upcoming events." In addition to telling Gemini whether to draw from your emails and files, you can also have it pull from resources online.
"So with a single prompt, in a new bottom bar on the bottom of Google Docs, you can basically tell Gemini what you want to do, and it will actually draw on your own Google Drive, your Gmail, your chat, to pull in information that can actually, in one shot, output a super helpful first draft, that you can then co-edit together with Gemini," said Kim.
"First, when you're actually first writing the prompt, you can actually indicate which sources you want Gemini to be able to source from. And then, at the output level, after it's generated, say that first draft of your [Doc], you can actually see exactly which emails or docs were used to generate the output. And then you can actually go in there and see. So it gives you two levels of visibility, when you're working with Gemini on this."
Here are all the new Gemini-powered AI features in Google Workspace.
Google Docs Credit: Mashable screenshot: GoogleIn addition to generating first drafts from users' data as mentioned above, Gemini can also edit sections of a document to "refine" and help "strengthen your message and build on your ideas." Users can highlight a section, click "refine," then give Gemini a prompt such as "make this doc more professional while keeping the tone energetic." This will generate a rewrite of the text you've highlighted guided by your prompt.
Google Docs' new Gemini features also enable it to alter sections of a document so that its tone, voice, and style is consistent with the rest. You can further generate a document to match the formatting of a different reference document — a tool directed at users who tend to base new documents on copies of older ones.
Google Sheets Credit: Mashable screenshot: GoogleSimilarly to Google Docs, Google Sheets will allow users to generate entire spreadsheets which pull data from your emails, chats, and Google Drive based on a prompt. In a prompt example provided by Google, users can ask Gemini to "organise my upcoming move to Chicago. Create a checklist for packing by room, a contact list for utilities and a spreadsheet to track moving company quotes from my inbox."
Gemini will also enter data into existing spreadsheets following plain English prompts, so you don't have to spend the type typing it in manually.
Google Slides Credit: Mashable screenshot: GoogleGoogle Slides' Gemini-powered upgrade won't allow you to generate an entire slide deck from a prompt just yet (though the company states that this feature is coming soon). However, it does enable you to generate individual slides for a preexisting deck, pulling data from Gmail, Drive, and the internet as directed.
You can then edit the generated slide manually or ask Gemini to do so with prompts such as "make this match the colours of the rest of my deck."
Google Drive Credit: Mashable screenshot: GoogleWhile Google Drive is used for storing and sharing files rather than creating them, it's getting the generative AI treatment as well. Specifically, Google Drive's search will now produce a Gemini-powered AI Overview summarising information from files it considers relevant to your inquiry (including citations). A feature previously introduced to Gmail, the AI Overview will appear at the top of your search results.
Google Drive is also getting a new "Ask Gemini in Drive" feature, which allows you to ask the chatbot questions about files, emails, calendars, and online content you select. For example, Google states that you could select your tax-related files and ask Gemini, "what should I ask my tax advisor before I file this year's tax returns?" These can be conversations rather than one-off inquiries as well.
"So, it's a really helpful and fun way, I think, to use Gemini, and what, I think is especially powerful, is that it's right there in your Google Doc," said Kim. "You don't need to go anywhere else to be able to have this level of Gemini capability. You don't need to learn another app, go toggle back and forth between two places. It's all right there, for you in Docs."
Google's new Gemini-powered features will begin rolling out in beta today, with Google AI Ultra and Pro subscribers the first to receive them. The new Docs, Sheets, and Slides features will be available in English globally, while the Drive features are only coming to the U.S. for now.
Google has been going in hard on Gemini recently, adding new AI features to everything from its Chrome browser to its Maps app. Though as always, you should never depend entirely on AI, and certainly not for important matters. While the technology may appear impressive, generative AI algorithms aren't perfect and remain prone to errors, which can have severe consequences when humans trust them uncritically. Remember that AI is known to hallucinate, inventing fake data that sounds real, so always double check what it tells you no matter which model you use.
After Apple unveiled the MacBook Neo, two competing opinions started to spread in the tech world. The MacBook Neo, with its fun colors and killer price, would either disrupt the entire Windows laptop market, or it would be an under-powered waste of space with a measly 8GB of RAM.
After trying it for myself, I'm sticking with my first impression: If I were a Windows laptop that cost under $1,000, I'd be shaking in my boots.
The MacBook Neo brings the premium features of a MacBook — Liquid Retina Display, the intuitive macOS, a sleek aluminum design — to an entirely new market segment: the budget laptop.
A lot of commentators are hung up on the fact that this device only has 8GB of RAM, but in my testing, it performed surprisingly well. Available starting March 11 for $599 — a version with Touch ID and 512GB costs $699 — I have zero doubt that Apple is going to sell millions of these things. And if you qualify for the $499 education discount, this is truly a laptop with no viable competition, full stop.
What is the MacBook Neo? And who is it for? The MacBook Neo in citrus and indigo at the Mashable office. Credit: Joe Maldonado / MashableThe MacBook Neo is Apple's first true attempt at a budget laptop, and its first MacBook without an M-series chip since 2020. By raising prices on the new MacBook Air and Pro models, Apple made space for a new type of MacBook — the Neo.
To be clear, the MacBook Neo is not a laptop for professionals like myself. If you need to do heavy-duty photo or video editing, work with 3D modeling programs, or run open-source AI models on your device, you'll want that Air or Pro with the latest M5 chips.
The Neo has an all-aluminum design; Apple matches the color of the keys to the aluminum. Credit: Joe Maldonado / Mashable SEE ALSO: MacBook Neo vs. MacBook Air (M5): How Apple's new laptops compareInstead, the MacBook Neo is meant to be baby's first laptop, and I mean that as a compliment. It's a starter laptop you might buy for a high school or college student, who will eventually graduate to the Air or Pro, depending on their needs. But I also foresee another popular use case for this device — the party laptop.
Lots of people, including myself, use two laptops on a daily basis. You have your work laptop — in my case, a MacBook Pro — and then you have what I call the party laptop, which is often a simple Chromebook. When your work day is done, you put away the work laptop with your email and calendar and fire up your party laptop for streaming, music, casual browsing, and retail therapy. The MacBook Neo would be a perfect party laptop or Chromebook alternative, and while it lacks storage and RAM, Apple definitely didn't skimp on the entertainment features.
We gotta talk about the colors Credit: Timothy Werth / MashableNo tech brand does design better than Apple, at least, not for the mass market. And the MacBook Neo comes in four colors: silver, indigo, citrus, and blush. Now, I will say, the blush is a very subtle pink. I say, if you're going pink, go pink. But in person, the citrus and indigo really pop. Apple also color-matches the keys to the aluminum finish. The Apple team is already having a lot of fun with this product launch, and I think shoppers will, too.
Let's look at the competition: Our No. 1 budget Windows laptop in 2026 is the Acer Aspire 16 AI, which costs $699. It's a good laptop, but it also has a flimsy hinge and plastic components. With the Neo, you get Apple's signature all-aluminum build quality, plus it's $100 cheaper, plus it comes in fun colors, plus it has Dolby Atmos speakers.
MacBook Neo: Performance and battery Be honest, did you notice the home screen artwork says "MAC"? Credit: Joe Maldonado / MashableTo be sure, you're not going to edit a professional music video, mix a song, or work on an animation project with 8GB of RAM and the A18 Pro chip, first introduced for the iPhone 16 Pro. But don't believe what the haters are saying online: You can still do a lot with 8GB of RAM.
Here's what people are forgetting: Over the past few years, Apple has quietly made its MacBook Air and Pro laptops way overpowered for the average user. (The same is true for the iPad Air and Pro, as I explain in my M4 iPad Air review.) The original M1 MacBook was a legendary laptop that truly changed the game. Six years later, I know professional film editors who are still working on M1-era MacBook Pros, and have zero complaints about performance or speed.
Apple M-series silicon changed the laptop market for good. Credit: Mashable SEE ALSO: Apple's M series chips are too powerful for their own goodAs you can see in this chart, ever since Apple launched the M1 chip in 2020, the company's M-series silicon has progressed by leaps and bounds. At one point, it seemed like Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite chip might finally offer some true competition for Apple silicon, but then Apple released a new M chip.
Apple's M series chips have made such massive leaps in performance that you have to be a serious superuser to tax these devices to their limits. So, a simpler MacBook with less firepower makes sense for a lot of reasons. You don't need 16GB of RAM and an M5 chip to stream Netflix, make Word documents, and send emails.
But let's get specific. Let's talk benchmarks.
MacBook Neo review: Geekbench performance and stress tests Credit: Joe Maldonado / MashableWhen testing a new laptop, Mashable runs a series of standardized tests, including the latest Geekbench 6 benchmark. The MacBook Neo received a multi-core score of 8,770, nearly identical to the 8,783 we recorded for the M1 MacBook Air. We also assessed its single-core performance, since that's a good measure of what we call snappiness, or how quickly it responds in everyday use. And this is where it gets interesting. The MacBook Neo achieved a single-core score of 3,484, significantly higher than most other laptops.
For reference, the Razer Blade 18 with an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX processor received a single-core score of 3,057. So, it's no wonder I've been able to do a surprising amount with the A18 Pro Chip.
I was able to edit a simple, cheesy video in Final Cut Pro using the MacBook Neo without struggling against the spinning wheel of death. Even when I layered video clips on top of each other and added a series of totally unnecessary transitions, the Neo handled the tasks just fine, as you can see for yourself:
For my MacBook Neo review, I also set up multiple Apple Shortcuts to perform complex tasks. I set up one Shortcut to automatically convert raw image files into JPEGs, crop them into a 16:9 aspect ratio, auto-adjust the color balance, hue, and saturation, and then save them in a specific folder. Using this Shortcut, the Neo edited a dozen massive image files with ease in under 30 seconds.
I set up another Shortcut to automatically convert all my video files into GIFs, also without problems. As I keep testing the Neo, I'm going to try Shortcuts that utilize Apple Intelligence and outside AI models, but Apple seems confident the Neo's A18 Pro chip and Neural Engine can handle it.
The MacBook Neo does have one big flaw The lack of Thunderbolt 4 ports is a big drawback. Credit: Joe Maldonado / MashableIn stress testing the Neo, I did find its kryptonite, which won't be a surprise. Because the Neo lacks a Thunderbolt 4 port, it can only offer transfer speeds of up to 10Gb/s, compared to 40Gb/s with the latest MacBook Air. Likewise, the A18 Pro chip offers 60GB/s memory bandwidth, compared to 153GB/s memory bandwidth on the M5 Air.
The A18 Pro chip offers:
6-core CPU (2 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores)
5-core GPU
16-core Neural Engine
The only time I encountered the spinning wheel of death? When importing or exporting large files. M-series MacBooks can multitask while doing this, but as you can see in my screen recording, the Neo really struggled to multitask while transferring large video files.
MacBook Neo battery lifeApple promises "all-day" battery life with the Neo. Specifically, the company promises up to 16 hours of battery for video streaming (and 11 hours for wireless web browsing). In our battery rundown test, we got exactly 14 hours and 50 minutes of battery performance.
If you want the MacBook Neo to last for an entire day of classes or a long travel day, I think it will be up for the challenge.
MacBook Neo: Display and speakers The headphones jack and side-firing speakers. Credit: Joe Maldonado / MashableThe MacBook Neo has the same Liquid Retina display tech that you'll find on the $1,099 M5 MacBook Air and other Apple laptops. (The Neo's Display is 0.9 inches smaller than the Air, however.) It can offer up to 500 nits of brightness on its 13-inch, 2,408 x 1,506 resolution display. The color, clarity, and sharpness are as impressive as ever, particularly when you compare them to the average Windows laptop in this price range. It's a premium display in a budget laptop.
The MacBook Neo isn't simply a MacBook Air with a bunch of performance sacrifices, however. Apple actually improved the speaker system for the Neo (further solidifying it in my mind as the party laptop). Apple added two side-firing speakers, which you might mistake for SD card readers at first. The result is a speaker system that's surprisingly loud, clear, and compatible with Dolby Atmos.
MacBook Neo: What's missing? The MacBook Neo has the MacBook's signature all-aluminum design. Credit: Joe Maldonado / MashableThe MacBook Neo does make both performance and hardware sacrifices to keep its price low, of course. Before buying the Neo, you need to understand what you're not getting:
No 12MP Center Stage Camera (the Neo has a 1080p FaceTime HD camera)
No True Tone technology
No fast-charging capabilities
No Thunderbolt 4 ports (it has one USB-C 3 and one USB-C 2 port)
Only supports one external display
$599 version only has 256GB of memory and no Touch ID (the $699 version has 512GB and Touch ID)
The MacBook Neo has a Magic Keyboard, but it's not backlit like you're used to. It also features a different trackpad. While it's extra-clicky, it's not quite as nice as a standard MacBook. That's hardly a breaking point, though.
Final thoughts: Is the MacBook Neo worth it? Credit: Joe Maldonado / MashableI still want to do more testing, and I'll be updating my MacBook Neo review soon. My next test will be to set up some AI models on the device and see what the Neural Engine can and can't really handle. But as someone who works with a lot of video, photography, and AI tools, the MacBook Neo can handle quite a bit of my daily workflow. First-time buyers will also appreciate how easily it works with the iPhone and iPad. Your files can instantly sync across devices, and AirDrop fills any gaps.
Like I said, if you're comparing the $599 MacBook Neo with a similarly priced Windows laptop or Chromebook, it's going to be really hard to say no to the Neo. Unless Apple seriously stocked up, I wouldn't be surprised if this device sells out in the near future.
Apple MacBook Neo (A18 Pro, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) $599 at AmazonAuthor Andy Weir has single-handedly shaken up how moviegoers imagine astronauts. For a wide swatch of sci-fi movies, from 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Right Stuff, Gravity, Apollo 13, Interstellar, to First Man, the business of going to space in the movies has been serious stuff.
Then came Matt Damon as a charmingly goofy botanist in 2015's The Martian, adapted from Weir's award-winning novel. Director Ridley Scott and screenwriter Drew Goddard turned a novel about growing potatoes and doing calculations into a crowd-pleasing comedy that even impressed critics. Now, Weir's work is back on the big screen with Project Hail Mary, which once more has Goddard penning the adapted screenplay. But this time, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, The LEGO Movie) take the helm, and it's Canadian movie star Ryan Gosling (The Fall Guy, Barbie) who's stepping into the spacesuit. Still, this sister film has a satisfyingly similar energy and thrust to its unserious astronaut tale.

Project Hail Mary offers a world-ending threat. Ryan Gosling plays Ryland Grace and Sandra Hüller as Eva Stratt in "Project Hail Mary." Credit: Amazon MGM StudiosBased on Weir's 2022 novel of the same name, Project Hail Mary centers on Ryland Grace (Gosling), a junior high school science teacher with a background in molecular biology. While he is one of the sharpest minds in his field, his people skills are — let's say — lacking. Grace is impulsive, passionate, and prone to making jokes that cause his stern science peers to bristle. So, instead of groundbreaking discoveries, he's patiently explaining to his students about the news reports that an unknown form of electromagnetic radiation is eating our sun. If this continues, the whole world will be uninhabitable in 30 years.
What's to be done? Cue the stone-faced Eva Stratt (Anatomy of a Fall's Sandra Hüller), turning up to firmly pressure Mr. Grace away from the schoolyard and into a testing facility for the titular Project Hail Mary. All the scientists and governments from around the world are combining resources to launch an exploratory mission to understand this sun-eating "Astrophage" so mankind might stop it.
Grace is chosen to be an astronaut on this journey. However, upon waking from an induced coma on the ship, he suffers from a memory loss that makes his already complicated mission even harder. But in a cosmic stroke of luck, Grace finds an ally in the stars. Specifically, he meets a brilliant alien, who looks like a spider made of rocks, and thus nicknames "Rocky."
Featured Video For You Matthew Lillard reveals how he's back in 'Scream 7' — through telepathy Ryan Gosling has great chemistry with an alien puppet in Project Hail Mary. Ryan Gosling plays Ryland Grace in "Project Hail Mary." Credit: Amazon MGM StudiosThe first hurdle Grace and Rocky have to conquer is how to communicate. They build a bridge with Grace's dance moves and the alien's ability to spin webbing that's basically like his own personal 3D printer. But soon, each of these unusual astronauts uses their respective's ship's resources to innovate a better means to speak to each other. From there, Rocky's voice is human, in English, and performed by James Oritz, who is also the puppeteer behind the rock-based alien's movements.
Now, it's easy to say something like, "Ryan Gosling is so charming he could have chemistry with a rock." And look, that is true. But truly, Oritz's performance of Rocky is so dynamic and alive that such a cheeky description would undercut his skills here. Grace and Rocky are great together, bouncing off each other with sharp comic timing and an unapologetic silliness and earnestness.
On a first watch, they're very funny. On reflection, the filmmakers have built a clever character development into this friendship through its comedy dynamics. On Earth, Grace is a genius but also a screwball, who can't take himself seriously. Asked to help on the mission, he bellows at Eva that he's "not an astronaut." He stands out in a room of suits and scientists, not only because he favors a cozy cardigan with animals knit within its design, but also because his energy is eruptive, while they are all dedicatedly composed.
In space, however, he transforms from a buffoon to the straight man. Rocky, who is a fish out of water among Grace's pop culture references and quips, is the wide-eyed stooge. So, each joke that Grace makes has a one-two punch. The first hits the audience as Grace intends, as we'll catch his references to the movie Rocky, or observational humor about the ways of mankind. The second is Rocky naively misunderstanding such jokes, lost in translation even with super advanced translating tech!
Through this humor, and their urgent, eager desire to collaborate, both astronauts grow in their abilities scientifically, socially, and psychologically. They become friends, and Grace begins to understand the world — and himself — in a new way. Creepingly the film becomes about who we can be if we take the risk of meeting others where they are. And while I'm reviewing this movie in a chronologically straightforward way, Project Hail Mary is more temporally slippery in its narrative. The timeline slides back and forth between Earth and space, with Grace trying to remember what led him here as he recovers from the memory loss. Beyond that, this device builds in a jolting surprise, that breaks and broadens our idea of the film's hero at a pivotal moment.
Ryan Gosling offers a career-best turn in Project Hail Mary. Ryan Gosling plays Ryland Grace in "Project Hail Mary." Credit: Amazon MGM StudiosGosling has played an astronaut before in First Man. But his performance in Project Hail Mary is stellar. He shrugs off the austere astronaut attitude, sliding into the rumpled educator angst from Half Nelson. The comical exasperation he brought to the buddy-cop comedy The Nice Guys is folded into the earnest wonder of Barbie's Ken as he discovered Century City. Then, gently Gosling works in a fragile pathos of self-doubt, one that transforms Grace from a quirky astronaut into a flesh-and-blood man, battling his worst fears to give hope to a new friend. In this atmosphere, every laugh and gasp hits right in the solar plexus, rattling our tender hearts with absolute intention.
Gosling is perfectly cast as this fearful, funny astronaut. And Oritz is a phenomenal co-star, breathing life into an alien unlike any the movies have awed over before. With Weir's incredible story, Goddard has built another astounding crowdpleaser. Lord and Miller craft sci-fi spectacle that is awesome and emotional, while making sure the movie science is easy enough for the layman to follow without getting snagged in the details. Admittedly, the film's final act loses momentum. But overall, the journey and the destination of Project Hail Mary are sensational stuff. Simply put, movies like this demand to be seen in theaters.
