Trump admin takes safety out of U.S. AI Safety Institute

Mashable - Wed, 06/04/2025 - 12:43

President Donald Trump's directive to rebrand the U.S AI Safety Institute will eliminate "safety" from its name. Instead, the AISI, which worked with private tech companies to asses the safety risks of AI, will be renamed the Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI).

According to Axios, which broke the news on May 29, the new CAISI will retain much of the same function, with an added focus on international coordination.

SEE ALSO: What is Palantir? The secretive tech company behind Trump's data collection efforts

Launched in 2023 by President Joe Biden, AISI was housed under the Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology. Its original mandate was to assess the risks posed by systems like ChatGPT and Claude. Then, after Trump came back into office, and Elon Musk's “DOGE” team added to the mix, insiders expected the institute to be dissolved entirely.

In February, AISI was excluded from the Paris AI Summit hosted by Trump’s team. By March, researchers were told to prioritize audits that reduced "ideological bias" in the systems they reviewed.

What exactly CAISI will do now remains unclear. Per Axios, the former AISI's responsibilities won't deviate that much, but judging from its new name and comments from Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, the focus appears to be tilting toward acceleration, not caution.

"For far too long, censorship and regulations have been used under the guise of national security," Lutnick said in a statement. "Innovators will no longer be limited by these standards. CAISI will evaluate and enhance U.S. innovation of these rapidly developing commercial AI systems while ensuring they remain secure to our national security standards."

Federal judge: A social media ban for kids under 14 is unconstitutional

Mashable - Wed, 06/04/2025 - 12:15

A federal judge blocked Florida officials from enforcing a law that would bar social media for kids under the age of 14.

In the ruling, U.S. District Judge Mark Walker wrote that "Florida’s challenged law is likely unconstitutional" but added the court "does not doubt that parents and legislators in the state have sincere concerns about the effects that social media use may have on youth."

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the bill in March of 2024 that would bar kids under 14 years old from social media and require parental permission for those who are 14 or 15. Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat already require users to be at least 13 years old, while TikTok has a curated, watch-only version for kids under 13. It's worth noting these restrictions are in-line with an existing federal law that restricts data collection on users under the age of 13.

SEE ALSO: Social media now unlawful for kids under 14 in Florida

In the judge's order granting the preliminary injunction, he wrote the law "directly burdens those youths’ rights to engage in and access speech." Internet trade group NetChoice challenged the law over free speech concerns as well as the burden and risk of requiring mass identity verification.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier defended the state law and said the state intended to appeal the decision. Lawmakers felt the law could help curb the potential harm from young people using social media.

"These platforms do not have a constitutional right to addict kids to their products,” Uthmeier’s press secretary Jae Williams said in a statement, via the Associated Press. “We disagree with the court’s order and will immediately seek relief in the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.”

So it seems despite the judge's decision, this saga is far from over.

Where to buy the Nintendo Switch 2 in person on launch day

Mashable - Wed, 06/04/2025 - 11:57

TL;DR: The highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 launches on June 5. If you missed out on preorders, you might want to try your luck in person at the following retailers: Best Buy, Target, Staples, GameStop, Costco, Sam's Club, and Walmart.

The entire lead-up to the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 has been a mess. President Trump's tariffs delayed the initial preorder, then all the major retailers' websites crashed (shocker) once preorders opened. Even if you did manage to secure a preorder, there's a good chance it was canceled with no explanation. Demand is high, and it seems that many retailers may have oversold their stock and then were forced to backtrack. So, how the heck can you get your hands on the Nintendo Switch 2? Try heading to a local chain retailer like the good old days.

Here's where you can buy the Nintendo Switch 2 in person on launch day (June 5). We recommend arriving early and bringing a camping chair (at the very least).

Best Buy

Opening time: 12:01 a.m. ET

Most Best Buy stores will have a limited stock of consoles available for in-person purchase, starting at midnight ET on June 5. Stores will be open for two hours and will be giving away a limited-edition collectible coin. Check out the retailer's Switch 2 landing page to see if your local store is participating in the late-night launch.

Target

Opening time: 8:00 a.m. local time

Rather than doing a late-night event, Target stores will open at their usual time on June 5 (typically 8 a.m.). Switch 2 hopefuls can line up as early as they please "in the designated queuing location" near the store entrance. Target employees will hand out a limited number of reservation tickets to the first in line, so be sure to get there well before the store opens. If you're lucky enough to receive a reservation ticket, you'll be directed to the electronics department once it opens, where you'll be able to purchase one Switch 2 or Switch 2 bundle. For more information, check out Target's press release.

Staples

Opening time: 8:00 a.m. local time

Select Staples stores will have the Switch 2 and an unspecified Switch game bundle on a first-come, first-served basis starting on June 5. Most locations open at 8:00 a.m. and there's a limit of one console per customer. See the Staples Switch 2 landing page for participating retailers.

SEE ALSO: 10 Nintendo Switch 2 launch titles I can't wait to play (besides 'Mario Kart World') GameStop

Opening time: 3:00 p.m. local time (June 4)

Head to your local GameStop location for a midnight launch party of the Nintendo Switch 2. The event starts at 3 p.m. local time on June 4, so be sure to plan accordingly. Some store locations will be giving away a free can of Red Bull to GameStop Pro members. Head to the GameStop events page for participating retailers.

Sam's Club

Opening time: 10:00 a.m. local time

The Walmart-owned warehouse club will have limited Nintendo Switch 2 Mario Kart World Bundles available on June 5. You must be a Sam's Club member to purchase, and stock is first-come, first-served. Not a member? There's still time to sign up and get 50% off your first year.

Costco

Opening time: 10:00 a.m. local time

Similar to Sam's Club, Costco will have the Nintendo Switch 2 Mario Kart Bundle with a 12-month Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership available on June 5 for Costco members only on a first-come, first-served basis. The retailer will also have the Switch 2 Pro controller on launch day.

Walmart

Opening time: 12:00 a.m. ET for Supercenters across PST/MST/Hawaii/Alaska, 6:00 a.m. ET for CT/ET

Walmart said in an Instagram post that it will have consoles for purchase at midnight ET on June 5 in Supercenters across Pacific, Mountain, Hawaii, and Alaska regions of the U.S. and at 6:00 a.m. local time for stores in Central and Eastern regions. However, stock is limited and inventory will vary by location.

Wherever you decide to go, be sure to check in with the store ahead of time to ensure it has Switch 2s in stock and to see what time you can start lining up. Be prepared to arrive early and wait in line if you don't have a preorder. It'll be like waiting in line to buy concert tickets in the ’90s, aka the good old days. Just remember that stocks are very limited, so don't get your hopes too high. If you're 100th in line, you might want to check a different retailer.

The Dimension 20 cast improvises a Dungeons and Dragons character from scratch

Mashable - Wed, 06/04/2025 - 11:24

The cast of Dimension 20 is already skilled at building their own characters, but what happens when they have to come up with one together?

SEE ALSO: The 'Dimension 20' cast chooses their ultimate Intrepid Heroes squad

That's the challenge Mashable Entertainment Reporter Belen Edwards laid out to Dimension 20: Cloudward, Ho! cast members Brennan Lee Mulligan, Ally Beardsley, Lou Wilson, Siobhan Thompson, and Zac Oyama when they came to the Mashable studio. With a few rolls of the dice, the cast determined their mystery character's class, species, and ability scores. Based on that information alone, they improvised what this new character would look like, how they'd dress, what weapon they'd wield, and more. From there, Mashable Illustrator Ian Moore and Mashable Animator Zain bin Awais brought their creation to life.

Without spoiling anything, let's just say the results of this game are... chaotic. But with the Intrepid Heroes in play, would you expect anything less? Get ready to meet the one and only Treye Snappes.

Watch the full video above to witness Treye in all his glory. (Although really, it's more like mayhem.) Which Dimension 20 campaign do you think he'd fit best in? Could he hang with Fantasy High's Bad Kids or A Starstruck Odyssey's Gunner Channel? Or would he be more of an adversary for the Intrepid Heroes to take down?

Dimension 20: Cloudward, Ho! premieres June 4 at 7 p.m. ET on Dropout, with a new episode every Wednesday.

Murderbots secrets come to light in exclusive clip from Murderbot Season 1, episode 5

Mashable - Wed, 06/04/2025 - 11:00

Things are heating up in Apple TV+'s sci-fi comedy Murderbot.

At the end of episode 4, Murderbot (Alexander Skarsgård) realized that hostile SecUnits from an unknown enemy had hijacked it with a combat override module that would have forced it to kill the PresAux research team. In order to prevent this, it shot itself. But don't worry, Murderbot is still alive and well — OK, maybe just alive.

SEE ALSO: Does the 'Murderbot' cast relate to Murderbot?

In an exclusive clip from the upcoming episode 5, titled "Rogue War Tracker Infinite," Murderbot finds itself under the care of the PresAux team. That includes the ever-suspicious Gurathin (David Dastmalchian), who appears to have had access to Murderbot's internal data while it was unconscious from its injury. Could he have discovered that Murderbot has hacked its governor module?

He's certainly discovered one of Murderbot's other secrets: its obsession with the space soap opera The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon. In the clip above, PresAux's Ratthi (Akshay Khanna) tests Murderbot on its knowledge of the show's deepest cuts, much to Gurathin's disdain. (He thinks the show is "crap," but it might not be a good idea to say that in front of Murderbot.)

With their new knowledge of Murderbot's binging habits, how long will it take for PresAux to learn the rest of Murderbot's secrets?

Murderbot is now streaming on Apple TV+, with new episodes every Friday.

Mashable - Wed, 06/04/2025 - 10:46

In just over a month, Marvel's First Family will be back on the big screen in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

Directed by Matt Shakman (WandaVision), The Fantastic Four: First Steps stars Pedro Pascal as the super-stretchy Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as the forcefield-wielding Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as the super strong Ben Grimm/The Thing, and Joseph Quinn as literal hothead Johnny Storm/The Human Torch.

A new trailer for The Fantastic Four: First Steps highlights the Fantastic Four's superpowers in all their glory, but the real focus here is on this iconic quartet as a family unit. The trailer showcases familial teasing between characters like Reed and Johnny, as well as a new look at Reed and Sue's baby Franklin.

Also present are flashes of The Fantastic Four: First Steps' dual bad guys: Silver Surfer (Julia Garner) and the planet-eating Galactus (Ralph Ineson). He's marked Earth as the next dish in his interplanetary buffet, and it's up to the Fantastic Four to save the world — as a family.

If these stakes have you worried about the Fantastic Four's survival, don't be too alarmed (yet). All four members of the main cast are slated to star in Avengers: Doomsday. Plus, the end-credits scene of Thunderbolts* teased their arrival in the MCU from another dimension. Now, the biggest question The Fantastic Four: First Steps needs to answer is what led these heroes to leave their dimension in the first place.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps hits theaters July 25.

They're also lightweight and cozy, plus offer multipoint connection, hands-free calling, and customizable sound quality and profiles on the app. You can pick a preset to match the genre you're listening to, or create your own from scratch.

Obviously the sound quality won't be on par with the WH-1000XM6 headphones, but the WH-CH520s are still from Sony. And if we know anything about Sony, it's that their audio products won't disappoint. To be honest, at only $38, it's hard to have any complaints.

Uber launches new experience for seniors, including Simple Mode and Medicare payments

Mashable - Wed, 06/04/2025 - 09:00

Uber is rolling out an update for senior riders this week, offering a more accessible ride share experience for individuals and families.

Part of Uber's Family profile, the new Senior Accounts can be connected to other riders' accounts for additional safety and payment features. Connected family members can book rides and change account settings on behalf of the rider, and contact the driver while a ride is underway.

SEE ALSO: Digital detox for the next generation, from pouches to phone-free proms

The app will get a smart redesign, too: Riders with Senior Accounts will see larger text, fewer buttons and ride options, and easy-to-follow prompts on screens, the company explained, and family members can track rides in real time. Called Simple Mode, the app experience can be turned on even without adding a Senior Account to a family profile, directly in the user's settings.

"Senior accounts and Simple mode represent an important milestone in Uber’s ongoing commitment to accessible transportation,” said Ashu Manohar, director of product management at Uber. “These features reflect our dedication to designing technology that meets people where they are and supports mobility at every stage of life.”

Uber is also adding more payment options to Senior Accounts, including the option to pay with a connected family member’s card or Medicare Flex cards, prepaid debit cards offered under the Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan.

The company's new Senior Accounts are the latest in a series of new upgrades to the company's fleet of drivers, including a recent pilot with the U.S. Army and an expansion of its autonomous vehicle partnership with Waymo.

In May, Uber competitor Lyft launched Lyft Silver, a similar simplified app experience for older riders featuring enlarged text, streamlined ride options, and 24/7 live phone support. Lyft Silver can be added to family accounts and joint wallets, as well as the courtesy ride program Lyft Concierge, which lets others schedule rides on behalf of the rider.

Theres no better emotional support water bottle than Owalas FreeSip

Mashable - Wed, 06/04/2025 - 07:00

I've cycled through my fair share of water bottles in my life. I've done the Nalgenes, Sips, and HydroFlasks. I've tried all the different materials, too: plastic, metal, and glass. Just through trying to cut my single-use plastics for a more sustainable lifestyle, I've ended up with a whole slew of water bottles on my hunt to find The One. But ultimately, a reusable water bottle is about cutting waste, so buying up a bunch of different ones defeats the purpose. That's why I'm ready to tell you about the water bottle to end all water bottles: the Owala FreeSip.

The first time I ever came across the Owala FreeSip was, of course, on TikTok. A user posted a video with its exciting feature, the ability to both sip water through the built-in straw or chug through a spout. I go full Goldilocks when it comes to water bottles, so this certainly piqued my interest as I've never been able to find a water bottle that has a straw but also a cover or a mouth opening that's narrow enough so I'm not spilling all over myself.

After several weeks of mulling it over, asking myself Do I really need a new water bottle? I finally settled on a color combo and hit checkout. Now, after several years with the water bottle, I can safely say it was the best $40 I've ever spent. The Owala FreeSip lives up to its promise of both a sippable and chuggable water bottle. The best part to me is that, unlike other bottles with a straw that I've used, the FreeSip has a cover for the spout. That way, when you're out and about in the world, it's safe from germs and bacteria.

The FreeSip's insulation really is impeccable, offering 24 hours of cold. I've filled mine up with ice and water to come back a day later and still find the jingle of full ice cubes. Plus, the two-part locking lid can also double as a loop for easy carrying. Cleaning is also easy with the FreeSip. The top part's components (lid and straw) are dishwasher safe, while the body is hand-wash recommended. Full transparency though — I've put the full Owala in the dishwasher for years, and while its insulation has weakened, it's not by much.

The FreeSip water bottle comes in three different sizes: 24 ounces, 32 ounces, and 40 ounces. Fair warning, the 40-ounce water bottle, which I have, is giant. Neither the 32- nor 40-ounce options fit in cup holders, which is a real pain. If you are looking for a more travel-friendly option, the 24-ounce size will fit.

Since the FreeSip first launched, Owala has expanded its lineup to tumblers and other styles of bottles. I recently added another FreeSip, the Twist, to my collection as a travel option. Its skinnier design fits in both cup holders and backpack side pockets, which my 40-ounce FreeSip can't. Plus, the classic FreeSip is not exactly airplane-friendly. The lid builds up pressure, which results in a small in-flight water burst when you go to open it. Luckily, the Twist does not suffer from this problem, as I used it on a recent flight and didn't encounter this issue.

Just by looking at my Owala you can tell it is well-loved. It's my go-to recommendation when folks are in need of a new water bottle, and I'm known to gift it to my loved ones. It's the best water bottle I've ever used, and worth its viral hype.
