There has been a lot of hype around Moltbook, the Reddit-like social media platform for AI bots where humans aren’t allowed to post. But how, exactly, does it work? Should we worry about agentic AI taking over the world, or should we worry about our data?
In this video, Mashable producer Teodosia Dobriyanova spoke to AI ethicist Catharina Doria who talked us through the latest AI hype, the importance of AI governance and data protection, and why she believes the internet is going to move on from AI-generated content into something way more human.
If you're unsure about the latter, just look at 2026 social media trends. Instead of AI content, there is a return to analogue, to offline activities, and mundane realism in most aspects of life — offline dating, tactile experiences, or the resurgence of early 2000s tech.

Winning your first individual Olympic medal is a moment worth celebrating. It's a colossal achievement beyond most people's wildest dreams. It is not, however, an opportunity to confess to cheating on someone and attempt to win them back in front of the entire world.
On Tuesday, Sturla Holm Lægreid won his first individual Olympic medal in the 20-kilometre individual biathlon in the Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina.
Shortly after winning, Lægreid gave an interview to Norwegian broadcaster NRK, divulging that he had been unfaithful to his now ex-girlfriend and that he had told her one week ago. The confession exploded on social media and even the most cursory glances at the comments reveal that the internet is almost unanimously not on his side.
SEE ALSO: Cheating has become the ultimate crime online"Six months ago I met the love of my life — the most beautiful and kindest person in the world. Three months ago I made my biggest mistake and cheated on her," Lægreid said, breaking down mid-confession.
"I had the gold medal in life, and I am sure there are many people who will see things differently, but I only have eyes for her," he continued. "Sport has come second these last few days. Yes, I wish I could share this with her."
Why share this very private information with the world, you may well be wondering? Lægreid later elaborated on his reasons for doing so in an interview with Norwegian newspaper VG.
"My only way to solve it is to tell everything and put everything on the table, and hope that she can still love me," he said.
"I've done that for her, and now for the whole world. I have nothing to lose," he added. "I want to be a good role model, but I have to admit when I make mistakes."
Lægreid didn't stop talking, though. In yet another interview, he said he had not received a response from his ex-girlfriend. "I haven't got any reactions from the girl that I mentioned," he said during an Olympic press conference. "I'm happy because maybe she hasn't seen it, maybe she will see it at the right time. I hope I don't make anything worse for her."
"I hope there's a happy ending in the end," he said.
Firstly, she has almost certainly seen it. Secondly, there's a high risk that going public in this way will make the situation worse for her. Thirdly, expressing the hope of a "happy ending" now puts additional pressure on his ex. And commenters are commenting.
"This is emotional manipulation packaged as a grand gesture," reads one comment on the BBC Sport Instagram Reel of Lægreid's follow-up interview. "The happy end is: she won't forgive him!" declares one comment on the same post, which received over 15K likes. "If guilttripping were olympic, he'd win gold," writes another commenter.
TikTokkers have started posting. Podcasters too.
"It's hard to forgive. Even after a declaration of love in front of the whole world. I did not choose to be put in this position, and it hurts to have to be in it."The problem with televised declarations of remorse is that they expose the wronged party to the court of public opinion, a court that has already delivered its verdict. And yeah, it's not looking good for Lægreid.
By opening this story up to the press and social media, Laegreid has invited further attention to the already painful situation. VG, for one press outlet, said it "has been in contact with Holm Lægreid's former girlfriend. She wishes to remain anonymous in this matter, a request VG has accepted as she has not sought publicity regarding a private matter." VG later reported that Lægreid's former girlfriend had provided a written statement: "It's hard to forgive. Even after a declaration of love in front of the whole world. I did not choose to be put in this position, and it hurts to have to be in it," she wrote. "We have had contact and he is aware of my opinions on this." When asked by VG, Lægreid declined to comment on her response.
Featured Video For YouPerhaps Lægreid thought this would come off as a romantic gesture to grovel for forgiveness at the expense of his own reputation. For all we know, he may have exhausted all other private options for communicating his remorse. I've heard tales of guys who've been blocked by all means of communication, so they resort to trying to contact their exes on Vinted or via transferring small sums of money (we're talking pennies) over bank transfer along with the word "sorry" as the payment reference. These acts of desperation are almost always unwanted. And in many cases, they are intrusive and manipulative.
This private pain has now been turned into public internet fodder. But, what about the woman who might be sitting at home nursing a broken heart, who now has to deal with the additional pressure to react, respond, or even acknowledge his apology?
If this woman were to take him back, she would also face the judgement of large swaths of the internet which is currently imploring her to not give him another chance. Conversely, she may also be judged if she chooses not to respond further. You're damned if you do and damned if you don't. Whether he wanted to or not, Lægreid may have added to this woman's pain and has placed her in a difficult, public position.
It's only been a week since she learned of his betrayal and this woman could still be processing hurt feelings. Even if she were to take him back — heavy emphasis on the 'if' here — it would probably take a hell of a lot longer than one week for her to reach a point of even considering that.
Let the record state: it is perfectly acceptable — and dare-I-say advisable — to ignore this gesture. We all make mistakes in life and some of those inflict real emotional pain on people. But these are sensitive conversations which should happen in private, behind closed doors. You can't force someone to forgive you. Send her an email instead. And if she doesn't respond, you need to respect that silence.
Lægreid later released a statement expressing regret for his confession:
"I deeply regret that I brought up this personal story on what was a festive day for Norwegian biathlon. I am not quite myself today, and I am not thinking clearly," he wrote in a statement published by VG.
"My apologies go to Johan-Olav, who deserved all the attention after the gold. It also goes to my ex-girlfriend, who involuntarily ended up in the media spotlight, I hope she is doing well. I can't change this, but I will now put this behind me and focus on the Olympics. I will not answer any further questions about this."
I hope that this woman has turned off her phone and gone to a spa with some supportive friends. It's time to log off.

Domestic football in Europe is turning its attention towards cup competitions this week. We've got some huge FA Cup games on the schedule this weekend, but before that, the Copa del Rey and DFB-Pokal are showcasing some massive matchups. This lineup of games includes Bayern Munich vs. RB Leipzig.
Bayern Munich have a decent lead at the top of the Bundesliga standings, but they've shown some signs of weakness lately. Still, they go into almost every game as favorites. The most controversial one? A caller who dares to suggest kangaroos are a pointless animal — an opinion which Robbie rightly corrects.

There have already been numerous, disturbing mentions of Trump's name in the Epstein files, and the unredacted versions are reportedly even worse.
Certain members of Congress have now been given permission to review the Justice Department's now-unredacted files concerning the convicted child sex offender. One lawmaker is Rep. Jamie Raskin, who made a fairly grim claim about the number of times the president's name allegedly pops up.
"According to one of the Congressmen who just reviewed the unredacted files, Jamie Raskin, says he did a search, he said Donald Trump's name appears more than a million times," says Jimmy Kimmel in the clip above. "Which is a lot. There's only three million pages in the whole...that's more than Harry Potter gets mentioned in seven Harry Potter books."
Elsewhere, Jordan Klepper had something similar to say about it on The Daily Show.

U.S. lawmakers have reviewed unredacted versions of the Justice Department's files on convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and while Donald Trump's name has already appeared in the Epstein files, the actual mention count is reportedly...a lot more. Rep. Jamie Raskin told Axios he searched the president's name in the newly unredacted files, and said it came up "more than a million times."
The Daily Show host Jordan Klepper host reacted to Raskin's claim during Tuesday night's show.
"Holy shit, a million times!? There's not even that many references to Hamlet in the play Hamlet," Klepper said.
"Now, maybe Raskin is just being hyperbolic, but if this is true, wouldn't it just be easier to call this the Trump files featuring Jeffrey Epstein?" he continued. "Just think about the effort it took Trump's Justice Department to redact his name that many times. It's like trying to remove the pee from the water park. At this point, you just need to accept that it's in there and try not to think about it."

Put simply, the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 is a lightweight laptop boasting stellar battery life, impressive performance, and a fanless design that borderline rivals that of the MacBook Air. Especially for commuters, this is a Chromebook you’ll want to keep on your short list.
Diving deeper into the details, this laptop wowed me with features I didn’t think I’d ever see grace a Chromebook. Its built-in webcam is so sharp, I had to do a double-take when I saw my selfie. With its fanless design, it produces zero noise — and somehow, it doesn’t get hot. Then, it comes equipped with an OLED display. Yes, you heard that right. An OLED display on a Chromebook. And the colors on it look just as vibrant and punchy as I could’ve hoped.
As outstanding as some of these Chromebook features are, this little laptop isn’t without flaws. I was disappointed by its lackluster speaker quality for music, its outdated 60Hz refresh rate, and frankly, its high price tag.
When this laptop is on sale, it could be one of the best Chromebooks we’ve reviewed so far. When it’s not, it might be worth checking out the best laptops we’ve tested under $500 to find a better value.
The Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 has plenty of great features, earning it a Mashable Choice Award. Credit: Sarah Chaney / Mashable Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 price and specsGenerally speaking, most Chromebooks are cheaper than the average laptop. The Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 is cheap for a laptop, but for a Chromebook, it’s one of the most expensive I’ve seen in recent years.
Our Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 review unit is $749.99 via Best Buy and comes with the following specs:
MediaTek Kompanio Ultra 910
Integrated Arm Immortalis-G925 graphics
16GB RAM
256GB of UFS storage
14-inch FHD+ (1920 x 1200) OLED touch display
This configuration is also available for $749.99 at Lenovo, where you can find a slightly cheaper configuration as well. For $649.99, the Chromebook Plus 14 lowers RAM from 16GB to 12GB, decreases storage from 256GB to 128GB, and ditches the fingerprint reader and the display’s touch capability, but it keeps the same OLED panel and display resolution, the Kompanio Ultra 910 processor, and the integrated Immortalis-G925 graphics.
A fanless design that excites the ears but not the eyesThe Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 is a well-built laptop with bland looks. It features a silver chassis (officially called seashell) with an aluminum top lid that does a decent, but not perfect, job at resisting fingerprints, and a plastic bottom half that’s a little creaky when pushed, but feels sturdy overall.
It's not a looker by any means. Credit: Sarah Chaney / MashableIt’s certainly not an ugly Chromebook, but it’s not going to win any best-dressed awards either. Though it could be a shoo-in for a few other award categories. Measuring 12.4 x 8.6 x 0.6 inches and weighing just 2.8 pounds, it’s one of the lightest laptops we’ve tested to date. And with a great fanless design, it’s one of the quietest laptops we’ve reviewed.
A gorgeous display with one glaring weaknessLenovo’s Chromebook Plus 14 features a 14-inch FHD+ (1920 x 1200) OLED touch display, which is rare to see on a Chromebook and is most likely the biggest reason for this laptop’s higher price tag.
The picture on this OLED panel is stunning, especially when brightness is maxed out at 400 nits. Taking photos of displays is difficult, but I think the photo I snapped of the abstract painting wallpaper shows off the display’s capability for vibrant, rich colors that aren’t overly saturated. The colors aren’t as vivid as some of the OLED panels I’ve seen on higher-end laptops, but c’mon, this is an OLED display on a $749 Chromebook, and it looks dang good for that price.
The OLED display is pretty spectacular for a $749 Chromebook. Credit: Sarah Chaney / MashableUnfortunately, the beauty of the Chromebook Plus 14’s colorful display is diminished slightly by its 60Hz refresh rate.
Of course, if you only plan to hop on the internet and stream content here and there, this borderline outdated refresh rate probably won’t bug you, and it does play a small role in extending battery life for this lightweight, travel-friendly Chromebook. However, if you want to use a Chromebook for cloud gaming or you want the display to be a bit easier on your eyes long-term, the 60Hz refresh rate may be a dealbreaker.
You may need to rely on wireless peripherals with this laptopChromebooks aren’t necessarily known for being powerful workstations, so the scant ports on the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 didn’t surprise me.
The left side has USB-C and USB-A ports. Credit: Sarah Chaney / Mashable Credit: Sarah Chaney / MashableOn the left side, you’ll find:
USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 port
USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 port
And on the right:
USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 port
Audio jack
This is a decent array of ports, but considering this is a premium Chromebook, it would’ve been nice to see at least one extra port thrown in, like an extra USB-A or -C port, a microSD card reader, or an HDMI port. That said, the laptop does get points for evenly doling out its USB-C ports to the left and right sides, a charging convenience not all modern laptops offer.
The speakers are okay for dialogue, but crummy for musicThe Chromebook Plus 14 is fitted with four 2W speakers and Dolby Atmos audio tech, and I hated listening to music on this laptop. No matter which song I played, the audio was tinny and fatiguing, especially at louder volumes. Around 30 to 40 percent volume, listening to music wasn’t too annoying, but any louder, and my favorite songs were grating to my ears.
SEE ALSO: The 10 best portable Bluetooth speakers take your music to-goWhen watching content, the speakers sounded OK and fairly immersive, so they seem to perform better with speaking frequencies. But if you want to listen to music from this laptop, I’d definitely invest in a pair of the best headphones rather than rely on its built-in speakers.
A fairly enjoyable keyboard and trackpad comboTyping on the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14’s six-row chiclet keyboard is generally a pleasant experience. There’s satisfying feedback and an enjoyable clack with every keypress, and none of the keys feel mushy. I was actually able to type faster on this laptop than my daily driver, right out of the box.
The Quick Insert key is fantastic for accessing your clipboard, adding emoji quickly, inserting photos or other files into emails or documents, and getting help from Google AI with simple tasks. I also love the selection of functions in the top row, including keys for switching desk views, pulling up the accessibility menu, and starting dictation. That said, I did miss the Delete key’s presence as it’s one of my most-used keys.
I enjoyed typing on the Chromebook Plus 14. Credit: Sarah Chaney / MashableThe keyboard is backlit with simple white lights. You can manually adjust the brightness to your preferences, or set the Chromebook to automatically adjust keyboard backlight brightness based on your surroundings.
Moving on to the touchpad, it’s mostly smooth to operate, but with too much pressure or too quick movement, there’s a little stuttering to note. For the most part, it responds quickly and supports gestures accurately, but there were a few moments when the trackpad was slow to respond or required repeated movements before the cursor would go where I wanted it.
I wasn’t expecting this stellar webcamGiven the right lighting, the Chromebook Plus 14’s webcam is surprisingly impressive.
Laptop webcams in general are pretty disappointing, so I wasn’t expecting much from a Chromebook, as they’re cheaper than most laptops. But this laptop’s 5MP RGB camera delivered sharp quality, clearly defining small details like strands of silver hair framing my face, and accurate colors, superbly rendering my complexion, light green eyes, and the red brick wall behind me.
I'm genuinely impressed by this webcam. Credit: Sarah Chaney / MashableFor privacy, there’s a physical shutter you can slide over the webcam when you’re not using it.
Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 benchmarks and performanceThe Chromebook Plus 14 delivers smooth overall performance. After firing up 20 Chrome tabs, the YouTube app, and the Spotify app simultaneously, there was minimal lag when loading new pages, switching apps, or working in cloud-based services like Google Docs and Sheets.
Once I hit 25 open tabs, I noticed a bit of lag when loading new pages, but it only added a few seconds to the load time. For a basic daily task load of answering emails, browsing the web with an average of 10 to 20 tabs open, and using simple apps, this laptop is a great pick.
I was worried this Chromebook’s fanless design might translate to throttled performance, but luckily, that’s not the case. This laptop manages to perform well with zero fans — and therefore zero fan noise — and it only gets a little warm during long periods of use, even when charging.
Like other Chromebook Plus models, this laptop comes with a free year’s worth of Google AI and a slew of built-in AI features to help you summarize text, edit your writing, and more. The ‘Help Me Read’ and ‘Help Me Write’ features work as intended and can definitely help if you have a lot of reading and writing tasks on your plate. That said, some AI features clearly still need a lot of work, like the AI tools in Gallery to remove and expand backgrounds, both of which delivered disappointing results.
We ran Geekbench 6 to measure the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14's overall performance compared to other Chromebooks in a more standardized way. Powered by a MediaTek Kompanio Ultra 910 processor, it earned a multi-core score of 7,680, making it our best-performing Chromebook at the time of testing, with the Acer Chromebook 516 GE (2025) trailing closely behind with a score of 7,660 on the same benchmark.
Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 battery lifeThe Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 lasted a respectable 15 hours and 45 minutes on a full charge during our standard battery test, which involves looping a 1080p video at 50 percent brightness and 50 percent speaker volume.
At the time of testing, the only Chromebook that surpasses this lengthy battery life is the Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 514, which notched 18 hours and 11 minutes on the same battery test. These two Chromebooks share most of the same specs, but the Acer Chromebook has an IPS display, and the Lenovo Chromebook has an OLED display. That display variation is likely the only reason for this slight difference in results.
Is the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 worth it?The Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 has a lot going for it: a battery that lasts nearly 16 hours, a gorgeous OLED display that’s a rarity for Chromebooks, stellar performance despite a quiet, fanless design, a satisfying keyboard, and a webcam that has no business being this good on such an affordable laptop. Plus, it’s stupid lightweight, so it’s a fantastic companion for traveling or commuting.
For all those reasons, I think the Chromebook Plus 14 is definitely worth it for anyone in need of a simple, ChromeOS-powered daily driver for school, work, or personal needs. However, I’d recommend waiting for a sale because its $749 sticker price is too much.
Though Lenovo’s Chromebook Plus 14 is a fantastic laptop for some, I don’t think it’s the best Chromebook for everyone. If you want to use it for cloud gaming, its display being capped at 60Hz will be a major nuisance. If you want to jam out to your favorite songs without headphones, you’ll likely be disappointed by its tinny, fatiguing speakers. And if you have a big collection of wired peripherals you want to use, its minimal port setup might not be the best fit for you.
Otherwise, this is a great little Chromebook for most people, and it’s definitely worth considering.
Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 $749 at Best BuyMy answer ultimately boils down to your operating system preference: Windows or macOS?
As of February 2026, I think the 15-inch Apple MacBook Air (M4) is the best MacBook for most people. It's a sleek-as-ever notebook featuring impressive performance, open-lid support for two external displays, a great 12MP Center Stage camera, and an extremely reasonable starting price of $1,199 (though it's often on sale for much less).
The best Windows laptop for most people is the 13.8-inch Microsoft Surface Laptop 7 with the Snapdragon X Elite chip, a sophisticated and snappy Copilot+ PC boasting a stellar battery life of nearly 23 hours. Note that Microsoft makes an Intel version that may appeal to users wary of Windows on ARM for app compatibility reasons, but it's significantly pricier.
SEE ALSO: The best laptops of CES 2026Need something different? I've selected ten other options that are ideal for strict budgets, ultra-basic workloads, frequent travelers, content creation, PC gaming, and beyond.
A quick note before we get into the full list: Five of my picks received next-gen updates at CES 2026, and while most of their successors don't have official release dates or prices yet, the ongoing memory shortage is expected to make most new laptops more expensive later this year. Because of this, I'd strongly consider buying a last-gen model and springing for a RAM or SSD upgrade if possible. (More on this below.)
If you'd rather roll the dice and see how the latest laptops fare in testing, stay tuned. We'll be putting them through our extensive review process as soon as they start trickling out.
What's newAs of February 2026, I've added one new pick based on my latest round of testing. The MSI Prestige 14 Flip AI+ is now our top work laptop, a new category for this guide.
A note about laptop pricesOver the past 12 months, laptop prices have remained largely reasonable and stable despite a tumultuous economic climate. Last spring's tariff-related price increases wound up being minimal, and we saw affected models go on sale frequently throughout the year. In one impressive anomaly, Apple managed to release faster-than-ever MacBook Airs that were $100 cheaper than their 2024 predecessors, and ever since they turned five months old, they've enjoyed regular $200 discounts at major retailers.
Unfortunately, 2026 is probably going to look a lot different. As Mashable's Alex Perry reported, the global surge of AI data centers has created huge demand for DDR5 RAM and SSDs. Laptop manufacturers who put those same components in their PCs are now facing a shortage, and experts say this could lead to significant laptop price hikes or more limited configuration options. (Read: We might be going back to the days of 8GB RAM in mid-range laptops. It's so over.)
Since most manufacturers have yet to confirm price and availability details for the 2026 models they unveiled at CES, we have yet to see exactly how this RAM famine shakes out in reality. For their part, Windows laptops might be fine in the short term. Intel told Tom's Guide that PC makers have “about nine to 12 months of inventory" in stock as a buffer from the shortage. But what happens if it lasts beyond a year, as one Micron exec predicts?
This is all to say that if you're currently in the market for a new laptop, I'd buy one soon and equip it with as much storage and memory as you can afford. For what it's worth, the last-gen models I currently recommend won't feel outdated for years, and they've all held steady at their current prices so far.
A new Hubble Space Telescope image peels back layers of dust around the Egg Nebula, an astronomical tragedy of a star nearing death, foreshadowing the final act for our own sun.
The Egg Nebula lies about 1,000 light-years away in space in the constellation Cygnus, the Swan. At its center sits a dying star, completely hidden in a thick cocoon of dust. Only narrow beams of light escape through gaps near the poles, casting long shadows and bright streaks that give the nebula its striking, symmetrical look.
The scene stands out because it is the youngest and closest known example of a pre-planetary nebula. This short-lived phase comes just before a star turns into a full planetary nebula, the death throes of a sun-like star. Because this precursor lasts only a few thousand years, astronomers rarely get a nearby example they can examine in detail.
"At this early phase, the nebula shines by reflecting light from its central star, which escapes through a polar 'eye' in the surrounding dust," NASA said. "This light emerges from a dusty disk expelled from the star's surface just a few hundred years ago."
Hubble keeps returning to the Egg Nebula because it changes in ways astronomers can actually track over years and decades. By comparing images taken at different times, scientists can see dust shift, jets stretch, and structures subtly change shapes, helping them test ideas about how stars shed material as they die.
SEE ALSO: NASA's Curiosity rover is doing an incredibly rare experiment on MarsUnlike giant stars that die in one violent explosion, a medium star like the sun is expected to just keep on burning until it exhausts its nuclear fuel. This event forms a so-called "planetary nebula," a confusing misnomer because it's not about planets.
As a sun-like star nears the end, it puffs out into a red giant — up to 1,000 times its original size — eventually engulfing the space around it, including any nearby worlds. As the star eventually releases its outer layers, it withers to its core in what's known as a white dwarf star. At that point, it'll be about the size of Earth.
The Egg Nebula, aka CRL 2688, is not there yet. Unlike many planetary nebulas, it does not glow because its gas has heated up and become energized. Instead, it acts sort of like a cosmic mirror.
Hubble's sharp vision shows what that light reveals. Fast streams of material race away from the star along its poles, carving long lobes through a slower-moving, older shell of shed dust. That outer shell appears as a series of evenly spaced ripples expanding outward in space. The neatness of these rings rules out a single supernova.
Don’t miss out on our latest stories: Add Mashable as a trusted news source in Google.
"The arcs, lobes, and central dust cloud likely stem from a coordinated series of poorly understood sputtering events in the carbon-enriched core of the dying star," NASA said.
The shapes also hint that the star may not be alone. One or more unseen companion stars could orbit within the dusty disk, using gravity to steer the flow of gas and dust into the patterns Hubble sees today.
Early Hubble images of the Egg Nebula mapped its basic shape. Later observations in different wavelengths probed deeper into the dust and revealed expanding arcs and jets. The latest image combines older and newer data to deliver the clearest view yet.
