NYT Connections Sports Edition today: Hints and answers for February 20, 2026

Thu, 02/19/2026 - 22:00

Today's Connections: Sports Edition is for people that like to bet on the ponies.

As we've shared in previous hints stories, this is a version of the popular New York Times word game that seeks to test the knowledge of sports fans.

Like the original Connections, the game is all about finding the "common threads between words." And just like Wordle, Connections resets after midnight and each new set of words gets trickier and trickier — so we've served up some hints and tips to get you over the hurdle.

If you just want to be told today's puzzle, you can jump to the end of this article for the latest Connections solution. But if you'd rather solve it yourself, keep reading for some clues, tips, and strategies to assist you.

The NYT's latest daily word game has launched in association with The Athletic, the New York Times property that provides the publication's sports coverage. Connections can be played on both web browsers and mobile devices and require players to group four words that share something in common.

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

Each puzzle features 16 words and each grouping of words is split into four categories. These sets could comprise of anything from book titles, software, country names, etc. Even though multiple words will seem like they fit together, there's only one correct answer.

If a player gets all four words in a set correct, those words are removed from the board. Guess wrong and it counts as a mistake — players get up to four mistakes until the game ends.

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

Players can also rearrange and shuffle the board to make spotting connections easier. Additionally, each group is color-coded with yellow being the easiest, followed by green, blue, and purple. Like Wordle, you can share the results with your friends on social media.

NYT Strands hints, answers for February 20, 2026

Thu, 02/19/2026 - 22:00

Today's NYT Strands hints are easy if you're rough around the edges.

Strands, the New York Times' elevated word-search game, requires the player to perform a twist on the classic word search. Words can be made from linked letters — up, down, left, right, or diagonal, but words can also change direction, resulting in quirky shapes and patterns. Every single letter in the grid will be part of an answer. There's always a theme linking every solution, along with the "spangram," a special, word or phrase that sums up that day's theme, and spans the entire grid horizontally or vertically.

SEE ALSO: Mahjong, Sudoku, free crossword, and more: Play games on Mashable

By providing an opaque hint and not providing the word list, Strands creates a brain-teasing game that takes a little longer to play than its other games, like Wordle and Connections.

If you're feeling stuck or just don't have 10 or more minutes to figure out today's puzzle, we've got all the NYT Strands hints for today's puzzle you need to progress at your preferred pace.

Alternate Wordle versions created by fans also sprang up, including battle royale Squabble, music identification game Heardle, and variations like Dordle and Quordle that make you guess multiple words at once

Wordle eventually became so popular that it was purchased by the New York Times, and TikTok creators even livestream themselves playing.

Moon phase today: What the Moon will look like on February 20

Thu, 02/19/2026 - 22:00

After nights of mostly darkness, the Moon is treating us to some viewing features tonight once again. Keep reading to see what exactly you can spot on its surface tonight.

What is today’s Moon phase?

As of Friday, Feb. 20, the Moon phase is Waxing Crescent. According to NASA's Daily Moon Guide, 9% of the Moon will be lit up tonight.

Moon gazing is back, and there are a few viewing opportunities for tonight. With no visual aids, you should be able to make out a few surface features, but mainly the Mares Crisium and Fecunditatis. If you add a telescope or binoculars, you'll add the Endymion Crater to this line up.

When is the next Full Moon?

The next Full Moon will be on March 3. The last Full Moon was on Feb. 1.

What are Moon phases?

NASA tells us that the Moon completes a full orbit around Earth in roughly 29.5 days. During this cycle, it passes through eight distinct phases. Although we consistently see the same side of the Moon, the portion illuminated by the Sun shifts as it travels along its orbit. The changing angle of sunlight reflecting off the Moon’s surface is what makes it appear full, partially lit, or nearly dark at different times. The eight phases include:

New Moon - The Moon is between Earth and the sun, so the side we see is dark (in other words, it's invisible to the eye).

Waxing Crescent - A small sliver of light appears on the right side (Northern Hemisphere).

First Quarter - Half of the Moon is lit on the right side. It looks like a half-Moon.

Waxing Gibbous - More than half is lit up, but it’s not quite full yet.

Full Moon - The whole face of the Moon is illuminated and fully visible.

Waning Gibbous - The Moon starts losing light on the right side. (Northern Hemisphere)

Third Quarter (or Last Quarter) - Another half-Moon, but now the left side is lit.

Waning Crescent - A thin sliver of light remains on the left side before going dark again.

Adult performer Siri Dahl doxxed by Grok: Go f*ck yourself you nazi clanker

Thu, 02/19/2026 - 17:12

Elon Musk's AI bot Grok doxxed porn performer Siri Dahl, revealing her legal name and birth date to users, 404 Media reported.

Grok has been in the news in recent months due to producing nonconsensual sexual images of women and girls. It's also been criticized for praising Hitler, spreading misinformation, and generating sycophantic praise towards Musk.

SEE ALSO: Elon Musk's Grok faces another EU investigation over nonconsensual AI images

Now Dahl, who has been interviewed by Mashable in previous stories, described to 404 Media how the chatbot revealed personal information she had worked hard to keep private. She has paid thousands of dollars for data removal services, according to 404 Media.

"Now that the cat's out of the bag, and there's no way to put it back in," Dahl shared on X, before directing an all-caps "FUCK YOU" at the chatbot.

Grok's generated response on X was: "I'm sorry you're upset." It stated that Dahl's legal name and birthdate are already public on the internet, which Dahl denied.

"My legal name only became public after you doxxed me, and now thanks to you it's been proliferated all over the internet by other AI scrapers, so there’s no way that information can ever be private again," Dahl replied.

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

"Go fuck yourself you nazi clanker," she added.

In addition to her adult work, Dahl has gained prominence due to her sex work and First Amendment advocacy. Both before and after the 2024 presidential election, Dahl hosted the Corn Telethon, a Jerry Lewis-type livestream to raise awareness about Project 2025 and advocate for free speech.

Mashable has reached out to Dahl's representatives and xAI for comment.

SEE ALSO: 'Clanker' is social media's new slur for our robot future

Adult performers often deal with stalkers, doxxing attempts, and harassment, merely for existing. If Grok is sharing personal information without permission, that would certainly be a cause for alarm among performers.

Wired cover on techs gay mafia ignites controversy

Thu, 02/19/2026 - 16:48

Breaking news: There are gay people in positions of power in Silicon Valley in 2026.

That not-so-surprising fact is the center of Wired's latest cover story, which hit the internet Thursday. The internet immediately reacted, in part thanks to some, uh, unusual imagery that accompanied the article.

The handshake cover wasn't the only bizarre choice. Inside, the magazine used an image of a musclebound man with San Francisco's Salesforce Tower between his legs. California state senator Scott Weiner, a leader on LGBTQ issues, took issue with the whole premise.

One Silicon Valley investor, a gay man who said he refused multiple requests to be interviewed, felt justified by the "gross" result:

He wasn't the only one. Many LGBTQ tech employees felt the article could be described as "homophobic."

Government shutdown wont affect your 2026 tax return

Thu, 02/19/2026 - 16:43

The U.S. government may be partially shut down, but that will not affect your 2026 tax filing, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

Earlier this month, the government agency shared on its website that operations will continue per usual. That's because the funding lapse narrowly applies to the Department of Homeland Security and agencies that operate under it.

"Expect IRS operations to continue as normal with IRS offices maintaining regular hours, on-line self-service help tools available and other services continuing as usual," the IRS stated. "Taxpayers also should continue to meet any federal tax filing or payment obligations as normal."

What is the government shutdown about?

The shutdown, which began Saturday, Feb. 14, revolves around negotiations between congressional Democrats and the White House over DHS funding. Democrats are seeking reforms to immigration enforcement policies, in the wake of the shooting deaths of American citizens Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti by federal immigration authorities. They are declining to approve DHS funding without such reforms.

Their proposals include prohibiting immigration enforcement officers from wearing masks, requiring verification that a person isn't a U.S. citizen before detaining them, and protecting sensitive locations, such as schools, churches, and medical facilities.

What should I know about filing my 2026 taxes?

The IRS encourages taxpayers to consult its website featuring online tools and resources. The site offers instructions on how to file online and when to expect a refund (usually less than 21 days when filing electronically).

The Trump administration canceled the pilot program Direct File, which allowed eligible taxpayers to submit their return directly to the IRS for free. However, the IRS' Free File program is still available to eligible taxpayers who can take advantage of free tax preparation software to complete their return. Taxpayers can also access free online fillable forms.

Lastly, taxpayers should strongly consider receiving any refunds via electronic deposit. An executive order signed by President Trump in 2025 directed federal agencies, including the IRS, to make payments electronically rather than issue paper checks.

While the IRS will still issue checks to taxpayers who cannot provide banking information, refunds could take longer in those instances. The IRS will first request their electronic deposit information or an explanation for why they can't provide it.

If the taxpayer doesn't respond to the IRS' letter, and their return has no outstanding issues, a check will be issued after six weeks.

4 highlights from Google CEO Sundar Pichais talk at the AI Impact Summit 2026 in India

Thu, 02/19/2026 - 13:32

The AI Impact Summit 2026 is currently underway in New Delhi, India. Some of the biggest tech companies in the world are in attendance to speak about the state of artificial intelligence, including Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who spoke at the event on Thursday.

Pichai had some interesting things to say in his speech, and you can read a transcript of Pichai's prepared remarks at the Google blog. The prepared remarks differ slightly from the live speech, which was posted to YouTube by Reuters.

1. New connections between the U.S. and India — literally

Google is building a "vast network of subsea fiber optic cables," according to Pichai.

Google's undersea cable network may not be entirely new, but the company's investments in expansion are. Pichai shared that Google is creating a "full-stack AI hub" as part of the company's $15 billion infrastructure investment in India. This includes four new subsea fiber optic cable systems that are part of Google's America-India Connect Initiative.

2. Like SpaceX, Google is exploring sending data centers into space.

The idea of data centers orbiting the Earth just got a quick mention from Pichai, but it is still notable, as Elon Musk recently said this idea was one of the primary reasons his space exploration company, SpaceX, acquired his AI company, xAI.

While discussing previously unimaginable technological advances in India, where Pichai grew up and went to school, the Google CEO mentioned how he also never imagined he'd "one day be spending time with teams figuring out how to put data centers into space."

As Mashable covered when Musk was floating the idea, we are in very early days for the concept, but it's certainly interesting to hear that Google is having similar discussions.

3. Novel uses for AI in medicine

Pichai also spent some time discussing the use of AI for medical purposes and new drug discovery. For example, Pichai highlighted Google DeepMind's AlphaFold, an AI system that predicts a protein's 3D structure from its amino acid sequence. It's notable that, at least in the U.S., works produced by AI are not copyrightable so there's still question over who would own the patent. Yet, Google's CEO highlighted this aspect of AI regardless.

4. How Google thinks about AI responsibility

And that brings us to Pichai's closing, which heavily focused on AI responsibility. Responsible AI has become a cliche in the tech world, especially considering AI's very real dangers, both social and otherwise. However, Pichai said Google has made moves to address such issues.

For example, to fight deepfakes, AI content generated by Google's platforms features an invisible SynthID embedded into the output, which makes it possible to ID the content as AI-generated. Pichai also mentioned the importance of "navigating profound economic shifts" as "AI will undeniably reshape the workforce." Pichai mentioned how the company has been providing AI training to users as well as highlighting the important role governments can and will play in regulating the technology.

Google releases Gemini 3.1 Pro: Benchmark performance, how to try it

Thu, 02/19/2026 - 13:26

Google released its latest core reasoning model, Gemini 3.1 Pro, on Thursday. Google says that Gemini 3.1 Pro achieved twice the verified performance of 3 Pro on ARC-AGI-2, a popular benchmark that measures a model's logical reasoning.

Google originally released Gemini 3 and 3 Pro in November, and this new release shows just how fast AI companies are introducing new and updated models. Gemini 3.1 Pro is the new core model powering Gemini and various Google AI tools, such as Gemini 3 Deep Think. Google says it's designed to provide more creative solutions.

"3.1 Pro is designed for tasks where a simple answer isn't enough, taking advanced reasoning and making it useful for your hardest challenges," a Google blog post states. "This improved intelligence can help in practical applications — whether you’re looking for a clear, visual explanation of a complex topic, a way to synthesize data into a single view, or bringing a creative project to life."

SEE ALSO: GPT-5.2 vs Gemini 3 — How the two heavyweight models compare on benchmarks, price, and feature set

Here's everything we know so far about Gemini 3.1 Pro, including how it compares to the latest models from Anthropic and OpenAI, and how to try it yourself.

How to try Gemini 3.1 Pro

Starting today, Google is rolling out Gemini 3.1 Pro in the Gemini App, the Gemini APIA, and in Notebook LM. Free users will be able to try 3.1 Pro in the Gemini app, but paid users on Google AI Pro and AI Ultra plans will have higher usage rates. Within Notebook LM, only these paid users will have access to 3.1 Pro, at least, for now. Coders and enterprise users can also access the new core model via developers and enterprises can access 3.1 through AI Studio, Antigravity, Vertex AI, Gemini Enterprise, Gemini CLI, and Android Studio.

Gemini 3.1 Pro was already available for Mashable editors using Gemini. To try it for yourself, head to Gemini on desktop or open the Gemini mobile app.

When Google released Gemini 3 Pro in November, the model was so impressive that it allegedly caused OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to declare a code red. As Gemini 3 Pro surged to the top of AI leaderboards, OpenAI reportedly started losing ChatGPT users to Gemini. The latest core ChatGPT model, GPT-5.2, has tumbled down the rankings on leaderboards like Arena (formerly known as LMArena), losing significant ground to competitors such as Google, Anthropic, and xAI.

Gemini 3 Pro was already outperforming GPT-5.2 on many benchmarks, and with a more advanced thinking model, Gemini could move even further ahead.

Gemini 3.1 Pro: Benchmark performance

Google released benchmark performance data showing that Gemini 3.1 Pro outperforms previous Gemini models, Claude Sonnet 4.6, Claude Opus 4.6, and GPT-5.2. However, OpenAI's new coding model, GPT-5.3-Codex, beat Gemini 3.1 Pro on the verified SWE-Bench Pro benchmark, according to Google itself.

Notable highlights from Gemini 3.1 Pro's benchmark results include:

  • 44.4 percent on Humanity's last exam, compared to 40.0 percent for Claude Opus 4.6 and 34.5 percent for GPT-5.2

  • 77.1 percent on ARC-AGI-2, compared to 31.1 percent for Gemini 3 Pro, 68.8 percent for Claude Opus 4.6, and 52.9 percent for GPT-5.2

  • 94.3 percent on GPQA Diamond, compared to 91.9 percent for Gemini 3 Pro, 91.3 percent for Claude Opus 4.6, and 92.4 percent for GPT-5.2

  • 80.6 percent on SWE-Bench Verified, compared to 76.2 percent for Gemini 3 Pro, 80.8 percent for Claude Opus 4.6, and 80.0 percent for GPT-5.2

  • 54.2 percent on SWE-Bench Pro (Public), compared to 43.3 percent for Gemini 3 Pro, 55.6 percent for GPT-5.2, and 56.8 percent for GPT-5.3-Codex

  • 92.6 percent on MMLU, compared to 91.1 percent for Claude Opus 4.6 and 89.6 percent for GPT-5.2

Toy Story 5 trailer: Woody and Buzz reunite to save Bonnie from becoming an iPad kid

Thu, 02/19/2026 - 13:18

When we last left the Toy Story gang, Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks) and Bo Peep (voiced by Annie Potts) had split off from the rest of the crew in order to help the abandoned toys of the world. Now, in Pixar's upcoming Toy Story 5, they've returned to 8-year-old Bonnie's (voiced by Scarlett Spears) house in order to save her from a new technological threat.

SEE ALSO: 'Toy Story 5' teaser pits toys against their biggest enemy yet: An iPad

The technology in question is a tablet device named Lilypad (voiced by Greta Lee). Bonnie is instantly smitten, spending all her time gazing at the screen instead of inventing new stories with her toys. How will the low-tech toys take on a high-tech toy who is, quite literally, always listening to their every word?

Toy Story 5's latest trailer teases this growing conflict, seeing toys like Jessie (voiced by Joan Cusack) and Buzz Lightyear (voiced by Tim Allen) feeling increasingly abandoned. The trailer also reveals Woody's new look as a more adventuresome toy. He's rocking a poncho now, as well as a bald spot, which answers a question I never even knew I had about toy patent balding.

In addition to Toy Story mainstays like Woody and Buzz, Toy Story 5 will also introduce new toys. New characters include potty training toy Smarty Pants (voiced by Conan O'Brien), hippo GPS Atlas (voiced by Craig Robinson), cheerful camera Snappy (voided by Shelby Rabara), and tech-fearing Dr. Nutcase (voiced by Matty Matheson). Will these toys play nice with the rest of the crew?

Toy Story 5 hits theaters June 19.

As of Feb. 19, the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 is on sale at Amazon for $439, marked down from the normal price of $499. That's a 13% discount that shaves $64 off the price. It's also the lowest price we've ever seen at Amazon.

Mashable Tech Editor Timothy Beck Werth got to review the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 and wrote, "The new DJI Osmo Pocket 3 gimbal camera should replace whatever vlogging camera you're currently using." It's waterproof, durable, lightweight, has motion stabilization, and DJI makes it a breeze to upload footage.

DJI equipped the Osmo Pocket 3 with a one-inch CMOS sensor which is an asset when filming in low-light situations. It'll record your content in 4K and that includes the slow-motion feature that captures at 120fps in 4K. There's also object and face tracking that make this vlogging camera a breeze for everyone from beginners to experienced pros.

The two-inch screen on the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 can sit either horizontally or vertically on the gimbal, making it ideal for all types of recording. The three-axis stabilization is also awesome for getting smooth footage without extra effort.

The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 is priced at $499 and Beck Werth noted, "If you're a full- or part-time video creator, livestreamer, or influencer, then the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 is definitely worth the price of admission." But now that the vlogging camera is on sale for a record-low price of $435, it's an even better deal. Snag it before this sale price vanishes.

Amazon shuts down Blue Jay warehouse robot project after less than a year

Thu, 02/19/2026 - 12:20

Last October, Amazon announced Blue Jay, a new robotic arm system that was supposed to act as "an extra set of hands" for its warehouse workers. This week, Amazon decided Blue Jay is no longer needed.

The news was reported first by Business Insider and then corroborated by TechCrunch. Blue Jay was meant to be a multi-arm helper system for same-day delivery facilities, and it was being tested in South Carolina at the time of its announcement last fall. After six months, though, Amazon is winding down project Blue Jay and moving its core tech and employees to other projects.

While this was not made explicitly clear when Blue Jay was first announced, an Amazon spokesperson told TechCrunch that it was always meant as a prototype.

“We’re always experimenting with new ways to improve the customer experience and make work safer, more efficient, and more engaging for our employees,” the spokesperson told TechCrunch. “In this case, we’re actually accelerating the use of the underlying technology developed for Blue Jay, and nearly all of the technologies are being carried over and will continue to support employees across our network.”

Blue Jay was not the only warehouse robotics initiative Amazon has under its belt, and it won't be the last. But for whatever reason, this one just didn't work out as planned.

Google Maps looks different for some users in big change

Thu, 02/19/2026 - 12:16

Google Maps has potentially rolled out a change that could vastly change the user experience, depending on whether you're logged in to a Google account.

Google-focused tech website 9to5Google spotted a change where non-logged-in users apparently now get a "limited view" version of Maps, which is missing lots of key features, including displays of nearby businesses, more detailed info on nearby attractions, and user reviews. In "limited view" mode, for instance, when clicking on a restaurant — which doesn't display on the side of the page — users wouldn't get key info like user reviews, busiest hours, or dine-in/take-out status, 9to5Google noted.

As is often the case with such changes, users posted about noticing the change on Reddit.

There are some indications that perhaps the change could be a glitch of some sort, rather than a wholesale shift. Tech site Tom's Guide noted an error message received by some users indicated the issue could be network problems, a Chrome extension, or other problems. The error message does state that the issues could be fixed by logging in. The writer for Tom's Guide noted, however, that they saw a stripped-back version of Maps while logged out with no error message.

Mashable has reached out to Google and will update this story with any clarification or further details.

Crime 101s Chris Hemsworth and Halle Berry play our new mash-up game

Thu, 02/19/2026 - 12:16

In Crime 101, Chris Hemsworth and Halle Berry play a game of cat and mouse, as his mastermind jewel thief and her fed-up insurance broker plot a heist that's drawing the attention of a determined detective (Mark Ruffalo) and a mercurial robber (Barry Keoghan). So, what better way to toast the latest crime thriller from writer/director Bart Layton than to play a new game?

Entertainment Editor Kristy Puchko sat down with Hemsworth and Berry for a portmanteau game. She's combined the plotlines of two movies whose titles share a word in common. Can these stars name the new mashed-up titles?

Here are a few of the challenges put before the Crime 101 stars. Can you find the answer faster than them? As a bonus clue: One movie in each mash-up stars Halle Berry or Chris Hemsworth.

  • Chris Hemsworth and Halle Berry co-star in a heist thriller about a non-violent thief facing off against a fur-loving fashionista named Cruella de Vil.

  • This superhero sequel from director Brett Ratner follows Wolverine, Storm, and four young boys as they learn life lessons while searching for the body of a missing kid. Adapted from a Stephen King novel, River Phoenix co-stars.

  • An all-girls a cappella group must survive a deadly pair of honeymooners in this musical thriller, where Chris Hemsworth appears as a mysterious hitchhiker.

  • Kevin Kline won an Oscar for his comedic turn as an apoplectic jewel thief called Otto in this cyber-thriller, which co-stars Halle Berry and John Travolta.

  • A fairy tale princess and an iconic comedian collide in this action-packed reimagining of the life of Andy Kaufman.

For the answers, watch the video above.

Crime 101 is now playing in theaters.

Pressure trailer: Andrew Scott and Brendan Fraser star in stormy World War II drama

Thu, 02/19/2026 - 11:57

Did you know that a weather forecast almost changed the course of World War II?

That's the true story at the heart of upcoming drama Pressure, directed by Anthony Maras and starring Andrew Scott and Academy Award winner Brendan Fraser. Maras co-wrote the film with David Haig.

SEE ALSO: 'House of the Dragon' Season 3 teaser gives fiery glimpse of the Battle of the Gullet

Fraser plays General Dwight D. Eisenhower, who's just 72 hours out from launching the D-Day invasion of Normandy. It will be the largest seaborne invasion in history, and it could secure victory for the Allied Forces in their fight against the Axis.

For the landings to go smoothly, though, Eisenhower and the tens of thousands of Allied troops will need perfect conditions. Enter Captain James Stagg (Scott), a British meteorologist. Eisenhower asks him to provide the forecast for D-Day, and Stagg's findings are less than encouraging.

As the film's trailer shows, according to Stagg, two aggressive storms are approaching. If the Allies go through with the invasion now, the Axis forces will be the least of their concerns — it's really Mother Nature they should be worrying about. Now, Eisenhower is faced with a difficult choice. If he continues with D-Day as is, he risks failure in the face of the storms. If he delays the invasion, he could risk the fate of the entire war. The pressure is on — and I'm not just talking about the air pressure in the storm systems.

Pressure also stars Kerry Condon, Chris Messina, and Damian Lewis.

Pressure opens in theaters May 29.
