Apple blocks developer from updating Mac app because its similar to a defunct feature

Sat, 03/28/2026 - 10:18

Mac users mourning the loss of Launchpad have found solace in a few third-party apps that replicate its functionality. However, one popular replacement, AppGrid, is now being blocked by Apple from receiving updates in the App Store.

Why? According to the app's developer, Apple told them it's too similar to Launchpad, which, again, no longer exists on the Mac.

Launchpad was an iPad-like app grid on the Mac, accessible from the dock. Apple released Launchpad alongside Mac OS X Lion in July 2011. When a user clicked Launchpad in the dock, a pop-up filled the screen with all the apps installed on the Mac. Users could curate and order the apps in Launchpad, however they liked.

SEE ALSO: iOS 26.4 available now: All updates, security improvements to know

However, Apple killed off Launchpad with macOS Tahoe, released last September. Launchpad was replaced with a new app called Apps. However, Apps simply lists the Mac's apps in alphabetical order, with no way to sort the app icons. In addition, the search function in Apps is buggy and doesn't always find the app that a user is looking for.

Many Mac users were quite unhappy with Apple removing Launchpad. Third-party developers have since stepped in to replace Launchpad, launching their own apps with their take on the feature.

One of the more popular Launchpad replacements in Apple's official App Store is AppGrid. However, according to its developer, Attila Miklósi, Apple is blocking the app's ability to release new updates in the App Store.

According to Apple's developer guidelines, apps cannot be “confusingly similar to an existing Apple product or interface.” However, Launchpad no longer exists in the latest version of macOS. Apple is essentially blocking developers from creating a feature that no longer exists.

Miklósi says that Apple shared that they would accept updates if AppGrid looked less like Launchpad did when it existed. However, the developer is hesitant to change AppGrid's look, as thousands of users have already paid for the version that looks like it currently does.

While Miklósi has maintained the app with updates through direct downloads on AppGrid's website, the App Store version hasn't been updated since November 2025.

As Miklósi points out, Apple oddly didn't remove the app from the App Store. Users can still buy the Pro version of the app too, giving Apple its percentage of the App Store revenue cut. However, the AppGrid version in the App Store can't be updated there and is essentially in a "zombie state" due to Apple's policies.

My favorite smart glasses are at record prices for the Amazon Spring Sale — prices start at $249

We're halfway through the Amazon Big Spring Sale 2026, and my favorite AR smart glasses from Xreal and TCL are all on sale.

As Mashable's tech editor, I get to test out (and geek out over) a lot of cool gadgets. This year, I've been focused on a lot of virtual reality and augmented reality products, particularly smart glasses.

SEE ALSO: Amazon Big Spring Sale 2026: Live updates on the best deals

I tested a ton of smart glasses at CES 2026, and most recently, I put the new TCL RayNeo Air 4 Pro AR/XR Glasses through their paces. And as I mentioned, these futuristic smart glasses are only $249 during the Amazon spring sale. These glasses were just released in late February, and an on-page coupon lets you take $50 off the retail price of $299.

In my TCL RayNeo Air 4 Pro review, I said that these AR glasses are like an OLED TV you can wear, and they're designed for entertainment and gaming. Wherever you are, they project a 201-inch virtual display into the air. They're the first smart glasses with an HDR display, and they're almost twice as bright as the competition.

While I enjoyed testing (and watching The Lord of the Rings) on the new RayNeo smart glasses, the pair I actually use most often come from Xreal, the market leader in this niche.

Xreal's AR glasses can produce an ultra-wide display that you can anchor in place in your field of view, giving you an extra monitor. I've found they're really useful when working on an airplane or on the go. The Xreal One Pro AR Glasses have way more customization options than the RayNeo and a new AI 3D conversion feature.

Finally, Xreal recently released the Xreal 1S AR Glasses, which offer big upgrades at a lower price. The 1S can project a 500-inch virtual screen. If you want to work, go with the One Pro. If you want to work and watch movies or game, go with the 1S. Both are on sale at record prices.

Bear in mind that smart glasses are still in their infancy as a product category, and even the best AR glasses have some issues. But if you're an early adopter who wants to explore the augmented world, TCL and Xreal are the brands I'd recommend.

Crucially, none of these glasses feature cameras. Smart glasses with cameras have always felt a bit creepy to me, and as Mashable has reported, creeps do seem to love Meta-Ray Ban smart glasses.

Victim of Jeffrey Epstein files class-action lawsuit against Google

Sat, 03/28/2026 - 10:01

There's more legal trouble brewing for Google, as a victim of Jeffrey Epstein has filed a class action suit against the world's largest search engine, alleging its AI Mode improperly published personal information about sex trafficking victims.

The problem began with the Department of Justice, whose rollout of the Epstein files, following the passage of the Epstein Files Transparency Act last year, was riddled with hasty redactions, which often protected the identities of alleged perpetrators while the identities of victims were left unconcealed.

SEE ALSO: Jmail creators release Jeffrey Epstein’s calendar as JCal

The DOJ, however, has acknowledged the errors and removed the personal information from its website. The problem now lies with Google, and more specifically, its artificial intelligence, which trawled the initial, unredacted document dump and still hosts the sensitive personal information of sex trafficking victims.

"Even after the government acknowledged the disclosure violated the rights of survivors and withdrew the information, online entities like Google continuously republish it, refusing [the] victim’s pleas to take it down," the lawsuit reads.

The allegations don't stop there. Not only did Google knowingly refuse to remove the sensitive information, which includes "full name, contact information, cities of residence, and association with Jeffrey Epstein," but the AI also allegedly "generated a hypertext link allowing anyone to send direct email to Plaintiff with the click of a button."

Worse still, for Google: the lawsuit alleges that other artificial intelligence companies did not improperly publish victim information: "Notably, several other publicly available AI tools that generate content by analyzing online sources, such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity, provided no victim-related information whatsoever in similar repeated testing."

This latest lawsuit comes on the heels of a damning Los Angeles jury ruling that found both Meta and Google-owned YouTube liable for "designing products that addict and harm children," prioritizing online engagement over the well-being of their users.

At the time of writing, Google has not issued a public statement on the lawsuit, but a verdict in this trial could set important precedents for privacy protections in the age of AI, with implications that would ripple across the tech landscape.

NYT Pips hints, answers for March 28, 2026

Sat, 03/28/2026 - 09:50

Welcome to your guide to Pips, the latest game in the New York Times catalogue.

Released in August 2025, the Pips puts a unique spin on dominoes, creating a fun single-player experience that could become your next daily gaming habit.

Currently, if you're stuck, the game only offers to reveal the entire puzzle, forcing you to move onto the next difficulty level and start over. However, we have you covered! Below are piecemeal answers that will serve as hints so that you can find your way through each difficulty level.

How to play Pips

If you've ever played dominoes, you'll have a passing familiarity for how Pips is played. As we've shared in our previous hints stories for Pips, the tiles, like dominoes, are placed vertically or horizontally and connect with each other. The main difference between a traditional game of dominoes and Pips is the color-coded conditions you have to address. The touching tiles don't necessarily have to match.

SEE ALSO: Wordle today: Answer, hints for March 28, 2026

The conditions you have to meet are specific to the color-coded spaces. For example, if it provides a single number, every side of a tile in that space must add up to the number provided. It is possible – and common – for only half a tile to be within a color-coded space.

Here are common examples you'll run into across the difficulty levels:

  • Number: All the pips in this space must add up to the number.

  • Equal: Every domino half in this space must be the same number of pips.

  • Not Equal: Every domino half in this space must have a completely different number of pips.

  • Less than: Every domino half in this space must add up to less than the number.

  • Greater than: Every domino half in this space must add up to more than the number.

If an area does not have any color coding, it means there are no conditions on the portions of dominoes within those spaces.

The NYT's latest daily word game has launched in association with The Athletic, the New York Times property that provides the publication's sports coverage. Connections can be played on both web browsers and mobile devices and require players to group four words that share something in common.

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

Each puzzle features 16 words and each grouping of words is split into four categories. These sets could comprise of anything from book titles, software, country names, etc. Even though multiple words will seem like they fit together, there's only one correct answer.

If a player gets all four words in a set correct, those words are removed from the board. Guess wrong and it counts as a mistake — players get up to four mistakes until the game ends.

Players can also rearrange and shuffle the board to make spotting connections easier. Additionally, each group is color-coded with yellow being the easiest, followed by green, blue, and purple. Like Wordle, you can share the results with your friends on social media.

They boast highly-rated active noise cancellation with two ANC modes — Quiet mode to shut out external noise completely and Aware mode that keeps you in tune with your surroundings. The sound is excellent and customisable via EQ settings on the Bose Music. Oh, and did we mention they look super stylish and available in lots of colorways? These are headphones that make a streetwise statement. That’s all reflected in the usual price point of $349, which makes this $100 discount a sweet-sounding offer.

And the noise cancellation isn’t just active, it’s adaptive, which means it reacts to your surroundings and adjusts in real time. You can still hear your surroundings but there’s no audio leakage. Your tunes are totally private. As with the QuietComfort Ultra they’re just $20 off their lowest-ever price, with a current saving of $70 on offer.

If you prefer on-ear headphones over earbuds (I hate how those little drivers feel crammed in my ears, too!), Mashable's Alex Bracetti says the Sony WH-CH520 are the best headphones under $50, period. At just $43.95 during Amazon's Big Spring Sale (a 37% drop from the $69.90 list price), they're an easy and affordable recommendation.

SEE ALSO: Amazon Big Spring Sale 2026: Live updates on the top deals

The Sony WH-CH520 offer up to 50 hours of playtime on a single charge, and if you forget to plug them in, a quick three-minute charge will buy you another 1.5 hours of listening time. While they don't have active noise cancellation or a 3.5mm audio jack for wired listening, they still deliver a sound profile that is "nicely balanced," where "deep lows blend well with transparent mids and crisp highs."

They also feature Sony's DSEE technology to upscale compressed music files. "This technology upscales the clarity and depth on all tracks — no matter the format — achieving near-hi-res quality when playing stored files or streaming music online," writes Bracetti.

Even though the plastic construction feels a bit flimsy and the on-ear design lets in some ambient noise, getting Sony's proprietary sound tech and multipoint Bluetooth connection (so you can connect to two devices at the same time) makes them an unbeatable value at this price.

Navigating the launch of Perfect Order has been tricky for Pokémon TCG collectors, with prices fluctuating wildly. With that in mind, we're delighted to see Perfect Order Booster Bundles back in stock at a competitive price on Amazon.

It's important to note that this Amazon price is not down to market price. That has been falling steadily over the last few weeks. Does this mean the Amazon price will continue to drop? It doesn't work like that. Anything close to market value is a good deal on Amazon.

The Perfect Order expansion features fan-favorites like Mega Zygarde ex, Mega Clefable ex, and Mega Starmie ex. Now that the set has officially released, we expect prices to finally stabilize.

The sun is rising, flowers are beginning to bloom, and pollen is in the air (so much pollen). This all means spring is finally here, and Amazon is ready to celebrate in its customary fashion: with deals across tons of categories.

Welcome to the third annual Amazon Big Spring Sale, with discounts set to run through March 31, just like last year. The Amazon Spring Sale is your best chance to save until Prime Day in June (or maybe July?), so don't miss out.

The deals featured in this sale reflect the spirit of the season: Outdoor gear and yard care supplies, spring cleaning supplies, spring fashion, and other household essentials will be the major featured deals. However, there's no shortage of savings on QLED TVs, flagship Sony headphones, Apple devices, Shark and Dyson hair tools, and of course, Amazon devices like Kindles and Echo smart speakers.

Each day of the Big Spring Sale will also feature daily deal drops on categories from spring cleaning to beauty. And be sure to check out our live blog for real-time updates.

Our editors' most recommended deals will be marked with a 🔥 emoji. Deals that are no longer available will be noted with strikethrough.

According to our review, Apple's AirPods Pro 3 are an "easy buy" if you've been looking for a new pair of AirPods. It's easy to see why: They have excellent ANC, eight hours of listening time per charge, a built-in heart rate monitor, and live translation features. While they hit a lower price of $184 back in February, this markdown is still worth checking out.

(Just note that their fit can be hit or miss.) They're a great value at their regular price of $80, but a coupon on their Amazon product page bumps them down to just $37.79 — a 50% savings. We saw them dip to $27 at Walmart on Black Friday, but this is their lowest-ever price on Amazon. Choose from four colors: graphite, cloud white, mauve, or sage.

Mashable's robot vacuum expert, Leah Stodart, tested and loved the Eufy C28 when it came out last month. At $499.99 for the Big Spring Sale, the Eufy C28 is not only the most affordable roller mop robot vacuum you'll find this season, but the best budget robot vacuum and mop combo period.

If you tried a cheap mopping robot vacuum in the past that smeared more than scrubbed, let the Eufy's self-rinsing roller mop change your mind. Its fluffy bath towel material is already more absorbent than the typical thin mopping pad — but just to ensure liquid spills aren't being smeared around, the C28's roller gets rinsed with clean water as it's mopping. Its self-emptying dock also washes and dries the mop after each cleaning.

Sat, 03/28/2026 - 05:00

Amazon is running a huge sale from March 25 to 31. No, we're not talking about another Prime Day. We're talking about the Amazon Big Spring Sale 2026.

This spring-themed event will go hard on outdoor equipment like drones and power stations, spring cleaning essentials like robot vacuums, and everything else shoppers are looking to buy after a long, cold winter. Our professional deal hunters have spotted record-low prices on Apple, Fire TVs, Kindles, and Sony headphones.

We've lined up all the best deals from the Amazon Big Spring Sale. Keep scrolling for the full schedule of events and the latest live updates, price drops, and news from the Mashable shopping team.

Is This The End of Hollywoods ‘Bad Moms’?

Sat, 03/28/2026 - 05:00

From If I Had Legs, I'd Kick You to Nightbitch and Die My Love, mothers in crisis are leading cinema lately. And while woman-on-the-verge is a well-explored cinematic trope, the sheer amount of recent releases exploring the subject is pointing towards a change in the way filmmakers tell mothers’ stories. In this How it Hits video, we look into the history of ‘bad moms’ on screen, and how recent films may be reflecting a wider cultural shift.

The looming ban on DJI imports will likely impact stock levels eventually, but we haven’t reached that tipping point quite yet. Instead, you can still snag the brand's most popular drones at record-low prices as we head into the final days of the Amazon Spring Sale.

As of March 28, the DJI Mini 5 Pro Fly More Combo is on sale for $1,099 at Amazon. That is a massive $500 off the list price and marks a record-low for the retailer. The DJI Mini 5 Pro is a genuine powerhouse, featuring a one-inch CMOS camera capable of 4K HDR filming at 60fps. For those looking to capture slow-motion footage, you can opt for 4K at 120fps, while night flying is made easy thanks to 360-degree Nightscape Omnidirectional Sensing and a nighttime return-to-home function. It is a premium choice for content creators looking to capture epic aerial shots.

We have seen this price before, but it has never dropped lower. Given the continued uncertainty surrounding the future of DJI drones in the U.S., we don't expect a deal this good to stick around for much longer. There is no need to panic, but if you have been eyeing an upgrade, we wouldn't recommend waiting.

With Pokémon TCG's Perfect Order expansion finally out this week on March 27, we're at the turning point where pre-launch ETBs will start going well above $100 upon release — making this the best time to grab the Perfect Order Elite Trainer Box for under $100.

Soon after, we predict the Perfect Order ETB will follow the market's usual trend (like other Pokémon ETBs on Amazon), going well above the $110 mark as availability starts to drop. Now is the best time to jump in before that happens.

The Perfect Order Elite Trainer Box includes nine Perfect Order booster packs, a full-art foil Tyrunt promo card, 65 sleeves, 40 Energy cards, a player’s guide, dice, a coin, a collector’s box, six dividers, and a code card for Pokémon TCG Live.

We're in the middle of Amazon’s weeklong Big Spring Sale, and in the past few days, we've seen some of the best gaming deals of the year so far. And that's whether your console of choice is the PS5, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch. Whether you’re shopping for a new handheld console, a discounted game, or an upgrade for your setup, Amazon (and Woot!) is showing out with impressive price cuts.

Alongside our roundups of Lego deals, TV deals, and Pokémon deals, here are the best gaming offers you can find on-site right now.

$599.99 Save $60   Get Deal Why we like it

Handheld gaming PCs are still far from cheap, but Amazon has already shaved something off one of the newer Xbox-branded options. The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally is down to $539.99 from $599.99, which knocks $60 off the list price, and beats the price we saw heading into the sale by $10.

This is a new record-low price for the ROG Xbox Ally (confirmed by price tracker camelcamelcamel), making it an especially great deal if you're in the market for a portable system that blends Xbox branding with the flexibility of a Windows handheld. You're getting a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz touchscreen, AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, and a three-month Xbox Game Pass Premium subscription bundled in.

This handheld model supports Xbox Game Pass, but you can also run games on Steam, Epic Games, and other Windows titles. That gives it a lot more versatility than a locked-down console-style device.

Sadly, our former top pick video game deal, Mario Kart World at its lowest price ever, sold out. That said, a video game deal for gamers on the opposite end of the spectrum is still available — Silent Hill f. The latest in Konami's Silent Hill franchise was released last fall, and to plenty of critical acclaim.

The reviewer at our sister site, PCMag (also owned by Ziff Davis), gave the horror survival game a 5/5 rating and the site's Editors' Choice Award. In his review, he wrote, "Silent Hill f is one of the best horror games I've played in years, and one of the best games of the year." If you've yet to pick it up, grabbing it for half off isn't a bad deal at all.
