Apples M3 iPad Air (256GB) gets a free cellular upgrade during Amazons Big Spring Sale — save $200

Mashable - Sat, 03/28/2026 - 14:31

SAVE $199.01: The 11-inch Apple iPad Air (M3, WiFi + Cellular, 256GB) is discounted to $649.99 during Amazon's Big Spring Sale. That's 23% off its $849 MSRP, its biggest discount to date. It now costs the same as a WiFi-only model.

$849 Save $199.01   Get Deal

Apple announced the M4 iPad Air earlier this month, which means Amazon is clearing out its remaining stock of the (very similar) M3 version during its Big Spring Sale this week. If you're hunting for a bargain on a pretty, peppy, and portable tablet, look no further.

In one of the sale's best last-gen tech deals, an 11-inch M3 iPad Air with 256GB of storage and cellular connectivity is marked down to just $649.99 on Amazon as of March 28 — a 23% discount on its usual retail price of $849. Not only has it never been cheaper before, but it now costs the same as its also-on-sale WiFi-only counterpart (normally $699, currently $649). You're effectively getting the cellular upgrade for free.

SEE ALSO: Amazon's Spring Sale is surprisingly good this year: We found 150+ deals on Apple, Kindle, Bose, and Ninja

I wouldn't be surprised if this deal sold out well before the Big Spring Sale wraps on March 31. (For now, it applies to all four colorways: purple, blue, starlight, and space gray.) The 128GB version of the same iPad Air is now out of stock after Amazon gave it a $200 discount at the start of the event on March 25.

A new 11-inch M4 iPad Air with the same specs will cost you $840 at the moment, or $190 more, and I have a tough time justifying that upcharge since it's such an iterative update. It just features a little more RAM, newer wireless standards for some extra future-proofing, and a small performance bump. (Per Mashable Tech Editor Timothy Beck-Werth, "the M3 chip is still powerful enough for 99 percent of users.") Otherwise, the two iPad Airs have the same bright Liquid Retina display, 12MP cameras, Dolby Atmos speakers, and 1.03-pound build.

For what it's worth, I was only seeing this M3 iPad Air deal on Amazon at the time of writing. The same configuration was going for $799 at Best Buy; the Apple Store no longer carries it.

FCC listing suggests the Trump T1 phone is somehow actually real

Mashable - Sat, 03/28/2026 - 14:02

The Trump T1 smartphone saga has dragged on for almost a full year since its announcement last summer, and at every step of that process, it's felt like a fake product that will never come out... until now.

In its endless quest to document this elusive smartphone, The Verge found a series of FCC listings for a phone called "T1" that suggest the product was tested and granted certification by the federal agency over the past few months. As is common with FCC listings, the documents are largely redacted and contain no photos or other useful information about the phone itself. They also don't reference Trump or any of the other corporate entities previously attached to the phone, such as "Trump Mobile," instead referring to a new company called Smart Gadgets Global. That company's CEO is Eric Thomas, who is an established executive at Trump Mobile.

SEE ALSO: Advertisers shift to conservative creators over progressives under Trump

So, while all of this is weird and vaguely suspicious, we can confirm that the FCC has certified a phone called the T1, which was submitted by a Trump Mobile executive. All of this will be a lot more believable if/when the phone is actually in people's hands, but for now, we have to at least act like the T1 is real.

The T1 was announced last June as a $500 "made in America" Android device with a golden exterior, somewhat respectable specs, and a target audience of true patriots. It didn't take long for people to realize that some major components couldn't have been made in America, and the phone missed its original September release date. It was delayed again in December, somewhat shockingly, before re-emerging in February with new specs and an altered appearance. That $500 price was also revealed at that time to be for early adopters only, with later customers being subject to an undetermined higher price point.

To be clear, there is still every possibility that the T1 is not real and will never come out. But it looks more real today than it did a week ago.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 translator says developers fired him to use AI

Mashable - Sat, 03/28/2026 - 13:40

In the latest iteration of "AI comes for our jobs," the English translator for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 now claims that the game's developers, Czech-based Warhorse Studios, are planning to replace all translation work with artificial intelligence, making his job "obsolete."

Max Hejtmánek, the game's long-time English translator, took to Reddit earlier today to announce his layoff in a post titled "Fired from Warhorse Studios and replaced with AI" in the r/kingdomcome subreddit. The subreddit's moderators claim to have verified his identity, while an update to Hejtmánek's LinkedIn profile indicates he's no longer working for Warhorse.

The post begins with the worry that many people, especially in creative industries, now share: "Yesterday, March 27th 2026, with no forewarning, I was invited to a meeting and promptly told that, in an effort to "make the company more effective" and "save finances", as of next month, my position at the company would become "obsolete" in favour of using AI for all translations going forward."

SEE ALSO: AI translator turns English into LinkedIn speak

According to Hejtmánek, he had been working at Warhorse Studios since 2022, doing Czech-to-English translation work, and his layoff is just the latest in a series of high-profile job losses that underscore how disruptive artificial intelligence has been in creative industries.

It also raises important questions about AI's incursion into art, for while it's undoubtedly true that artificial intelligence can perform fast, cheap translation work — just as it can create fast, cheap cartoons, action sequences, movie dialogue, etc. — it's also true that removing the human element from art work necessarily cheapens the final product and even calls into question the entire enterprise: if art is no longer a human project but a machine one, what possible purpose does it serve?

Hejtmánek alluded to this problem in his original post: "I want you to know that the growing use of AI greatly affects people in the games industry and many others, and I thought you should know how much the company that makes the games you love value the work of their employees, not to mention the environment."

Today, the translator of a game was replaced, but what's next? The story writer? The design artists? The voice actors? How many human roles can be lost to AI before the entire enterprise gets called into question? And, as Max points out, what does it say about a company so eager to replace its human workforce with an AI one?

Mini Kindle Pods are trending on TikTok, but these devices arent what they seem

Mashable - Sat, 03/28/2026 - 12:51

Among passionate TikTok communities, BookTok, may be the most influential.

BookTok is where book lovers and e-reader obsessives to come together to discuss their favorite books and device hacks. For readers who use e-readers, Kindle, Kobo, and Boox lead the charge as the most popular devices, so it's notable when a new device goes viral. "Mini Kindles" appear to be the latest device to cause a stir on BookTok, with hundreds of videos showcasing the tiny e-readers.

On TikTok, searching for "mini Kindle" (or "mini Kindle pods") brings up dozens of user videos showing someone walking into a Barnes & Noble or Target and then cutting to an unboxing of a so-called "mini Kindle". As someone who tests e-readers for a living, this confused me.

I have no reason to believe these e-readers are actually being purchased at Barnes & Noble, nor do they have any apparent affiliation with Amazon Kindles.

In fact, the devices being hyped in these videos appear to be sold by the users who post them.

In a since-deleted video, user @aurealeaf directs viewers to the website NovaLeaf, where the "NovaLeaf Mini Kindle" is listed. (Editor's note: As of this writing, the @aurealeaf account is no longer available.) Another user, @hydro_scope, directs viewers to their website with a listing for a NOVA Mini Pink Kindle. Both devices claim to be pocket-sized e-readers under the Kindle name, despite no affiliation with Amazon.

We reached out to both @aurealeaf and @hydro_scope, and we'll update this post if we receive a response.

Are mini Kindle pods actually Kindles?

These mini Kindles do not seem to be actual Kindle e-readers or associated with Amazon at all, nor does Amazon sell any mini version of the Kindle e-readers. We reached out for comment from Amazon and have not heard back at the time of publication.

By performing reverse image searches on Nova and NovaLeaf websites, I found that the "mini Kindles" listed for sale there are visual matches for devices manufactured by a company called Oilsky. They appear to be 4-inch touchscreen MP3 and 1080p video players. With built-in access to the Google Play store, the Kindle app is available to download onto the device; however, that appears to be the only connection to Amazon.

The Oilsky MP3 player and copycat versions are currently listed on Amazon. These TikTok-based sellers have their mini Kindles listed for $79.99, about $10 more than the direct Oilsky listing on Amazon. Oilsky MP3 players are not listed for sale at Barnes & Noble or Target.

In short, the viral TikTok videos are using the word "Kindle" to refer to any e-reader-like device and may be at risk of legal action from Amazon.

As of this writing, the @aurealeaf TikTok account is no longer available.

Meta to fund natural gas plants to power its largest data center

Mashable - Sat, 03/28/2026 - 11:41

Meta, one of the mega-corporations advancing artificial intelligence the fastest, has agreed to underwrite the energy costs of its newest and largest data center in Northeast Louisiana, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Currently under construction in Richland Parish, Louisiana, the new data center is projected to cost $27 billion and consume up to 5 gigawatts of power, enough to power approximately 1 million homes. In an attempt to convey the scale of the undertaking, and while sounding like a James Bond villain without realizing it, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg described the finished data center as "so large it would cover a significant part of Manhattan."

SEE ALSO: Meta, YouTube found guilty of negligence in history-making social media addiction trial

But to ensure that the good people of Louisiana don't subsidize the undertaking with absurdly high electricity bills, Meta has signed an agreement with Entergy Louisiana to privately fund new energy infrastructure throughout the state, including seven new natural gas power plants with a total energy output of 5,200 megawatts, 240 miles of 500-kilovolt transmission lines, and three new battery storage locations to help store excess energy.

Fears about the economic disruptions caused by artificial intelligence, as well as the rising toll on the environment and local energy grids, have crossed political lines, with a recent poll finding that majorities of registered Democrats, Republicans, and independents support stronger regulation of AI and data centers. However, the same poll also found that majorities across all age groups continue to use AI at least once a month.

First Western Digital, now Sony: The tech giant suspends SD card sales

Mashable - Sat, 03/28/2026 - 11:00

The global memory shortage due to rapid AI data center expansion is hitting everyone, even the biggest tech companies in the world.

Case in point: Sony is suspending orders for almost all SD card sales from both vendors and consumers, per PetaPixel. The announcement was made on Sony's Japanese website, and explicitly blamed the lack of available memory as a reason why it can't fulfill SD card orders for the time being. Sony's full statement is as follows:

Thank you for your continued patronage of Sony products.

Due to the global shortage of semiconductors (memory) and other factors, it is anticipated that supply will not be able to meet demand for CFexpress memory cards and SD memory cards for the foreseeable future. Therefore, we have decided to temporarily suspend the acceptance of orders from our authorized dealers and from customers at the Sony Store from March 27, 2026 onwards.

Regarding the resumption of order acceptance, we will consider it while monitoring the supply situation and will announce it separately on the product information page.

SEE ALSO: PS5, PS5 Pro price hikes announced as Sony blames economic pressures

CFExpress Type A and Type B cards, as well as regular SD cards, are all affected by this move. Some low-end cards appear to still be in production, per PetaPixel, but as it stands, just assume that any card you see on a store shelf is the last one you'll see there for a while from Sony. The company's statement even straight up said that it doesn't know when it will be able to get the manufacturing up and running again.

Sony follows Western Digital as a fellow big tech memory manufacturer that is feeling the squeeze from the needs of data centers. Western Digital announced in February that it had sold out of all hard drives for the year, with 10 whole months to go. This wasn't a great week for Sony in general, as the company also announced massive price hikes on its current-gen PlayStation video game consoles, most likely for the same reasons that it had to stop making SD cards.

Apple blocks developer from updating Mac app because its similar to a defunct feature

Mashable - Sat, 03/28/2026 - 10:18

Mac users mourning the loss of Launchpad have found solace in a few third-party apps that replicate its functionality. However, one popular replacement, AppGrid, is now being blocked by Apple from receiving updates in the App Store.

Why? According to the app's developer, Apple told them it's too similar to Launchpad, which, again, no longer exists on the Mac.

Launchpad was an iPad-like app grid on the Mac, accessible from the dock. Apple released Launchpad alongside Mac OS X Lion in July 2011. When a user clicked Launchpad in the dock, a pop-up filled the screen with all the apps installed on the Mac. Users could curate and order the apps in Launchpad, however they liked.

SEE ALSO: iOS 26.4 available now: All updates, security improvements to know

However, Apple killed off Launchpad with macOS Tahoe, released last September. Launchpad was replaced with a new app called Apps. However, Apps simply lists the Mac's apps in alphabetical order, with no way to sort the app icons. In addition, the search function in Apps is buggy and doesn't always find the app that a user is looking for.

Many Mac users were quite unhappy with Apple removing Launchpad. Third-party developers have since stepped in to replace Launchpad, launching their own apps with their take on the feature.

One of the more popular Launchpad replacements in Apple's official App Store is AppGrid. However, according to its developer, Attila Miklósi, Apple is blocking the app's ability to release new updates in the App Store.

According to Apple's developer guidelines, apps cannot be “confusingly similar to an existing Apple product or interface.” However, Launchpad no longer exists in the latest version of macOS. Apple is essentially blocking developers from creating a feature that no longer exists.

Miklósi says that Apple shared that they would accept updates if AppGrid looked less like Launchpad did when it existed. However, the developer is hesitant to change AppGrid's look, as thousands of users have already paid for the version that looks like it currently does.

While Miklósi has maintained the app with updates through direct downloads on AppGrid's website, the App Store version hasn't been updated since November 2025.

As Miklósi points out, Apple oddly didn't remove the app from the App Store. Users can still buy the Pro version of the app too, giving Apple its percentage of the App Store revenue cut. However, the AppGrid version in the App Store can't be updated there and is essentially in a "zombie state" due to Apple's policies.

My favorite smart glasses are at record prices for the Amazon Spring Sale — prices start at $249

We're halfway through the Amazon Big Spring Sale 2026, and my favorite AR smart glasses from Xreal and TCL are all on sale.

As Mashable's tech editor, I get to test out (and geek out over) a lot of cool gadgets. This year, I've been focused on a lot of virtual reality and augmented reality products, particularly smart glasses.

SEE ALSO: Amazon Big Spring Sale 2026: Live updates on the best deals

I tested a ton of smart glasses at CES 2026, and most recently, I put the new TCL RayNeo Air 4 Pro AR/XR Glasses through their paces. And as I mentioned, these futuristic smart glasses are only $249 during the Amazon spring sale. These glasses were just released in late February, and an on-page coupon lets you take $50 off the retail price of $299.

In my TCL RayNeo Air 4 Pro review, I said that these AR glasses are like an OLED TV you can wear, and they're designed for entertainment and gaming. Wherever you are, they project a 201-inch virtual display into the air. They're the first smart glasses with an HDR display, and they're almost twice as bright as the competition.

While I enjoyed testing (and watching The Lord of the Rings) on the new RayNeo smart glasses, the pair I actually use most often come from Xreal, the market leader in this niche.

Xreal's AR glasses can produce an ultra-wide display that you can anchor in place in your field of view, giving you an extra monitor. I've found they're really useful when working on an airplane or on the go. The Xreal One Pro AR Glasses have way more customization options than the RayNeo and a new AI 3D conversion feature.

Finally, Xreal recently released the Xreal 1S AR Glasses, which offer big upgrades at a lower price. The 1S can project a 500-inch virtual screen. If you want to work, go with the One Pro. If you want to work and watch movies or game, go with the 1S. Both are on sale at record prices.

Bear in mind that smart glasses are still in their infancy as a product category, and even the best AR glasses have some issues. But if you're an early adopter who wants to explore the augmented world, TCL and Xreal are the brands I'd recommend.

Crucially, none of these glasses feature cameras. Smart glasses with cameras have always felt a bit creepy to me, and as Mashable has reported, creeps do seem to love Meta-Ray Ban smart glasses.

Victim of Jeffrey Epstein files class-action lawsuit against Google

Mashable - Sat, 03/28/2026 - 10:01

There's more legal trouble brewing for Google, as a victim of Jeffrey Epstein has filed a class action suit against the world's largest search engine, alleging its AI Mode improperly published personal information about sex trafficking victims.

The problem began with the Department of Justice, whose rollout of the Epstein files, following the passage of the Epstein Files Transparency Act last year, was riddled with hasty redactions, which often protected the identities of alleged perpetrators while the identities of victims were left unconcealed.

SEE ALSO: Jmail creators release Jeffrey Epstein’s calendar as JCal

The DOJ, however, has acknowledged the errors and removed the personal information from its website. The problem now lies with Google, and more specifically, its artificial intelligence, which trawled the initial, unredacted document dump and still hosts the sensitive personal information of sex trafficking victims.

"Even after the government acknowledged the disclosure violated the rights of survivors and withdrew the information, online entities like Google continuously republish it, refusing [the] victim’s pleas to take it down," the lawsuit reads.

The allegations don't stop there. Not only did Google knowingly refuse to remove the sensitive information, which includes "full name, contact information, cities of residence, and association with Jeffrey Epstein," but the AI also allegedly "generated a hypertext link allowing anyone to send direct email to Plaintiff with the click of a button."

Worse still, for Google: the lawsuit alleges that other artificial intelligence companies did not improperly publish victim information: "Notably, several other publicly available AI tools that generate content by analyzing online sources, such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity, provided no victim-related information whatsoever in similar repeated testing."

This latest lawsuit comes on the heels of a damning Los Angeles jury ruling that found both Meta and Google-owned YouTube liable for "designing products that addict and harm children," prioritizing online engagement over the well-being of their users.

At the time of writing, Google has not issued a public statement on the lawsuit, but a verdict in this trial could set important precedents for privacy protections in the age of AI, with implications that would ripple across the tech landscape.

NYT Pips hints, answers for March 28, 2026

Mashable - Sat, 03/28/2026 - 09:50

Welcome to your guide to Pips, the latest game in the New York Times catalogue.

Released in August 2025, the Pips puts a unique spin on dominoes, creating a fun single-player experience that could become your next daily gaming habit.

Currently, if you're stuck, the game only offers to reveal the entire puzzle, forcing you to move onto the next difficulty level and start over. However, we have you covered! Below are piecemeal answers that will serve as hints so that you can find your way through each difficulty level.

How to play Pips

If you've ever played dominoes, you'll have a passing familiarity for how Pips is played. As we've shared in our previous hints stories for Pips, the tiles, like dominoes, are placed vertically or horizontally and connect with each other. The main difference between a traditional game of dominoes and Pips is the color-coded conditions you have to address. The touching tiles don't necessarily have to match.

SEE ALSO: Wordle today: Answer, hints for March 28, 2026

The conditions you have to meet are specific to the color-coded spaces. For example, if it provides a single number, every side of a tile in that space must add up to the number provided. It is possible – and common – for only half a tile to be within a color-coded space.

Here are common examples you'll run into across the difficulty levels:

  • Number: All the pips in this space must add up to the number.

  • Equal: Every domino half in this space must be the same number of pips.

  • Not Equal: Every domino half in this space must have a completely different number of pips.

  • Less than: Every domino half in this space must add up to less than the number.

  • Greater than: Every domino half in this space must add up to more than the number.

The NYT's latest daily word game has launched in association with The Athletic, the New York Times property that provides the publication's sports coverage. Connections can be played on both web browsers and mobile devices and require players to group four words that share something in common.

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

Each puzzle features 16 words and each grouping of words is split into four categories. These sets could comprise of anything from book titles, software, country names, etc. Even though multiple words will seem like they fit together, there's only one correct answer.

If a player gets all four words in a set correct, those words are removed from the board. Guess wrong and it counts as a mistake — players get up to four mistakes until the game ends.

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

Players can also rearrange and shuffle the board to make spotting connections easier. Additionally, each group is color-coded with yellow being the easiest, followed by green, blue, and purple. Like Wordle, you can share the results with your friends on social media.

There’s just something about major sale events and giant TVs. Thankfully, the Amazon Big Spring Sale is here — running through March 31 — with knockdown prices on all sorts of categories, from tech and headphones to drones and Apple devices.  And if you are in the market for a new TV, we recommend taking a look at its lineup of discounted Hisense TVs.

This TV uses Mini LED display technology and QLED color, as well as AI-powered picture processing and upscaling, to deliver stunning visuals.

You’ll find all your favorite streaming apps through the Fire TV operating system, plus an arsenal of features for dedicated gamers: A 144Hz refresh rate, a Game Mode Pro, and super low latency. If you’re more of a movie buff, you’ll enjoy its Filmmaker Mode which smartly optimizes the movie to look and sound as the filmmaker intended. There are more modestly sized versions of his TV available in the Big Spring Sale but for sheer value per inch, this one’s hard to beat.

Bose is late to the party, but the popular audio tech brand is finally getting involved in Amazon’s Big Spring Sale. There are now deals on three of its best models: the flagship QuietComfort over-ear headphones, premium QuietComfort Ultra headphones, and the innovative Bose Ultra Open Earbuds.

While none of these are currently at their lowest-ever price, they’re still at significant discounts for such high-ticket headphones. These join a stack of other deals on headphones in the Big Spring Sale, which runs through March 31.

We’ll keep tracking deals on headphones throughout the sale, so if you’re specifically looking for Bose discounts, keep tabs on this page as the Big Spring Sale continues.

The Bose QuietComfort Headphones are tried and tested and well-regarded — they're one of the go-to models for tech-savvy music lovers. They boast highly-rated active noise cancellation with two ANC modes — Quiet mode to shut out external noise completely and Aware mode that keeps you in tune with your surroundings. The sound is excellent and customisable via EQ settings on the Bose Music. Oh, and did we mention they look super stylish and available in lots of colorways? These are headphones that make a streetwise statement. That’s all reflected in the usual price point of $349, which makes this $100 discount a sweet-sounding offer.

The Bose QuietComfort Ultra are an upgrade of the brand’s flagship headphones thanks to added spatialized audio — 3D audio technology that places the sound all around you for a fully immersive listening experience. They also boast Bose’s signature noise cancellation, which combines with spatialized audio to create next-level Immersion and Cinema modes. And the noise cancellation isn’t just active, it’s adaptive, which means it reacts to your surroundings and adjusts in real time. This isn’t their lowest price — they previously dropped to $379 — but they’re now just $20 shy of that mark.

A Big Spring Sale discount on the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds is very welcome indeed. These babies are pricey for earbuds but for good reason: They’re a premium, innovative addition to the still-developing open earbud category. Rather than jam into your ear canal and close you off from the outside world, they clip to your ear and use OpenAudio tech to deliver immersive spatialised sound. You can still hear your surroundings but there’s no audio leakage. Your tunes are totally private. As with the QuietComfort Ultra they’re just $20 off their lowest-ever price, with a current saving of $70 on offer.

Sonys best budget headphones just dropped under $45

Mashable - Sat, 03/28/2026 - 07:00

SAVE 37%: As of March 28, you can get the Sony WH-CH520 wireless headphones for $43.95, down from $69.99, at Amazon. That's a 37% discount or $26.04 price cut.

If you prefer on-ear headphones over earbuds (I hate how those little drivers feel crammed in my ears, too!), Mashable's Alex Bracetti says the Sony WH-CH520 are the best headphones under $50, period. At just $43.95 during Amazon's Big Spring Sale (a 37% drop from the $69.90 list price), they're an easy and affordable recommendation.

SEE ALSO: Amazon Big Spring Sale 2026: Live updates on the top deals

The Sony WH-CH520 offer up to 50 hours of playtime on a single charge, and if you forget to plug them in, a quick three-minute charge will buy you another 1.5 hours of listening time. While they don't have active noise cancellation or a 3.5mm audio jack for wired listening, they still deliver a sound profile that is "nicely balanced," where "deep lows blend well with transparent mids and crisp highs."

They also feature Sony's DSEE technology to upscale compressed music files. "This technology upscales the clarity and depth on all tracks — no matter the format — achieving near-hi-res quality when playing stored files or streaming music online," writes Bracetti.

Even though the plastic construction feels a bit flimsy and the on-ear design lets in some ambient noise, getting Sony's proprietary sound tech and multipoint Bluetooth connection (so you can connect to two devices at the same time) makes them an unbeatable value at this price.
