Microsoft asks: What if Windows could update all your software at once?

Mashable - 7 hours 19 min ago

Microsoft's Windows could soon update all your software at once.

The company announced in a blog post this week that developers and product teams could join a private preview of its "Windows Update orchestration platform."

Microsoft wrote:

"Updates across the Windows ecosystem can feel like a fragmented experience. To solve this, we're building a vision for a unified, intelligent update orchestration platform capable of supporting any update (apps, drivers, etc.) to be orchestrated alongside Windows updates."

The idea is that the orchestration platform will scan for pending updates to your Windows PC's apps and software. Then, Windows would schedule downloads and updates for the optimal time to limit bandwidth spikes and increase eco-efficiency. Right now, however, this is available only to developers and product teams that join the private preview.

This comes as a welcome bit of news to folks out there — perhaps the author of this article — who often forget to download updates and delay the task indefinitely. It would be nice to have that whole hassle done automatically.

Amazons best Dyson Memorial Day deal is still live: Get a Dyson V8 Plus stick vacuum for under $350

Mashable - 7 hours 27 min ago

Unlike your science teacher from high school, Amazon doesn't always mind if you're a bit late. During the retailer's major sales like Prime Day or the recent Memorial Day sale event, Amazon tends to keep some of the best sales around for a few days after the official event is over. That means if you were out of town over the long Memorial Day weekend, there's still a great deal in store at Amazon for anyone who has a floor that needs cleaning.

As of May 26, the Dyson V8 Plus cordless stick vacuum is still at its Memorial Day sale price of $349.99, marked down from the list price of $469.99. That takes $120 off the normal price for a sweet 26% discount.

SEE ALSO: I tried the $2,600 robot vacuum with a mechanical crane arm, and it's absurd

If you hate lugging out the vacuum to clean a single rug, you need a lightweight Dyson stick vacuum. With 40 minutes of runtime, the V8 Plus is a great model. Without a cord, you're free to grab the vacuum off the convenient wall mount and head into a single room for a quick clean. Or use it on the entire hour and all floor types thanks to its Motorbar cleaning head that detangles for you.

The Dyson V8 Plus has the ability to clean in two modes: a powerful mode for everyday cleaning or a MAX setting for spots that need a deeper cleaning. Plus, it can convert into a handheld model which is ideal for cleaning out the car, getting pet hair off upholstery, or for tackling the stairs.

Once you've vacuumed the whole house, use the one-touch emptying control to rid the vacuum's bin of dust and debris. The slim wall mount is perfect for storing and recharging the vacuum so it's ready to clean up tomorrow's mess.

Instead of struggling with a heavy vacuum or one with a cord, upgrade to the Dyson V8 Plus while it's still on sale at Amazon for $349.99, or 26% off the normal price of $469.99. Since this is a leftover Memorial Day deal, it could disappear at any time.

We cant believe this Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite deal is still hanging around

If an affordable tablet is on your shopping list, you can still get the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite for a steal at Amazon. TBH, we're surprised it hasn't sold out yet.

As of May 28, the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite with 64GB of storage and WiFi connectivity is still on sale for only $199.99. That's nearly 40% off its original retail price of $329.99. Amazon's current list price is actually selling it short. That's also only a couple cents away from its best price on record.

SEE ALSO: Score the PlayStation DualSense Edge at its lowest price ever at Amazon

The 2024 Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite is an Amazon-exclusive upgrade from the previous S6 Lite. It packs an updated Exynos processor and comes with Android 14 out of the box, but is otherwise largely unchanged. We were big fans of its predecessor — particularly the impressive display, Dolby Atmos stereo speakers, the convenience of the S Pen stylus, and the quick ability to switch from kids mode to parent mode with a PIN — so we expect this newer version is even better. It's also lightweight (just over a pound), features a 10.4-inch screen, and can last up to 14 hours per charge.

It's not meant to wow you like the Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra. Instead, it's meant to bridge the gap between your phone screen and a hefty laptop. And for that, it gets the job done and then some. Plus, it'll cost you less than $200.

Karate Kid: Legends review: Ben Wang kicks butt in crowd-pleasing sequel

Mashable - 8 hours 50 min ago

It's easy to be cynical about sequels when Hollywood's cinematic landscape is littered with bad examples. But then a sequel comes along that's so good, it'll knock you out.

Karate Kid: Legends is a sensational sequel, building on the classic underdog framework of the original 1984 Karate Kid movie, while working in fresh fun, familiar faces, and a dazzling new talent.

Directed by Jonathan Entwistle, Karate Kid: Legends unites the original trilogy's Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) with the 2010 Karate Kid's martial arts master Mr. Han (Jackie Chan). Together, they train a new "karate kid" to best a ruthless bully. But the best bits of this high-kicking sequel are actually when this new kid, Li Fong (played by the dynamic Ben Wang), is carving out his own story in New York City.

Karate Kid: Legends brings a rumble to the Bronx (and Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Staten Island).  Credit: Jonathan Wenk / Sony Pictures

At the start of Karate Kid: Legends, Li lives in Beijing with his single mom (Ming-Na Wen), who really wishes he'd stop sneaking off to train kung-fu with Mr. Han. After a family tragedy, all she wants for her son is a fresh start and "no fighting!" So, she moves them to New York City, where the streets are bustling, and the pizza joint owners will mock you for asking for "stuffed crust."

Despite this embarrassing faux pas, fish-out-of-water Li makes his first friends at Victory Pizza. The shop owner's daughter, Mia Lipani (Sadie Stanley), is welcoming and adventurous, offering to show Li around the neighborhood on the back of her motorized scooter. His crush on her is instantaneous and understandable, as their montage of zipping around lower Manhattan plays with the excitement and freedom of young love.

Li doesn't hit it off as fast with Mia's dad, shop owner/retired boxer Victor Lipani (Joshua Jackson with a New York accent as thick as a grandma slice). But the two find a common interest in sport fighting and a common enemy in the karate school nearby.

While the owner of the dojo is a vicious loan shark out to cripple Victor and/or his business, the school's prize student, Connor Day (Aramis Knight), is a bully who harasses both Mia and Li. Naturally, there's only one way to save the shop and his friends, and that's for Ben to go against his mother's wishes and fight to win the Five Boroughs Tournament. This karate competition leaps to the outer boroughs for the early rounds, with a climactic skyscraper-top fight as the final showdown that awards honor and riches to the winner.

Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan return to Karate Kid franchise with enthusiasm. Credit: Jonathan Wenk / Sony Pictures

The script by Rob Lieber ties together Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Han's stories with a history that unites their houses of martial arts training. Sure, one mastered karate and the other kung fu, but they are "two branches, one tree."

So, even though these masters have never met, when Han's dear kung fu student Li needs help to train in karate for the Five Boroughs Tournament, San Fernando Valley-based Daniel LaRusso cannot refuse. Both of these actors carry themselves with an enchanting ease befitting a master. They've also perfected a breezy comedic style that plays out in winking lines and precisely delivered punches, which plays well in the training sequences.

Props to Entwistle and his stunt team. The training scenes once involved painting fences, practicing balance on a post, and catching flies with chopsticks. Here, they involve Li being simultaneously (but lovingly) pummeled by both masters as they quibble over which martial arts form is superior. The energy is bouncy and hilarious, like Jackie Chan's '90s action movies.

Wang carries on Chan's legacy by performing action skillfully while being funny. He can best many a rampaging rando, but his face makes clear he's not thrilled about the need to! His face expressing exasperation, shock, and even annoyance makes these scenes play as comic fun, rather than frighteningly tense.

Ben Wang is a marvel.  Credit: Jonathan Wenk. / Sony Pictures

Making the leap from the lead in Disney+'s American Born Chinese to Karate Kid: Legends, Wang has to deal not only with balancing teen drama with fight choreography, but also standing up to iconic martial arts movie stars, all while making a karate kid his own. He does all of this with an astonishing ease.

While Li is emotionally guarded, Wang is never wooden or stiff. He offers a nuanced performance of pain and trauma, which grounds the film and allows the moments of exaltation to be all the more contagious. When he gears up to fight a bully, his determination makes our hearts leap up into our throats. When he is getting playfully smacked by Daniel and Mr. Han, he has the comedic timing of Jackie Chan himself. And when he sheepishly flirts or fights with Mia, Wang makes that so believable he leaves his audience blushing in empathy.

Li Fong walks in Daniel LaRusso's footsteps while not being caught in his shadow, and that's because Wang has a mesmerizing screen presence and keen comedic sensibility that makes him addictively watchable.

Lucky for us, he appears later this year in the Stephen King adaptation The Long Walk and has been cast in the prequel The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

Karate Kid: Legends is much more than its cameos. Credit: Jonathan Wenk / Sony Pictures

While Chan and Macchio are terrific together at scratching that nostalgia itch, it's Wang and his New York ensemble that really makes Legends shine. He and Stanley have great chemistry, even as they play it old-school in romance, creeping toward the first kiss for most of the movie. Knight is a seething bully, the kind you love to hate. Playing a bookish tutor who becomes a devoted (and delightfully awkward) friend to Li, It's Wyatt Oleff proves a hilarious wingman with over-earnest compliments and an off-key serenade of the Backstreet Boys. But best of this supporting bunch is Joshua Jackson.

Sure, part of it is the dizzying juxtaposition of The Mighty Ducks star popping up in a Karate Kid movie. However, Jackson digs in to the story of the boxer turned pizza parlor proprietor with charming earnestness. His tough guy demeanor is initially gruff, but soon gives way to a heart-of-gold sense of good neighborliness that's been a part of this franchise since Mr. Miyagi first fixed Daniel's bike. While the budding romance between Li and Mia is sweet, there's a profound joy in watching Victor develop a brotherly bond with a boy who really needs it.

Altogether, this incredible cast builds a movie that is alive with laughter, excitement, and love. The fight scenes are thrilling, thanks to Wang's terrific physical performance and sound effects that make hard blows really crack. But like the best of this franchise, it's always the heart in its story that hits the hardest.

A confession: I went into this movie expecting a half-hearted, recooked remake of the original film. While Karate Kid: Legends has similar DNA, it stands on its own as a family-friendly film absolutely worth seeing in theaters.

Heartwarming, exciting, and surprising, Karate Kid: Legends had me laughing, gasping, tearing up, and cheering. Don't mistake it for just another sequel. See it in theaters, and take the kids.

Karate Kid: Legends opens in theaters May 30.

WhatsApps iPad app is here, and its exactly what youd expect

Mashable - 10 hours 1 min ago

WhatsApp wasn't kidding with that teaser yesterday — a dedicated iPad app for Meta's social networking platform followed just hours later.

This has been a long time coming — WhatsApp has been around for 15 years, and it's never had a standalone iPad app. So now that it's here, is it any good? We investigate.

SEE ALSO: WhatsApp, Signal scam leads to Microsoft account hacks. How to spot it. WhatsApp iPad app: Who's this thing for?

I never really understood Meta's timidness about making the app for the world's most popular tablet. My logic is simple: If you're an iPad user, and you're a WhatsApp user, sometimes you'll be doing things on your iPad and you'll want to open up WhatsApp and do things there, and you'll want the experience to be as smooth as possible. Given how huge Meta and WhatsApp are, a lot of people expect an iPad app to exist, and they expect it to be good.

It only took you 15 years, guys. Credit: Meta

In this particular case, it means you'll want the WhatsApp iPad app to be pretty much the same as on your iPhone, only nicer to look at, and perhaps with some added features that take advantage of the iPad's large display.

Yes, you can always fire up a browser window on your iPad and log into WhatsApp's web version, but it just isn't as good as the standalone app.

WhatsApp iPad app: Better than messaging on your phone

The WhatsApp app on the iPad has a very similar layout as on my phone, with the bottom menu consisting of Updates, Calls, Communities, Chats, and Settings being exactly the same.

I've tried WhatsApp out on a 13-inch iPad Air, and the big display does make a difference. These days, my family, friends, and the communities I follow send a lot of photos and videos on WhatsApp, and seeing them on a crisp, 13-inch display is pretty great — though the bigger canvas does reveal how small and pixelated some of the shared memes really are.

Looks like Meta's Llama AI is up to speed. Credit: Stan Schroeder/Mashable

Perhaps the best feature is the two-column view, which lets you see your chats on the left, and the content of a selected chat on the right. On the phone, you have to choose between one or the other, even when you flip the phone into landscape mode.

WhatsApp iPad app: Anything else?

Not in the way of any specific new features within the app. But the iPad itself allows for some cool ways to use WhatsApp. For example, the WhatsApp app supports Stage Manager, Slide Over, and Split View, and having both WhatsApp and Slack (my two main messaging apps) open side-by-side is pretty great. Apple's Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil are also supported.

It's also worth noting that on the WhatsApp app for iPad, you can join audio and video calls (with up to 32 people), which isn't possible on the web version of WhatsApp. And when it comes to video calls with lots of participants, your eyes will thank you if you're doing it on your iPad instead of the phone.

Finally, all of your chats will be synced between all of your devices, including the iPad, the iPhone, and Mac.

WhatsApp iPad app: Availability

The WhatsApp iPad app is a free download on Apple's App Store, but you do need to have iPadOS 15.1 or later installed to run it.

OpenAI explores sign in with ChatGPT for other apps

Mashable - 12 hours 34 min ago

You may soon be able to sign in to third party apps using ChatGPT — but it probably won't be for a while yet.

OpenAI recently shared a "Sign in with ChatGPT" interest form on its website, targeting developers who may be interested in the capability.

"OpenAI is exploring ways for users to sign into third-party apps using their ChatGPT accounts," reads the page. "We’re looking for developers interested in integrating this capability into their own apps."

A preview of the experience is linked, along with a short form for interested developers to fill out.

All of which is to say that this thing is clearly still in its early stages. Before you start seeing any sign in options on third party apps, OpenAI still needs to go through the responses, liaise with developers, and then work to get the option live.

The company has been expanding into other areas recently. OpenAI recently launched experimental shopping features, and there are reports that it's working on a social network for ChatGPT.

Adults review: More than just Gen Z Friends

Mashable - 12 hours 50 min ago

FX's newest comedy offering may be called Adults, but the characters at the center of the show are still trying to figure out what, exactly, being an adult means. How do you repair a boiler? Or navigate a hospital bill? Or even land a job? Adults' ensemble would love to know.

Like the many hangout sitcoms that have come before it — think Seinfeld or Living Single Adults examines the day-to-day lives and challenges of a tight-knit friend group. Here, however, creators Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw (The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon) filter familiar beats of friend drama and romantic woes through a Gen Z lens. The result is more Broad City than Friends — although comparisons to both are apt — with Kronengold and Shaw delivering a heightened look at early adulthood that's chaotic, heartfelt, and current.

Adults introduces an instantly lovable television friend group in its five lead twentysomethings, each of whom come with a host of relatable worries. The whole crew crashes at Samir's (Malik Elassal) parents' house. In theory, that gives him authority, but Samir's struggles to find work and keep the house in order while his parents are on vacation leave him with major anxiety about the future.

Joining Samir is his childhood bestie Billie (Lucy Freyer), whose career-driven dreams have stalled, leaving her wondering whether she peaked in high school. Meanwhile, the eternally charismatic Anton (Owen Thiele) struggles with personal boundaries, somehow managing to become everyone’s friend — even a local stabber. Rounding out the group is the unapologetically brash Issa (Amita Rao), who worries that her status as the resident "wild card" leads her friends to not take her seriously, along with her boyfriend Paul (Jack Innanen), a "sexually fluid delight" who brings a charming go-with-the-flow vibe to the household.

SEE ALSO: From a thrift store meltdown to TV stardom, Jack Innanen turns chaos into comedy

Together, these five will weather the storm of their twenties, from ill-advised hookups to the nerves that come with hosting your first "grown-up" dinner party. The cast of young comedians gels instantly, establishing the kind of natural chemistry that is able to propel any show from good to great (or in this case, from great to must-watch). It helps that the roommate conceit of Adults naturally intensifies the ensemble's intimacy — if you don’t already buy that the characters are friends, wait until you see them all cram into a bathroom together as if it’s the most natural thing in the world.

Amid its more raunchy chaos, Adults also tries its hand at tackling more serious subject matter, like panic about health insurance or harassment in the workplace. Thankfully, the series never gets preachy, instead finding humor in its leads' wild reactions to these topics. ("How can I make this about me?" is a common thread throughout Adults, leading to cringe-worthy situations that left me both howling with laughter and hiding my face in my hands.)

On top of addressing these thornier topics, Adults also places major emphasis on the role technology plays in its characters' lives. After all, you can't make a show about young adults in 2025 without incorporates tech in some way. Here, that manifests in plots involving tracking friends with AirTags or parsing a long list of vaguely named phone contacts. None of these references come across as forced — in fact, Adults' treatment of tech as an everyday facet of life feels fresh and relevant, helping distinguish it from its older hangout sitcom predecessors.

Of course, there are also elements of Adults that will feel familiar to any hangout sitcom lover, like longstanding friend group traditions, or hints at a romance within the group. Guest stars abound too, like a cameo from Julia Fox, or Charlie Cox (Daredevil: Born Again) showcasing his comedy chops as an English teacher on a downward spiral.

Still, it's Adults' main ensemble that proves to be the major draw here, with Kronengold, Shaw, and the show’s leads creating a friend group that’s codependent and flawed to the extreme, yet relatable and sweet in their support for one another. These five may not be the most sure of their directions in life, but even in its early episodes, Adults knows exactly where it's going, and it relishes the chaos and growing pains it takes to get there.

All episodes of Adults are now streaming on Hulu.
