Jimmy Kimmel gleefully roasts footage of Trump talking about his $400 million ballroom

Wed, 05/20/2026 - 06:46

Donald Trump talking to the media about his controversial $400 million White House ballroom in front of a noisy construction site was always going to a silver platter of potential late night jokes — and in the monologue above, Jimmy Kimmel makes the most of it.

The host has more than a few ridiculous moments to chose between, from Trump saying it's "a very complex building" and "the roof also goes down into the basement" to the president's poster boards blowing away in the wind.

"Can you imagine the Iranians watching that this morning?" asks Kimmel. "Minutes before his deadline to bomb them he's showing off plans for the new dance floor, where he's going to cha-cha to 'YMCA'. I mean if he wasn't so dumb, it might be diabolical. But it isn't. He's dumb."

$164.70 Save $20.82 Get Deal

If you missed out on Edge of Eternities when the Magic: The Gathering set first launched, Amazon’s latest price cut gives you a decent excuse to finally give your deckbuilding a deep space theme.

As of May 20, Amazon has the Magic: The Gathering Edge of Eternities Play Booster Box available from $143.88 through its other sellers section, down from the $164.70 list price. That works out to 13% off, saving you $20.82 before tax. Since you’re getting 30 Play Boosters in the box, you’re paying about $4.80 per pack.

This $143.88 listing, sold by Gaming Universe Corp, comes with an expected delivery date range between May 26-28. However, if you don’t mind paying slightly more, a $144.96 listing — shipped and sold by Champion Gaming — can come as soon as May 21-22 at the time of writing.

Walmart has the same box listed for $142.95, down from $169.99, while TCGplayer listings start from $124.97 with shipping included. So Amazon isn’t the cheapest overall, but if you prefer ordering through Amazon as your main trading card retailer, these are still decent prices for the full sealed box.

The Edge of Eternities theme is Magic’s first proper space opera expansion, sending players into the Sothera system with alien factions, distant planets, cosmic magic, and an unstable supervoid threatening the center of it all. It also brings four newer mechanics into play: Station, Warp, Landers, and Void.

Inside the box are 30 Edge of Eternities Play Boosters. Each pack includes 14 Magic cards and one token, with one to four cards of Rare or higher rarity, three to five Uncommons, six to nine Commons, and one Land card. Every booster also includes at least one Traditional Foil, with a chance at a Foil Borderless Mythic and Traditional Foil Lands replacing regular lands in 20% of packs.

Among other MTG deals, you can still get the Magic: The Gathering Marvel's Spider-Man Scene Box at $14 off. What’s more, preorders for the official KPop Demon Hunters Trading Cards are live on Amazon

If you’re a Pokémon TCG fan, the newly-announced Pitch Black expansion is available to pre-order at TCGplayer.

Perfect Order might not be the newest Pokémon TCG set anymore, but it’s still the most budget-friendly expansion compared to Ascended Heroes or Phantasmal Flames.

As of May 20, Amazon has the Pokémon TCG Mega Evolution Perfect Order Elite Trainer Box back under $80, down from its $84.99 list price. This 6% discount saves you $5.30 on the sold-and-shipped-by-Amazon listing, with free delivery available. Amazon does offer lower prices from other sellers, though some of those don’t come with free Prime shipping.

Over on TCGplayer, the Perfect Order Elite Trainer Box is currently listed from as low as $70. Walmart is another slightly cheaper alternative, with a price of $78.94 at the lowest. Against TCGplayer’s $67.12 market price and $79.94 listed median, this puts Amazon’s deal slightly above market, but still close enough to be worth considering if fast, direct shipping is the priority.

The Pokémon TCG Ascended Heroes Mega Meganium ex Box is on sale at Amazon — save nearly $10

Wed, 05/20/2026 - 06:33

TL;DR: Amazon has the Pokémon TCG Mega Evolution Ascended Heroes Mega Meganium ex Box available from $68.99, down from its typical $77.95 price.

$77.95 Save $8.96   Get Deal

Ascended Heroes is solidifying itself as the most expensive set in the Pokémon TCG, but you can still find price cuts on collections of booster packs if you know where to look.

As of May 20, Amazon has the Pokémon TCG Mega Evolution Ascended Heroes Mega Meganium ex Box available from $68.99 with free delivery. That’s down from its typical $77.95 price, working out to an 11% discount and saving you $8.96 before tax — with delivery between May 27 and June 2. Amazon’s main listing is currently a little higher at $70.30, also down from $77.95 — also with free delivery, but with a guarantee to arrive by May 28.

If you don’t mind shopping away from Amazon, TCGplayer has unopened listings starting at $48.69 plus shipping, putting the cheapest option at $53.68 before tax. That’s only slightly above TCGplayer’s current $53.64 market price.

Amazon is still a fine go-to if you prefer its free shipping, simple checkout, and 30-day refund or replacement window for added peace of mind.

Inside the box, you’ll get one foil promo card featuring Mega Meganium ex, one oversize lenticular promo card featuring Mega Meganium ex, and four Pokémon TCG Mega Evolution Ascended Heroes booster packs. Because single Ascended Heroes Booster Packs on Amazon cost up to $20.99 these days, just buying four on their own would cost you $83.96, minus the promo cards. With this Meganium ex Box, its new Amazon price would save you as much as $14.97 for four packs compared to buying them individually.

Although currently not available on Amazon, the Pokémon TCG’s newly-announced Pitch Black expansion is available to pre-order at TCGplayer.

Daily Shows Ronny Chieng breaks down Trumps $1.8 billion slush fund

Wed, 05/20/2026 - 06:30

Announced on Monday, Donald Trump's Department of Justice handed the U.S. president a $1.8 billion fund financed by taxpayers, which could be used to compensate Trump's allies — including those prosecuted for the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. The "Anti-Weaponisation Fund" was established by the DoJ "in exchange" for the Trump family to drop their $10 billion lawsuit against Trump's IRS disclosing their tax returns.

If all this sounds...off to you, critics have called out Trump's "slush fund," including late show hosts like Stephen Colbert — and The Daily Show's Ronny Chieng breaks it down in the clip above.

"If you're confused by what's going on here, I went to law school OK? So let me explain it to you visually," said Chieng, showing a graphic to demonstrate. "Donald Trump, the man, is suing the IRS, which happens to be headed by Donald Trump, the president, which then reached a settlement with the Justice Department, headed by a man named Donald Trump, to create a slush fund controlled by, you guessed it, Donald Trump."

"This guy's playing 5D Chess with corruption here," the host later added. "I bet he's building the ballroom just so he can do a slip and fall."

The newer XM6 headphones and brand new 1000X the Collexion headphones are available to buy right now, but the XM5s are a pair we still think are worth every cent. We gave them an honorable mention on our list of the best headphones, writing: "Originally released in 2022, the Sony XM5 headphones are still legendary. They had unbeatable ANC and sound for the money, and even in 2026, they sound shockingly good."

In our comparison of the Sony WH-1000XM6 vs. Sony WH-1000XM5, Mashable's Bethany Allard also said, "Despite being a 2022 release, the XM5s are far from feeling outdated at this point in time, making them a great option for sound quality, comfort, and noise cancellation."

This Memorial Day deal may not last for long. Act fast to save on the Sony XM5s while the offer is still live at Amazon.

Child safety organizations accuse Roblox of violating FTC rules

Wed, 05/20/2026 - 06:00

Online safety organizations have filed a letter to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), asking the agency to formally assess Roblox's alleged risks to children.

The Request for Investigation, submitted by child safety nonprofit Fairplay and the National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE), argues that Roblox's design features and advertising violate portions of the FTC Act in ways that endanger minor users.

"The FTC has the authority to stop Roblox from raking in billions of dollars in profit every year at the expense of our children’s safety and healthy development. We call on the commission to investigate Roblox’s unfair trade practices and acts, and to scrutinize the platform’s compliance with children’s online privacy law," Fairplay policy counsel Haley Hinkle wrote in a press release.

SEE ALSO: Jury tosses Musk OpenAI lawsuit, saves Sam Altman

The organizations claim the platform is specifically violating Section 5 of the FTC Act, the federal regulation that prohibits unfair or deceptive acts or practices, including false advertising.

The letter urges the agency to investigate Roblox's marketing of virtual currency (Robux), its chat and communication tools, and its use of "engagement-maximizing design features" as unfair conduct under Section 5. It argues that Roblox's representation of platform safety features and the developmental appropriateness of Roblox activities is deceptive.

The organizations are also asking the FTC to scrutinize Roblox's compliance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), which governs the online collection of personal information for children under 13. The letter claims the platform gathers a "substantial amount of data" that could be linked to players' usernames.

"Despite our warnings over the years, Roblox refused to make changes to protect children from harm, only recently making some design changes to prevent unknown adults from contacting children," Haley McNamara, executive director of NCOSE, wrote. "Roblox has a history of harm and callousness towards children and concerned parents, and must be investigated by the FTC for the sake of children worldwide."

Other groups, including the Consumer Federation of America, Jonathan Haidt’s The Anxious Generation Movement, and ParentsSOS, signed on in support.

In a statement to Mashable, a Roblox spokesperson said:

Roblox strongly disputes these claims. Our platform is designed to provide a positive, healthy and enjoyable experience — we build for fun and connection, not short-term engagement. While no system can be perfect, we have a set of safeguards designed to support a safe and civil environment, and clear policies for game creators that require fair treatment of players.

Most games on Roblox are free to play and no-one is required to purchase Robux. In the first quarter of 2026, only 1.4% of our 132 million daily active users were payers on the platform. In addition, we have clear policies prohibiting both actual and simulated gambling, and a set of rules governing how game creators can use gameplay mechanics like paid random items.

Roblox has faced multiple lawsuits filed by individuals, parents, and state attorneys general that allege the platform is not doing enough to protect young users. In 2023, a cohort of families whose children allegedly encountered inappropriate content on the platform filed a class-action lawsuit against Roblox. The claim similarly accused Roblox of "negligent misrepresentation and false advertising," and started a wave of criticism that the child gaming site was enabling child predators

This was followed by a slew of lawsuits in 2025, including a Louisiana filing that claimed Roblox intentionally failed to implement safety measures intended to curb child sex abuse materials (CSAM). Texas attorney general Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit in November, claiming Roblox flagrantly ignored online safety laws and deceived parents. Paxton has since taken aim at streaming giant Netflix and its data collection policies for child users

In response to growing concerns, Roblox has unveiled additional platform safety features, including global age verification and age-gated child accounts for users under 16. Over the past few years, the platform has also introduced linked parent accounts, expanded parental supervision tools, and additional AI-powered chat moderation features.

Stephen Colbert calls Trumps $1.8 billion fund an all-you-can-fraud buffet

Wed, 05/20/2026 - 05:57

The U.S. Department of Justice awarded Donald Trump a taxpayer-financed $1.8 billion fund that could be used to compensate the president's allies — potentially including pro-Trump insurrectionists prosecuted for the Jan. 6 Capitol attack.

According to the DoJ, the so-called "Anti-Weaponisation Fund" was set up "in exchange" for the Trump family to drop their $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS and the Treasury Department for disclosing their tax returns.

Critics have called out Trump's "slush fund," including late show hosts like The Daily Show's Ronny Chieng and The Late Show's Stephen Colbert, who ripped into it during Tuesday's show.

"Now, you might be saying surely this can't get more corrupt. Shut up, I'm talking, and it can," said Colbert. "Because most egregiously the guidelines announced by the Acting Attorney General stipulate: 'Once the funds are deposited into the designated account, the United States has no liability whatsoever for the protection or safeguarding of those funds, regardless of bank failure, fraudulent transfers, or any other fraud or misuse of the funds.'

"So, it's just an all-you-can-fraud buffet. It's an unprecedented level of grift. Because again, funds of this scale typically are either created by an act of Congress or supervised by a court, and this settlement is just some piece of paper they printed out saying that Trump can do anything he wants with a bunch of your money. Officer, you can't arrest me, for you see, I've already laminated my homemade murder license."

SEE ALSO: When is Stephen Colbert's last show? How to watch the end of 'The Late Show'.

Colbert also noted that the Justice Department posted an addendum to the original settlement, which says that the IRS is "hereby forever barred and precluded from prosecuting or pursuing, any and all claims, counterclaims, causes of action, appeals, or requests for any relief" of Trump affiliates and related businesses.

"Trump just gave himself a get out of jail free card, and a way better one than Jeffrey Epstein got."

Jon Stewart tells Stephen Colbert what he really thinks about The Late Show ending

Wed, 05/20/2026 - 05:53

If there's one thing you can guarantee with Jon Stewart, it's that he's not going to hold back. He made his feelings about The Late Show being cancelled clear when the news broke last year, and — appearing on the third to last ever episode in the clip above — he makes them even clearer to host Stephen Colbert.

"What upsets me about this situation is that first of all, you're just a tremendous human and one of my favorite people," Stewart tells Colbert. "Second of all, I've seen your talents from Exit 57 to writing, to...he can do whatever he wants to do, but the ubiquitous bloviating of the commander-in-chief has put us all as defined as who we are in opposition to him, and it's just a ridiculous framing. It's a minute portion of the joy machine that you call your show. And it's annoying.

"Let me say this, and I mean this from the bottom of my heart, not just for this show but for the country: The day, oh people, close your eyes and dream, the day that the electorate in this great nation that we call home repudiates this putrid administration...the day that that happens, my brother, there will be, and I mean this, the day that that happens there will be a joyful noise from the bowels of this great country that will make Hungary's repudiation of Orbán look like an Amish sabbath."

The conversation ends on a lighter note, with Colbert and Stewart finishing their interview in some comfy vibrating armchairs before being serenaded by singer Andra Day.

Google has been dominating the headlines this week, for good reason. Google I/O delivered loads of exciting news for anyone interested in AI, smart glasses, and all thing Android.

We recognize that this is a tough time for Apple devotees, so we've scoured the market for something to keep this dedicated bunch going whilst the attention is on Google. We know that Apple users don't like to be out of the spotlight for long, so we've tracked down a selection of standout mobile deals that deserve some attention.

T-Mobile has just dropped new iPhone deals that are live for a limited time:

  • Apple iPhone 17e — free when you switch to T-Mobile and bring your number on most plans.

  • Apple iPhone 17 — free when you switch and trade in an eligible phone on an Experience More or Experience Beyond plan.

  • Apple iPhone 17 Pro — free when you trade in an eligible phone in any condition on an Experience Beyond plan.

The value of these iPhones is applied as 24 monthly credits to your bill. That means you're still paying for the phone but you're getting paid back in full over time.

It's important to note that you do need to pay taxes and a $35 device connection fee with these "free deals," but that's always the case with this type of offer from leading mobile carriers like T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon. Anyway, that's a small price to pay for the latest iPhone tech.

The Shark BlastBoss uses blasts of air to clean spots a vacuum cant. I keep finding new ways to use it.

Wed, 05/20/2026 - 05:00

In terms of physics, the Shark BlastBoss is kind of the antithesis of a vacuum: It's still a cordless cleaning tool, but it blows instead of sucks. I swear I wanted to try it for more reasons than the fact that it comes in pink. Upon the BlastBoss's debut in March 2026, I immediately thought of all the dust and crumbs I encounter regularly that don't really budge from the suction power of a robot or stick vacuum.

The Shark BlastBoss is marketed for a huge range of indoor and outdoor use. Since I don't have any outdoor space at my apartment, I also took it on a trip to my parents' house to test its versatility in a garage and a basement and on a porch. I found several ways to use the BlastBoss just in the past month, and there are countless possibilities beyond that. TL;DR? Use the table of contents to skip down to the testing tea for usage inside, outside, and in the car.

What does the Shark BlastBoss do?

The Shark BlastBoss is a handheld cordless blower that uses high-velocity air to clean dirty spots where it doesn't make sense to use a vacuum.

BlastBoss air is stronger than air being sucked the opposite way from a vacuum. Credit: Leah Stodart / Mashable The BlastBoss weighs less than 1.5 pounds. Credit: Leah Stodart / Mashable

The reach of suction power has a much more limited radius than air being blown out the other direction. And often, stubborn household dust or debris lodged in tiny cracks only responds to the positive pressure of a quick blow (rather than the negative pressure of vacuum suction). I won't pretend to understand the science behind it further than that — all I know is that people my age were born knowing to blow on an uncooperative N64 cartridge, not try to vacuum it.

The BlastBoss is really just an intense embodiment of blowing the dust off, with power up to 190 MPH that can be controlled through attachments like an extender wand, broom, and precision nozzle. Battery life depends on which of the three settings you're using: It can last between five and seven minutes on boost mode, up to 10 minutes on outdoor mode, and nearly an hour on indoor mode.

SEE ALSO: 'Why does my robot vacuum suck now?' Well, when's the last time you cleaned it?

The BlastBoss comes in five colors: classic gray or white, plus blue, green, or pink. (Cosmo and Wanda, you ain't slick.)

Using the Shark BlastBoss indoors

A lot of BlastBoss advertising shows it being used outside or in a car, so I initially wasn't sure how much use I'd get out of it inside my apartment. My first order of business was to blow the dust and cat hair off my MacBook keyboard, which was borderline ASMR to watch. Then it hit me: This thing is literally a power duster.

I've been using the BlastBoss to sweep off any items that attract that sticky layer of dust: knick-knacks on the TV stand, picture frames, faux plant leaves, the top of the record player, high-up shelves that I can't see but I know are covered in gray fluff. I try to wipe most of these down with an actual cloth from time to time, but the BlastBoss is a great way to make dusting a once-a-week chore instead of a once-or-twice-per-year chore.

SEE ALSO: The Dreame FP10 air purifier cleans fur off its own filter. Just as crucially, it matches my living room aesthetic.

Dusting off the bar shelves on my kitchen island was a breeze — the BlastBoss's indoor setting is gentle enough to blow off fragile items without knocking them over. My handheld Dyson feels too big and awkward to sneak in between each glass, and can't suck up the super-fine debris that's smaller than a cat hair.

If you weren't particularly passionate about dusting before, you are now. Credit: Leah Stodart / Mashable These shelves get disgustingly dusty, and cat toys always get lost underneath. Credit: Leah Stodart / Mashable

I also realized that the BlastBoss is really good at getting small items out from under furniture, as long as there's room for it to blow out the other side. One of my cats constantly loses stuff under the bottom shelf of that same kitchen island, so I pointed the BlastBoss down there to see what happens. A handful of bobby pins, a crinkle ball, and her beloved spider ring "toy" shot out the other side, as well as a ton of crumbs and hair tumbleweeds.

As a professional robot vacuum reviewer, I'm constantly down on the floor to inspect a vacuum's cleaning performance. That also means that I'm constantly face-to-face with all of the fallen food particles wedged under the fridge and oven. The BlastBoss was able to blow some of those out into the middle of the floor. And that perfectly aligns with the whole ethos of my job: Make a mess and let a robot vacuum deal with it.

Using the Shark BlastBoss outdoors

The BlastBoss is an instant staple tool for anyone with a porch, deck or patio, or even just a garage.

You'll get around 26 inches of reach with both extender attachments clicked on, and it's lightweight enough to comfortable hold up with one hand. My mom was more than happy for me to blow down the spider webs and remnants from an old bird nest from the lanterns on the side of her house.

This is so much better than getting spiderwebs stuck on broom bristles. Credit: Leah Stodart / Mashable Outdoor mode is very effective on dirty cushions, even in the cracks. Credit: Leah Stodart / Mashable

It's also much easier to blow leaves off of patio furniture cushions than it is to try to brush them off (or suck them up with a stick vacuum, if you really wanted to bring it outside).

When the broom attachment is clicked on, it's a bad day to be a pile of leaves in the yard or a layer of pine needles on the porch. I was able to clear the 15+ foot long concrete patio of lawnmower clippings and a mess of seeds from the bird feeder in a minute or two — much faster (and less of a workout) than doing it all with a manual broom.

Shark calls this a "BlastBroom." Credit: Leah Stodart / Mashable Your typical sweeping motion goes a lot further with a massive gush of air behind it. Credit: Leah Stodart / Mashable

I think you'd get your money's worth out of the BlastBoss in a single fall season alone. I mean, it's basically a leaf blower — but a cute, compact one that wouldn't feel like it has to be stored outside. Back to my parents' house, I can already picture how convenient it'll be to grab the BlastBoss out of a closet near a door for quick sidewalk and patio upkeep (rather than going all the way to a storage shelf in the garage).

Using the Shark BlastBoss in the car

Regardless of your spot on the "religiously" to "never" scale of vacuuming out your car, the BlastBoss is awesome to have on hand for quick seat and trunk refreshes.

I can hit my car interior with my handheld Dyson all I want, but there are always some little specks that won't budge. The jet of air from the BlastBoss takes care of them in a snap. For specks in seat cushion cracks, I just open the closest door and blow them right off the side. For specks stuck in the ridges of the rubber mat in my trunk, I get in my back carseat and blow them out the back. Parents on TikTok and YouTube do the same thing with snack spills in car seats.

Even if I don't eat in the car, crumbs seem to spawn under here. Credit: Leah Stodart / Mashable Boost mode got the sticky pieces that don't come off when I shake the mat upside down. Credit: Leah Stodart / Mashable

I also use the BlastBoss to blow dirt, rocks, and leaves out from under the two front seats, where my handheld vacuum won't fit. I still have to vacuum that debris up, but the BlastBoss at least gets it to a spot where the vacuum can reach it.

One of my first thoughts was that the BlastBoss would rock for getting pesky-ass sand out of the car. My second thought was that you could theoretically just blow legs and shoes off before anyone even gets in the car. If you're a frequent beachgoer or otherwise outdoorsy person, you could just keep the BlastBoss in the car and grab it whenever you need it — it doesn't die just sitting there, as a lot of cordless vacuums do. Mine has only needed to be charged twice in the month that I've had it, and there was a day or two when I was using it way more intensely than normal for testing purposes.

SEE ALSO: The Shark UV Reveal's blacklight found stains that other robot vacuums missed, but I still have a gripe with its mop

The internet has filled me in on multiple hacks that I would have never thought up on my own. Apparently, you can use the BlastBoss to blow dry your car after washing it to prevent streaks and water spots, or use the precision nozzle to blow up an inflatable mattress.

Is the Shark BlastBoss worth it?

The Shark BlastBoss has proven to be super handy in small spaces and larger homes, plus outdoor spaces and the car. If you know you should be dusting or sweeping out your car more often than you do, I think the BlastBoss makes the job quick and easy enough that you'll have the motivation to do it.

Not that there are many other cute and casual air blasters for comparison, but the $149.99 price tag seems pretty practical for a tool with so many uses. Plus, the compact handle and removable attachments should be out of the way in storage.

SpaceXs 12th Starship flight: How to watch the test live

Wed, 05/20/2026 - 05:00

SpaceX plans to launch the next test of Starship on Thursday evening after a seven-month break spent rebuilding major parts of the rocket and its launch site.

The company last flew Starship in October 2025. Since then, engineers have redesigned the engines, reworked the spacecraft's heat shield, and built a new launchpad at Starbase, SpaceX's private launch complex in South Texas.

The upcoming mission, known as Flight 12, will debut what SpaceX calls the next generation of Starship and its Super Heavy booster. Together, the two stages stand about 400 feet tall and form the largest and most powerful rocket system ever built.

The test carries high stakes for both SpaceX and NASA. The U.S. space agency plans to use Starship to land astronauts on the moon as part of its Artemis program later this decade. At the same time, SpaceX founder Elon Musk wants the vehicle to eventually carry people and cargo to Mars. But before that can happen, the company must prove the rocket can launch reliably, survive the fiery plunge back through Earth's atmosphere, and eventually fly again without months of repairs between missions.

"The Starship production pipeline is full and will complete roughly 10 more ships and about half that number of boosters this year," Musk said in an X post on Monday. "If something goes wrong, it will not be a major setback, unless the launch stand is destroyed."

SEE ALSO: This NASA gear may be the first to survive the brutal lunar night How to watch SpaceX's Starship launch

People can watch the launch live on SpaceX's website or on the company's X account. The webcast is expected to begin as early as 4:45 p.m. CT on Thursday, May 21, or about 45 minutes before liftoff. SpaceX says the launch window opens at 5:30 p.m. CT, though weather or technical issues could still delay the attempt. The date has already been pushed back a couple of times, and the company has created a social media thread to track the postponements.

The long gap since the last flight reflects how much SpaceX has changed after earlier tests exposed weaknesses in the hardware. But the overhaul extended beyond the rocket itself. The launch site now includes a new launch mount, upgraded fuel systems, and redesigned "chopsticks," the mechanical arms meant to catch returning boosters.

A revamped Starship rocket and spacecraft sit fully stacked at the private SpaceX launchpad in South Texas ahead of Flight Test 12. Credit: SpaceX

One of Starship's biggest trouble spots is its heat shield, which uses thousands of protective tiles to protect the spacecraft during reentry from space. As Starship falls back through the atmosphere at hypersonic speeds, friction superheats the air around it. Earlier flights lost tiles or suffered damage underneath them.

This time, SpaceX plans to intentionally remove one tile so engineers can study how the surrounding tiles handle the stress. The company also painted some tiles white to help onboard cameras track changes during flight.

Flight 12 will also test upgrades to the rocket's Raptor engines. The newer versions generate more power while using fewer exposed parts — changes SpaceX hopes will improve reliability and reduce maintenance.

The mission includes several other experiments aimed at future deep-space flights. Starship will deploy 20 mock Starlink satellites during the more than one-hour test and attempt to restart one of its engines while in space, a maneuver future moon and Mars missions will likely require. If the ship completes the flight, it is expected to splash down in the Indian Ocean.

Meanwhile, the Super Heavy rocket booster will attempt a controlled splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico rather than returning to the launch tower for a midair catch. SpaceX says it chose the more cautious approach this time because the booster design changed significantly since earlier flights.

Even after nearly a dozen test missions, Starship remains very much a work in progress. SpaceX follows a development strategy that relies on frequent testing, accepting failures, and quickly redesigning hardware between flights.

Meanwhile, NASA is rewriting its moon plans around SpaceX and competitor Blue Origin's commercial hardware, bending the missions around their contractors' needs to get astronauts onto the surface faster. In public, they talk about cadence and "muscle memory." Behind the scenes, they're watching one thing above all: how quickly SpaceX can reshape its lunar lander to match the new schedule.

"SpaceX has been considering alternatives of their current Starship design," said Lori Glaze, NASA's acting exploration chief, "while implementing a more streamlined approach to try and speed things up and pull things forward."
