Get our favorite MacBook for most people for under $1,000

Mashable - Tue, 01/13/2026 - 10:21

SAVE $200: As of Jan. 13, the 15-inch Apple M4 MacBook Air base model (with 16GB RAM and 256GB SSD) is back down to just $999 at Amazon and Best Buy. That's 17% off its list price and just $50 away from its best price ever.

If you're looking to upgrade your laptop without breaking the bank, the M4 MacBook Air is an incredible value at full price. When it debuted in early 2025, we were delighted by its price tag. While everything has been getting more expensive, the base model M4 Air is shockingly $100 cheaper than its predecessor. And as of Jan. 13, you can get it for even cheaper.

The 15-inch Apple MacBook Air with the M4 chip, 16GB RAM and 256GBG of storage usually goes for $1,199, but right now it's back down to just $999 at both Amazon and Best Buy in every color. That's $200 or 17% off its list price of $1,199 and just $50 shy of its lowest price on record.

While we love the 13-inch M4 MacBook Air for students and bargain shoppers, we think the 15-inch model is really Apple's sweet spot for most people. Not only is it our favorite MacBook in the lineup, but it's also one of our favorite laptops from 2025, period. "It's beautiful, long-lasting, unexpectedly peppy, and priced very fairly, making it super easy to recommend for basically anyone wanting a near-perfect ultraportable," Mashable Senior Shopping Reporter Haley Henschel writes.

The M4 Air's power is wildly impressive; it notched a multi-core score of 14,992 in Geekbench 6's CPU test, our primary speed benchmark. That's less than two percent slower than the M4 Pro. Mashable's reviewer called it "almost overkill." The 2025 laptop also includes an upgraded 12MP FaceTime camera and open-lid support for two external displays, so you can still use its own screen when it's hooked up to monitors.

It's hardly the first time the M4 MacBook Air has dropped below $1,000, but we still consider it one of the best deals you can get on an Apple laptop.

Connor Storrie shares a surprising Heated Rivalry story in Seth Meyers interview

Mashable - Tue, 01/13/2026 - 09:55

If you haven't already been charmed by Heated Rivalry's Connor Storrie, chances are you're living under a rock.

SEE ALSO: A new 'Heated Rivalry' book is on the way — preorder 'Unrivaled' by Rachel Reid now

Storrie and his co-star Hudson Williams have been on a massive press run following the show's runaway success, doing everything from presenting at the Golden Globes to making their respective debuts on late night TV. Williams stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Jan. 7, and on Jan. 13, Storrie appeared on Late Night With Seth Meyers.

During the interview, Storrie and Meyers chat about his overnight stardom and the skills he learned for the show. As Russian hockey star Ilya Rozanov, Storrie had to learn several scenes in Russian, as well as perfect a Russian accent, a process that involved taking four hour-long lessons every day for a month and a half.

"I fully just assumed they had found a Russian-speaking actor for this part," Meyers told Storrie.

Apparently, so did some of Heated Rivalry's Russian actors. Storrie recalled shooting a scene with several Russian background actors, one of whom approached him as he reset for a take and began to talk to him in Russian.

"She thought my parents were Russian, and I speak Russian at home with a pseudo-American accent," he said.

Now, Storrie has a prepared response for people who believe he's actually fluent in Russian: "My go-to, I always say in Russian, 'I speak Russian really poorly.'"

However, according to Storrie, learning Russian was nowhere near as tricky as learning how to skate. To hear more about his skating experiences and his breakout fame post-Heated Rivalry, check out the full interview above.

Heated Rivalry is now streaming on HBO Max.

Microsofts Copilot is coming for your File Explorer

Mashable - Tue, 01/13/2026 - 09:51

You thought File Explorer was safe from AI? You were wrong.

Windows hacker/leaker @phantomofearth (via Windows Central) recently noticed that Microsoft is testing adding Microsoft's AI assistant, Copilot, to Windows File Explorer.

Discovered in a preview build of Windows 11, an invisible button lodged in the File Explorer will (likely) allow you to "Chat with Copilot."

We don't know how the button will be used, exactly, but it's likely to allow users to get Copilot's help on a document they've selected in File Explorer.

File Explorer already allows users to invoke Copilot through the right click contextual menu. A dedicated button would integrate the AI assistant even deeper with File Explorer.

Phantomofearth also shared a Windows screenshot with two Copilot prompts showing up in the Taskbar.

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

While this is likely a bug, users immediately started making fun of Microsoft, calling the new OS "Winslop 11." The fact is, a lot of people simply don't want AI being omnipresent in the software they use every single day, but this probably won't stop Microsoft from adding Copilot to yet another key part of Windows.

Copilot recently made headlines as LG started forcing it onto some of its smart TVs, though the company did ultimately relent, promising it will allow users to delete unwanted Copilot shortcuts.

The Pokémon TCG: Collector Chest is finally around market price on Amazon

Mashable - Tue, 01/13/2026 - 08:23

TL;DR: The Fall 2025 edition of the Pokémon TCG Collector chest is now only $37.10 at Amazon. That's 36% off its $57.99 list price.

Pokémon TCG’s inflated pricing due to short supply is not going anywhere, so sometimes the best bargains come from collections you wouldn’t expect. In this case, it’s the latest Collector Chest becoming more affordable. As of Jan. 13, you can buy the Pokémon TCG’s Fall 2025 Collector Chest for just $37.10 at Amazon, with $20.89 chopped off its price of $57.99. That brings it to just $2.50 over its current market price on TCGPlayer.

The lowest-price listing on TCGplayer is for $65.15 when shipping is added on, making Amazon's listing a bargain comparatively.

The Collector Chest contains the following:

  • A mixture of six booster packs — based on the imagery, it looks like three Mega Evolution, two of Journey Together, and one Destined Rivals, but the contents may differ with each chest

  • Three foil promo cards of Ralts, Kirlia, and Riolu

  • One Mega Lucario Pokémon coin

  • Four sticker sheets

  • A mini portfolio to store your cards ineaper in the past, but the ever-shrinking quantity from its limited supply has been driving the prices up. That’s especially true of the included Destined Rivals packs — a hit expansion from May 2025 with restocks that have been rarer than the newer Mega Evolution expansion.

In a market where you currently need to pay upwards of $50 for a booster bundle containing six packs of in-demand Pokémon trading card expansions, like Phantasmal Flames — $37 for the same amount plus promo cards, a coin, and a mini portfolio and tin to store them all in is an amazing deal by comparison.

Granted, the six boosters are a mixture of three different expansions rather than one, but if you’re like most Pokémon TCG collectors who are trying to complete multiple sets, this is a must-buy.

Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws didn’t set the gaming world on fire at its high launch price of $69.99 in 2024, but when on sale, it’s undoubtedly going to sell faster than Kessel-mined Spice.

As of Jan. 13, you can buy Amazon’s exclusive Star Wars Outlaws - Limited Edition on PS5 for only $19.99 — a huge 60% discount on the retailer’s current list price of $49.95. The Xbox Series X version is still available, but for a much larger $42.49.

As for what comes with the Limited Edition game, along with the Star Wars Outlaws base game, you’ll also get the Kessel Runner Bonus pack (cosmetic skins for your ship and speeder bike) and the Rogue Infiltrator Character pack — featuring some decent outfits for both Kay and her pet sidekick Nix.

Despite the fact that the Star Wars game didn’t sell very well compared to expectations (around a million copies in its first month, lower than expected for the franchise), Star Wars Outlaws has finally been growing in players thanks to the combination of various quality-of-life updates and multiple price drops offering great value for money.

After all, Star Wars Outlaws was always a decent game altogether; even now, it has a favorable review score of 75 on Metacritic. When I played and reviewed it for another site, it was a good time with an actually fun story — it just wasn’t $70-good.

At the time of writing, Amazon had marked the game’s product page with “deal selling fast”, showing us that this price is more than the sweet spot for fans. This is definitely the lowest price we’ll see for the Limited Edition of Star Wars Outlaws, so be sure to grab it if you’re on the fence.

If you’re adding more to your backlog, you can also grab the hit 2025 shooter Battlefield 6 for $30 off on Amazon. You can also buy the Silent Hill 2 remake on PS5 for just $27.39 at Amazon.

Jimmy Kimmel spends 2 minutes breaking down exactly how much the world hates America

Mashable - Tue, 01/13/2026 - 06:59

With everything going on in the world right now – from Trump's recent attack on Venezuela to his threats over GreenlandJimmy Kimmel has a feeling America isn't too popular.

"You know, I hate to break it to you guys, but we, the shining beacon of democracy, America — we are the bad guys now. Remember the good old days where people from other countries, eh they thought we were annoying because we talk too loud and we wore cut off shorts into museums, and did chest bumps and wore fanny packs into the Vatican? Sometimes we'd go to Paris and say 'You're welcome for the war'? Well now they hate us for real stuff. Our neighbors hate us, Mexico's mad at us, Canada's mad at us...we're that house at the end of the block where the nice old lady used to live, and then her son-in-law moved in and started letting his dogs run wild and biting children. If this was a movie, this country was once the Karate Kid. Now we're Billy Zabka."

Elsewhere, Jon Stewart also painted a fairly grim world picture on the Daily Show.

If you're an Apple user who's been on the hunt for a desktop computer, Amazon has knocked nearly $100 off the price of the Apple 2024 Mac mini. As of Jan. 13, it's on sale for $499.99.

The Mac mini is normally listed for $599, so this deal saves you $99.01 in total. Fitted with the M4 chip, it's a device that's well worth looking into, especially while it's on sale. Writer Matt Binder even makes the argument that you should get it over the M4 MacBook Pro, if you aren't needing a portable computer to take on the go.

Binder explains that this is because the "base model M4 Mac mini has the exact same specs, but comes with a slightly smaller 256GB SSD drive." Given the Mac mini's usual price of $599, this is "one thousand dollars in savings" over the MacBook Pro. Again, if you're not needing a laptop specifically, it's a great stationary pick with a compact design of just five by five inches.

Alongside the M4 chip, 10‑core CPU, 10‑core GPU, and 256GB SSD, it also features Thunderbolt, HDMI, and Gigabit Ethernet ports on the back and, on the front, USB-C ports and a headphone jack.

Moon phase today: What the Moon will look like on January 13

Mashable - Tue, 01/13/2026 - 06:32

We're almost halfway through the month, and we're nearing the end of the current lunar cycle. It's day 24, which means the moon is slowly disappearing. By the 29th day, there'll be nothing to see at all.

There's still a glimpse to see tonight, however, so dust off any viewing gear and head outside to see what you can spot.

What is today’s Moon phase?

As of Tuesday, Jan. 13, the Moon phase is Waning Crescent. According to NASA's Daily Moon Guide, 24% of the Moon will be lit up tonight.

If you don't have any viewing gear, not to worry, there's still features to be spotted with just your naked eye. These include the Kepler Crater and the Oceanus Procellarum. If you have a pair of binoculars, these will help you to see these plus the Grimaldi Basin and the Mare Humorum. Lucky moon-gazers will a telescope will see all of this and catch extra sightings of the Apollo 12 landing spot and the Schiller Crater.

When is the next Full Moon?

The next Full Moon will be on Feb. 1. The last full moon was on Jan. 3.

What are Moon phases?

According to NASA, the Moon takes about 29.5 days to complete a full orbit, a period known as the lunar cycle. As it moves around Earth, the Moon goes through a series of eight distinct phases. The same side of the Moon always faces our planet, but the sunlight hitting it changes depending on its position in orbit. This is why the Moon can appear fully lit, partially lit, or completely dark at different times. The eight phases that make up the lunar cycle are:

New Moon - The Moon is between Earth and the sun, so the side we see is dark (in other words, it's invisible to the eye).

Waxing Crescent - A small sliver of light appears on the right side (Northern Hemisphere).

First Quarter - Half of the Moon is lit on the right side. It looks like a half-Moon.

Waxing Gibbous - More than half is lit up, but it’s not quite full yet.

Full Moon - The whole face of the Moon is illuminated and fully visible.

Waning Gibbous - The Moon starts losing light on the right side. (Northern Hemisphere)

Third Quarter (or Last Quarter) - Another half-Moon, but now the left side is lit.

Waning Crescent - A thin sliver of light remains on the left side before going dark again.

Can the Garmin Forerunner 55 replace a personal coach for half-marathon prep?

Mashable - Tue, 01/13/2026 - 06:30

Garmin is one of the most popular brands in the fitness tracker market, and the Forerunner range is particularly popular with runners (I'm a big fan of the Forerunner 955). Designed with running front and center, all the Forerunner watches focus on accurate GPS tracking, detailed performance metrics, and tools that help runners plan, monitor, and adjust their workouts over time.

Watches in the range differ vastly in price as well as what they can offer. There are entry-level models that cover the basics of distance covered and heart rate, as well as more advanced options with features like training readiness, recovery insights, and in-depth performance analytics.

The Forerunner 55 is considered an entry-level watch in the Forerunner range; it has GPS tracking, running-specific stats, and a price point that makes it beginner-friendly. But can it actually replace a personal coach for half-marathon training?

Why the Garmin Forerunner 55 is a great running companion

There are many features built-in to this smartwatch that will aid you in whatever running goal you have in mind. Built-in GPS helps track your distance, pace, and route accurately without needing a phone. Not only does this make it easy to map long training runs and monitor progress, it helps you compare your performance over time. Sometimes the best motivation is seeing how far you've come. GPS also makes stats like pace and elevation far more accurate, so you know exactly what you're running.

And while we should all listen to our bodies first and foremost, the Forerunner 55 comes with a recovery time tool that might be the nudge you need to rest. Admitting you need a rest or deload isn't always easy, especially when you feel like you're on a roll, but if your watch is telling you that you need more hours of recovery, you know you should probably listen. This is a great tool to prevent overtraining, which also reduces your injury risk over time.

Having a real-life coach is a great way to know what to run each day, but your watch can tell you this too. One of the most coach-like features is the daily suggested workouts. Based on your recent runs, pace, and estimated fitness level, the watch recommends what you should do each day, whether an easy recovery run, a tempo session, or intervals. It will even recommend rest days when you're close to overtraining or if you've not slept well. Of course, this won’t replace the super personalized adjustments a real coach might make, but it is a practical (and affordable) way to keep your training on track.

SEE ALSO: Oura Ring vs. Whoop: A fight of the best fitness trackers

The race predictor feature is also a great training tool. This is a stat that uses your recent performance and VO₂ max data to estimate finish times for common distances, including the half marathon. This is a motivating tool but it also gives you a realistic benchmark as you train. The watch also includes PacePro, which uses pacing strategies to help you stick to your target effort by guiding you through splits and pacing zones during a run. Use this during tempo sessions or interval workouts to help you hit your paces.

Can the Garmin Forerunner 55 replace a running coach?

The Garmin Forerunner 55 has plenty of features to support your training, making it a great companion if you’re running for enjoyment or general fitness. However, for those with a more ambitious running goal, a running coach can provide personalized guidance, tailored workouts, and personal adjustments that a watch can’t replicate. For most casual or beginner runners, the Forerunner 55 is more than enough to shave seconds off your PR.

Where to buy the Garmin Forerunner 55

You can purchase the Garmin Forerunner 55 at many retailers, including Walmart and Best Buy. Prices vary through the year, but as of Jan. 13, it is on sale for $149 at Amazon.

Jon Stewart summarises the current state of the world in 20 minutes

Mashable - Tue, 01/13/2026 - 06:05

The world, as Jon Stewart describes it in his latest Daily Show monologue, is currently "a confusing, dark place."

In the 20-minute video above, the host unpacks recent events, from ICE's fatal shooting of 37-year-old woman Renee Good in Minneapolis to Trump's attack on Venezuela and threats to Greenland.

"In America today, Donald Trump is the sun — and if you revolve around him and worship him his warmth shines upon you," Stewart concludes. "You could shoot someone on 5th avenue and not lose his support, as long as it's done on his behalf. But if you do not support him – if you live in the darkness of what I guess we will refer to from now on as blue states, fearing the day he turns his wrath towards you – whether you're a single human woman on a side street somewhere in Minneapolis, or a sovereign nation that happens to have land an resources we, a larger sovereign nation, think we also might want.

"And so his people are making a bet: that adhering to a principle of forced compliance and coercion will give us a more stable and prosperous America than a principle of shared alliance and common interest. It's kind of a tough bet, because I read somewhere – I don't know where – that people have inalienable rights granted by a creator, not a king. So holding that coerced world together is going to be kind of a tall task."
