The Hisense 55-inch Canvas art TV is down to a new best price ever post-Spring Sale

Mashable - Wed, 04/01/2026 - 11:20

SAVE $400: As of April 1, the Hisense 55-inch Canvas QLED 4K TV is down to only $599.99 at Amazon. That's 40% off its list price and a new best price ever.

The Amazon Big Spring Sale delivered plenty of excellent TV deals, but budget-friendly brand Hisense isn't playing by the rules. While the brand (which is one of our favorites, BTW) did drop prices over the last week, it waited until the sale was officially over to give us its best prices ever on several TV models — including the coveted Canvas art TV.

As of April 1, the Hisense 55-inch Canvas QLED 4K TV is down to just $599.99 at Amazon. That's 40% or $400 off its list price and a new lowest price on record. For those curious, the same TV was $87.98 more during the Spring Sale.

The Canvas TV is an alternative to the popular Samsung The Frame TV for budget-conscious shoppers. Like The Frame, it transforms a basic black box into a stylish piece of artwork that hangs on your wall. Its matte finish allows it to blend seamlessly into a gallery wall with other non-tech wall hangings. Unlike The Frame, it uses Google TV's interface, which Mashable's Miller Kern (a Canvas TV owner) says is "way more intuitive and responsive than Samsung's."

Beyond doubling as artwork, the Hisense Canvas is a QLED TV, so it's noticeably brighter and more saturated than a basic LED TV. It'll look brilliant in any lighting conditions. It also features a variable refresh rate up to 144Hz, which is surprisingly good for gaming, real-time adaptive brightness and color temperature, and an ultra-slim wall mount that lies flush against the wall for the true framed art look.

Krispy Kreme is celebrating NASAs Artemis II mission with a new space-themed doughnut — how to try

Mashable - Wed, 04/01/2026 - 09:54

We know there is an awful lot going on in the world right now, but we shouldn't forget that humans are actually heading back into space. That's a big deal.

To mark the launch of NASA’s Artemis II mission — the first crewed flight to the Moon in over 50 years — Krispy Kreme has dropped a limited-edition doughnut that looks out of this world. It's a classic Original Glazed doughnut that's dipped in blue vanilla-flavored icing and topped with OREO crunch and white nonpareil stars. It's finished with a cookies-and-cream buttercream dollop and a red icing chevron — a sweet nod to the NASA logo.

View this post on Instagram

You can find these limited-edition doughnuts in-shop at participating shops nationwide or you can order for pickup or delivery through the Krispy Kreme app and website. The Artemis II doughnut is available through April 2 — don't miss out on this chance to celebrate this momentous occasion.

A24s Mother Mary trailer is worth it for the FKA twigs track

Mashable - Wed, 04/01/2026 - 09:50

A24's latest look at David Lowery's upcoming film Mother Mary gives us more of an idea of what to expect when you blend Anne Hathaway and FKA twigs into a pop star dream.

In the trailer above, you can hear Hathaway's vocals on the film's second single, "My Mouth Is Lonely For You," written by the iconic English singer-songwriter; the first track "Burial" was unveiled in March. It's a bit of a moment for pop star-related A24 films right now, with the Mother Mary soundtrack not only including tracks written by FKA twigs but also Charli xcx and Jack Antonoff. The Mother Mary: Greatest Hits album arrives Apr. 17, just before the film releases, and I'll personally be blasting it loud enough to either help or very much hinder the marketing team's work.

Of course, the visuals mean everything here too, as the trailer shows The Devil Wears Prada 2 headliner as eponymous pop star Mother Mary, who reconnects with her best friend, costume designer Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel), before returning to the stage after a hiatus. Hathaway and Coel lead a formidable cast including Hunter Schafer, Atheena Frizzell, Sian Clifford, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Isaura Barbé-Brown, and Alba Baptista.

Mother Mary hits cinemas April 24.

Mashable - Wed, 04/01/2026 - 09:27

For the second year in a row, Dunkin’ is giving away an enormous number of free coffees to celebrate April Fools' Day. How many, we hear you ask. Last year, Dunkin' promised to give away a million free coffees, but a lot of people thought it was a prank. View this post on Instagram

What's great about this free giveaway is that it's actually free. There's no qualifying purchase or sneaky catch that requires you to jump through hoops. You just need to enter a code and away you go. That's how it should be.

Apple celebrates 50th birthday with homepage animation

Mashable - Wed, 04/01/2026 - 09:08

Today, April 1, 2026 (no joke), is Apple's 50th birthday.

The company was launched by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne on this day in 1976, essentially to market Wozniak's visionary Apple I personal computer.

Since then, it's grown into one of the largest, most successful companies ever created, with Apple products an important part of the lives of billions of people worldwide.

SEE ALSO: Everything Apple stopped selling in March. See the list.

To mark the occasion, the company did a little takeover of its own website, which now features a colorful animation highlighting some of Apple's most important products, from the earliest Macs all the way to the new Vision Pro.

"At 50 years, it’s only natural to look back. But Apple has always looked forward, building tools and delivering experiences that enrich people’s lives. As we celebrate how far we’ve come, we’re inspired by where we’ll go — together," says the text accompanying the animation.

Of course, this is by no means all that Apple is doing to celebrate. The company recently announced that the festivities will be held over several weeks. So far, Apple has made good on that promise with a series of surprise concerts, including a performance by Alicia Keys at Apple Grand Central in New York City.

Tinders fake height verification is now a real feature on another app

Mashable - Wed, 04/01/2026 - 07:44

An April Fool's joke from Tinder in 2019 is now real.

Seven years ago, Tinder joked that it was adding height verification to its app. Now, in 2026, the matchmaking app Tenr has made that a reality.

SEE ALSO: 8 best dating apps and sites for singles in their 40s and up

"People care about height, and the app is all about not BS-ing and giving information up front," said Adam Moelis, the founder of Tenr. (Moelis also co-founded fintech company Yotta. In 2024, thousands of Yotta customers were locked out of their accounts and unable to access their money due to the failure of one of its banking partners. It appears that many customers are still locked out of their Yotta accounts as of this writing.)

What is Tenr?

Tenr is a matchmaking app that aims, as Moelis said, to cut the BS in dating. The fundamental idea is that it doesn't take a two or three-hour date to know if you're interested in someone, but only ten minutes. Users sign up, answer questions about themselves and their preferences, and Tenr "crunches the information" to give three to five matches a day. From there, you have a ten-minute date the app calls a "Tenr," and each party decides whether to meet in person.

AI helps screen people, but it's not the core feature of Tenr, Moelis said. "I don't think AI is good at assessing chemistry, and I think that's probably the most important thing in dating. It's like, do you guys have an energy match? Do you have chemistry? And I think AI can't do that right now. You still need the interaction with the other person." Hence, ten-minute dates.

How does the app verify height?

But back to height. Moelis is right: Height is important to people. For years, people have lamented that women want to date tall guys. Women have even used ChatGPT to catch men lying about it, and Tinder started testing a paid height preference last year. (Tinder told Mashable there isn't an update since then.) Hinge lets users select a height filter and there's even a "deal breaker" option that you can toggle if you're not open to seeing any profiles that don't fit your preferences.

I, for one, believe that we as a society need to stop obsessing about height in dating, but the preoccupation persists. And now, an app is getting in on it and using Apple's Measure app to ensure accuracy. (iPhone models 12 and up use LiDAR scanners — Light Detection and Ranging — to produce accurate measurements.)

"We thought it would be kind of a fun feature," Moelis said. "No other dating app is doing that because it's a little bit controversial, but we think it matters to people."

Here's how height verification works on Tenr: Using the LiDAR scanner on the iPhone camera, a friend can hold the phone and point it at you. It's pretty accurate — plus or minus an inch, said Moelis.

The feature went live a few weeks ago, and it's getting a fair amount of use. Moelis is actually surprised by the lack of negative reaction. Over 700 users have verified their heights so far (and the app is close to 6,000 sign-ups since May 2025).

Height verification, of course, isn't the app's only feature. Moelis also mentioned the Wingman, in which users can recruit friends to help choose their photos and leave testimonials about them. But for those who are tired of men lying about a few inches on dating apps, this might be the only way to catch them — before meeting them IRL, that is.

Apple to issue emergency patch to protect iPhones from DarkSword spyware

Mashable - Wed, 04/01/2026 - 07:27

If you needed more proof of just how bad the DarkSword spyware is, Apple is about to issue a rare patch (via Wired) that addresses the issue on phones running iOS 18.

Why is this rare? Well, typically Apple will simply tell iPhone users to upgrade to the latest version of iOS (that's iOS 26.4 right now). But this time, everyone running iOS 18 on their phones is getting a patch of their own.

DarkSword is a web based tool that enables malicious hackers to steal data from iPhones, and it's publicly available for everyone to use. Apple already patched iOS 26 against DarkSword, but iOS 18 remains unprotected at writing time. As for why anyone would want to run iOS 18, there are folks who are simply slow to update their phone, and then there are those that may not want to switch to Apple's new "Liquid Glass" user interface that debuted in iOS 26.

It's not a small group. A survey by TelemetryDeck indicated that roughly 19 percent of all iPhone users were running iOS 18 at the end of February.

An Apple spokesperson told Wired that the new patch will be issued on Wednesday morning. This patch will not upgrade the phone to iOS 26; instead, users will remain on iOS 18, but will be safe against DarkSword.

Apple, of course, still encourages all users to update to iOS 26 and receive the company's "most advanced protections."

Youtube AI slop is a generational threat, child safety experts warn in new petition

Mashable - Wed, 04/01/2026 - 06:00

Kids are consuming a lot of AI slop.

And child safety advocates are getting worried. In a letter sent to Google CEO Sundar Pichai and YouTube CEO Neil Mohan, a coalition of national organizations and child development experts is demanding a change to YouTube policies to cut down on AI slop, including an outright ban on "Made for Kids" content generated by AI.

"Given the absence of evidence that AI slop is safe for children and the potential for these videos to mesmerize and harm kids, Google must take swift action to protect children on its platforms," the letter reads. Two weeks ago, YouTube announced a partnership with generative AI studio Animaj, which specializes in AI children's content and boasts billions of views across several YouTube channels aimed at infants and babies.

SEE ALSO: We didn't grow up on social media. We grew up on digital nicotine.

The letter, led by child safety nonprofit Fairplay, is signed by organizations like the American Federation of Teachers, the National Black Child Development Association, and Mothers Against Media Addiction (MAMA), as well as experts like Jonathan Haidt, author of the highly cited book The Anxious Generation. The group cites growing concern that exposure to AI content can distort children's perception of reality, cause cognitive overload, and displace real world activities necessary for development.

"First YouTube introduced Shorts with Made For Kids content without wondering what impact it would have on young viewers, and then — no surprise — AI slop started competing for kids’ attention on those very feeds. It’s time for platforms to start respecting the attention and minds of young children, not just treat them as a resource to be extracted," said Jenny Radesky, a developmental behavioral pediatrician and media researcher who also signed onto the letter.

The group also announced a public petition demanding YouTube implement several new safety policies addressing the proliferation of AI slop directed toward children, including:

  • Clearly labeling all AI-generated content on YouTube

  • Barring AI-generated content from YouTube Kids

  • Prohibiting child-focused videos (“Made for Kids”) on YouTube that are AI-generated

  • Prohibiting algorithmic recommendations of AI-generated content to users under age 18

  • Implementing a toggle switch in parental controls so that parents can turn off AI-generated content even if children search for it

  • Stopping all investment in the creation of AI-generated videos for children

The letter comes one week after a precedent-defining verdict in a recent case against Meta and YouTube parent company Google, which sided in favor of a 19-year-old user who claimed the companies knew their platforms could be "dangerously addictive" and ignored warnings about user mental health. The Los Angeles jury found that both Meta and YouTube were negligent in addressing internal safety warnings and went forward with platform features that exacerbated expert concerns.

"In some cases, seemingly benign animations can turn out to be sexual or violent in nature," said Sebastian Mahal, co-chair of youth-led lobby coalition Design It For Us. "Young people don’t want to be targeted with this type of experience by YouTube’s algorithm. After a California jury found YouTube liable for failing to protect young people on its platform, one would think YouTube would finally take its responsibility to its young users seriously."

In addition to claims that Instagram's algorithms exacerbated the youth mental health crisis, particularly among teen girls, child safety advocates have long warned that YouTube is a dangerous site for young children.

Rachel Franz, director of Fairplay’s Young Children Thrive Offline program, told Mashable in a March interview: "If 'managing AI slop' was really YouTube's top priority this year, they would have already taken down the millions of AI-generated 'Made for Kids' videos that are designed to entrance young children, leading to more screen time and displacing the activities they need to thrive offline."

YouTube is the most popular video platform for young child viewers, especially among low-income households. Despite efforts to address AI-generated content, YouTube has yet to fully rein in the problem, and AI-generated content aimed at children has become a lucrative business.

A New York Times report found thousands of low-quality AI videos in YouTube's algorithm, including ones that violated child safety policies. Currently, animated videos generated by AI do not require AI labels, and AI labels do not appear consistently on YouTube Kids. YouTube only requires labeling for synthetic media made to mimic "realistic" settings or people.

In response to the new letter, Franz added, "YouTube’s algorithm makes it impossible for kids to avoid AI slop. YouTube must stop shoving AI slop onto children now, before it further damages an entire generation of kids.”

It even features a bagless, self-emptying base that can be filled up over the course of 30 days. That means you don't even have to think about it while it cleans for a whole month.

One of Apple’s First Employees Looks Back at 50 Years

NYT Technology - Wed, 04/01/2026 - 05:02
In 1976, 14-year-old Chris Espinosa rode a moped to his job demonstrating computers made in Steve Jobs’s childhood home. The company has changed a bit since then.

Watch NASAs historic Artemis 2 launch attempt live today. Heres how.

Mashable - Wed, 04/01/2026 - 05:00

NASA is set to send four astronauts on a mission around the moon for the first time in more than 50 years, and viewers can watch the launch countdown live on April 1.

Artemis II is a test flight of the U.S. space agency's Space Launch System rocket and Orion capsule. The mission follows Artemis I, the successful uncrewed inaugural voyage of the spacecraft in 2022.

NASA will stream the launch from Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, on its website, social media, and its YouTube channel. Live coverage of filling the rocket's tanks with fuel is expected to begin at 7:45 a.m. ET Wednesday on Youtube. Viewers can watch the event on NASA+, the space agency's free streaming service, starting at 12:50 p.m. ET.

The broadcast will track the four-person crew — Christina Koch, Victor Glover, Reid Wiseman, and Jeremy Hansen — as they board Orion. The actual two-hour launch window opens at 6:24 p.m. ET.

This mission is designed as a roughly 10-day deep space excursion that will loop around Earth before slingshotting around the moon and returning home. If successful, it would mark a major step toward future missions that aim to land astronauts on the lunar surface and establish a moon base there.

The flight also carries historic milestones. Koch is set to become the first woman to travel to the moon, and Glover the first Black astronaut to do so. Hansen, a Canadian astronaut, would be the first non-American assigned to a lunar mission. Their journey's estimated distance of 248,700 miles also could set a new record for farthest humans have ever traveled from Earth.

Watch the launch livestream here beginning at 7:45 a.m. ET on Wednesday, April 1.

NASA's live coverage typically includes real-time updates from the firing room, views from the launchpad, and commentary explaining each stage of the countdown. The agency will also provide rolling updates on its official Artemis blog.

The forecast so far shows an 80 percent chance of good weather conditions for launch day. Mission managers are mostly concerned about cloud coverage and high winds.

If the launch attempt is called off for weather or technical issues, the agency could try again any day through April 6. There is one other launch opportunity at the end of this month on April 30. NASA has declined to provide future launch windows beyond April to the public.

Tax season has a way of turning every drawer, bag, and random countertop into a paper explosion. Receipts, forms, notes — you know the drill. If you’re trying to get everything organized without losing your mind (or your paperwork), iScanner might be the easiest upgrade you make this year.

You can currently grab a lifetime subscription for just $25.97 (reg. $199.90) through April 12 — and it essentially turns your phone into a full-on document scanner and editor.

With iScanner, you can scan just about anything — tax forms, receipts, IDs, handwritten notes — and instantly convert them into clean, shareable files like PDFs or JPGs. The app automatically detects edges, straightens pages, and even recognizes text in 20+ languages, so you’re not stuck manually fixing every scan.

But it goes beyond scanning. You can sign documents, edit PDFs, merge files, organize everything into folders, and even lock sensitive files with a PIN. It’s especially useful if you’re juggling multiple documents and need everything in one place, fast.

Whether you’re filing taxes, running a small business, or just trying to stay organized, iScanner keeps things simple — and way less paper-heavy.

Another underrated perk? It helps you stay ahead instead of scrambling at the last minute. When everything is already digitized and easy to find, pulling documents for taxes, reimbursements, or audits becomes a quick search instead of a full-on scavenger hunt. It’s the kind of small upgrade that saves you time (and stress) long after tax season is over.

Get lifetime access to iScanner while it’s on sale for just $25.97 (reg. $199.90) through April 12.
