X threatened lawsuits to pressure advertisers into returning, report says

Mashable - Wed, 06/11/2025 - 12:40

A new report from the Wall Street Journal details just how far X owner Elon Musk and CEO Linda Yaccarino have gone to claw back lost ad dollars. The strategy: leverage the courts.

According to the WSJ, Yaccarino and X’s legal team have threatened to pull several major advertisers into their sweeping lawsuit against the World Federation of Advertisers (WFA), accusing the group of orchestrating an industry-wide boycott of the platform. As a result of the mounting legal pressure, the WFA shut down its nonprofit initiative, the Global Alliance for Responsible Media.

The group was designed to help member companies avoid placing ads on platforms that spread harmful content.

When Musk took over the site formerly known as Twitter in 2022, nearly half of its top advertisers bailed. Musk’s overhaul of moderation and verification policies led to the reinstatement of banned far-right accounts and chaos over brand impersonation, thanks to the rollout of paid blue checkmarks without real verification. Then, another report alleged ads were being shown next to pro-Nazi content, so more brands fled. In response, X filed suit against Media Matters for America, the nonprofit that published that report.

Now, the alleged message from X’s leadership is explicit: advertise with us, or risk becoming a defendant.

Some brands, like Verizon and Ralph Lauren, have returned, per the Journal. Verizon has committed to $10 million in ad spend, with a possibility of ramping up to $25 million. Others, including Pinterest, have declined — and now appear as named parties in the WFA suit.

SEE ALSO: The X API costs developers $42K per month. Now X wants a cut of their revenue instead.

Unilever, one of the world’s largest advertisers, was originally included in the lawsuit. A few months later, after pledging an undisclosed ad spend, its name was quietly dropped, the Journal reported.

The push to reel advertisers back in comes as X continues to chase shrinking revenue. According to the report, the platform pulled in just $2.6 billion in 2024, down from $4.6 billion in 2022, the year Musk took over. The xAI merger helped push the numbers up, and X’s ad revenue is expected to grow in 2025 for the first time under Musk’s ownership.

However, it's still projected to fall short of pre-acquisition levels.

Get 3 months of ESPN+ for just $15

Mashable - Wed, 06/11/2025 - 12:27

SAVE $21: Through June 20, ESPN+ is only $4.99 per month for three months, rather than the usual $11.99 per month. That's about 59% in savings and a rare discount for the streamer.

Opens in a new window Credit: ESPN+ ESPN+ $4.99/month for 3 months (save $7/month) Get Deal

Some streaming services, like Peacock and Paramount+, run deals several times a year. Others (*cough* Netflix) rarely, if ever, discount their subscription costs. ESPN+ falls into the rare category, so it's pretty remarkable that you can score a three-month subscription for more than half off as of June 11.

Through June 20, ESPN+ is only $4.99 per month for three months, rather than the usual $11.99 per month. That's $7 in savings each month, or $21 total you get to keep in your pocket. The deal is only available to new ESPN+ subscribers and eligible returning subscribers.

SEE ALSO: How to watch the 2025 U.S. Open live: Where is it streaming?

Of course, once the three-month promotional period ends, the plan will automatically jump back up to full price. Be sure to cancel your subscription prior to that date if you want to avoid the $11.99 charge.

ESPN+ is a standalone service, not a direct live stream of the ESPN network, contrary to popular belief. It does carry select live ESPN, ESPN2, and ABC games from both college and professional teams — including NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, PGA, Premier League, and more. But it also features ESPN+ Originals, like Man in the Arena: Tom Brady, Full Court Press and the Places series, on-demand TV shows and movies, like 30 for 30 and They Call It Late Night with Jason Kelce, and exclusive UFC content, like Fight Nights and pay-per-view events.

I personally use the service to stream out-of-network NHL games all season long and am pleasantly surprised by the sheer number of games I can watch. While I'm not a massive sports fan myself, I still find ESPN+ to be a worthy subscription for that alone. If you are a sports fanatic, you'll be in streaming heaven.

We don't see many deals for ESPN+ outside of the year-round Disney+ bundles, so we highly recommend jumping on this one if you're curious about the sports streaming app.

iOS 26 adds Emoji Game for Apple News+ subscribers

Mashable - Wed, 06/11/2025 - 12:00

The internet has proven time and again that it loves little word puzzle games. Just look at all the wildly popular games from The New York Times.

Now, it appears that Apple is trying to break into that world. iOS 26, which was announced this week at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), includes a new "Emoji Game" for Apple News+ subscribers.

The idea is that you fill in blanks with emoji to complete three phrases. The words or emoji can have double meanings across phrases, so the goal is to solve the puzzle in as few moves as possible.

Here's a preview of what the game will look like.

Credit: Apple

You drag the emoji into the blank spaces in order to solve the puzzle. Folks who are using the iOS 26 beta and are Apple News+ subscribers can start playing the game today. It seems like it'll follow a similar playbook to the NYT's game offerings — a daily, shareable puzzle that tracks your stats.

Wrote Apple in a press release:

"Users can share puzzles, track stats and streaks, and compete with others through Game Center leaderboards. Emoji Game features a daily puzzle available in the U.S. and for English-speaking users in Canada, and can be accessed from the Following tab in the News app."

If people love the Emoji Game, it could prove useful for getting people to subscribe to Apple News‌+. However, at $12.99 per month, it'd have to be a very good game.

OpenAI launches new, smarter model. Meet o3-pro.

Mashable - Wed, 06/11/2025 - 11:28

OpenAI has a new reasoning model called o3-pro that the company says is its most intelligent yet.

On Tuesday the ChatGPT maker announced o3-pro on X, sharing some details on its improvement over o3. OpenAI highlighted better performance in "science, education, programming, data analysis, and writing" and also said reviewers rated it higher on "clarity, comprehensiveness, instruction-following, and accuracy."

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

o3-pro is available in the API and to ChatGPT Pro and Team users, with Enterprise and Edu availability rolling out next week.

OpenAI's o3-pro is the newest addition to its family of reasoning models, which break down tasks into steps for ostensibly more accurate and reliable responses, as opposed to conventional LLMs. In this regard, reasoning models like o3-pro are considered better for complex tasks and OpenAI says o3-pro "excels at math, science, and coding." OpenAI posted benchmark evaluations indicating o3-pro surpasses o1-pro and o3 in these areas.

Researchers from Apple recently found some notable limitations in reasoning models, including OpenAI's o3-mini. When prompted to solve the classic Tower of Hanoi problem, which involves moving discs from one peg to another, the models struggled as complexity increased and even gave up despite having more computing power at their disposal.

The research made waves amongst the AI community as evidence that reasoning models aren't as smart as they're hyped to be. However, experts also pointed out that the research tested a very specific problem, and it didn't compare the results of humans and reasoning models on the same problems. So, it's not a definitive conclusion that AI tools are completely overhyped, but the findings do suggest that they're not necessarily the best models for every kind of task.

o3-pro has access to tools in ChatGPT, including web search, Python, visual analysis of documents, and personalized responses with memory support. But it doesn't support image generation or canvas, OpenAI's interface for working on projects, according to the release notes. Responses will also take longer because o3-pro has access to tools.

Disclosure: Ziff Davis, Mashable’s parent company, in April filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging it infringed Ziff Davis copyrights in training and operating its AI systems.

The viral Ninja Crispi air fryer is currently on sale for its lowest price ever

Mashable - Wed, 06/11/2025 - 11:14

SAVE $20: As of June 11, the Ninja Crispi air fryer is on sale for just $159.99 at Amazon, Best Buy, Kohl's, and on Ninja's website. That's 11% off its $179.99 MSRP and its lowest price on record.

$179.95 Save $20 Get Deal

TikTok hype isn't always a great indicator of a good product, but the viral Ninja Crispi managed to win over Mashable's Samantha Mangino. Fresh off testing a huge batch of Ninja kitchen appliances, she named it her favorite air fryer in the lineup.

"With its portable design, [the Crispi] stores nicely and can be used on the go. Plus, it actually works," Mangino writes. It passed both of her trials with ease, turning tofu cubes into "crunchy perfection" and crisping frozen French fries quickly while keeping them fluffy-soft inside.

The Crispi is a good buy at its usual price of $179.95, but right now it's on sale for less. Amazon, Best Buy, Kohl's, and Ninja's website all have it marked down to $159.95, or $20 off, which is its biggest discount to date. Take your pick from three colors: Stone, Sage Green, or Cyberspace (which Amazon calls Navy and Best Buy calls Gray — go figure). Note that Kohl's throws in $30 worth of Kohl's Cash that you can put toward a future purchase from June 16 to 22.

Mangino tested the Mint-colored Crispi, which wasn't on sale at the time of writing. Credit: Samantha Mangino / Mashable

Mangino admits that she was initially "skeptical" of the Crispi because of its design, which involves a glass basket and an air-frying lid with some controls on it. But beyond heating food well, it also doubles as storage for leftovers — super convenient. "The Ninja Crispi ... allows you to meal prep and store food directly into glass baskets, where you will then reheat it," Mangino writes. "The storage containers are all dishwasher safe, a rare trait in air fryer baskets."

Mangino's main gripe with the Crispi is that it has a limited number of settings compared to other air fryers (i.e., you can't change its temperature). That said, she thinks it's suited for "a variety of foods" as-is. Read her full writeup for more takeaways.

On the book end of things, there are plenty of bestsellers, new releases, and BookTok faves included in the sale, like Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins, Broken Country by Clare Leslie Hall, Great Big Beautiful Life by Emily Henry, and Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros. You can definitely do some damage, as many of the eligible books are also already on sale. For instance, hardcover copies of Onyx Storm and Broken Country are on sale for $17.76 (reg. $29.99) and $16.88 (reg. $28.99), respectively. During the sale, you could grab both for only $34.64 instead of $58.98. If you're a traditional reader who prefers physical books in your hands, this is a good time to pad your TBR list.

As far as games go, you could grab Twister, Operation, Cards Against Humanity, Jumanji, Sorry!, and plenty of other classics. Meanwhile, the music selection includes new releases like Miley Cyrus' Something Beautiful, Morgan Wallen's I'm The Problem, and Turnstile's Never Enough on vinyl, as well as classics like Fleetwood Mac's Rumours and Spice by the Spice Girls.

There are hundreds of thousands of options to choose from in the sale — and you can mix and match as you see fit. Just be sure to shop before the end of the day on June 15 if you want to score a book, album, or game for half price.

Hinge partners with Esther Perel for new prompts

Mashable - Wed, 06/11/2025 - 08:00

Today, Hinge launches new prompts co-created with Esther Perel, psychotherapist and host of the hit podcast Where Should We Begin?

Perel is known for her expertise on sex and relationships. Where Should We Begin? brings listeners into anonymous couples therapy sessions. Perel's bestselling book Mating in Captivity discusses sex in long-term relationships.

SEE ALSO: Best dating apps for singles who want something serious

The 10 new conversation starters, themed "Your World," aim to encourage users to share beyond the typical details on a dating app profile.

  1. In my friend group, I'm the one who...

  2. Something my pet thinks about me...

  3. The kindest thing someone has ever done for me...

  4. An award my family would give me...

  5. You'd never know, but I...

  6. I'm in my element when...

  7. Before we meet, you should listen to...

  8. I could stay up all night talking about...

  9. It's not a vacation unless...

  10. Where I go when I want to feel a little more like myself...

"As a couples therapist, I've spent decades observing relationships at all stages. I've seen that love often starts with an invitation: to talk, to connect, to share stories, to explore the world together. And the right invitations elicit curiosity, inspire playfulness, and break daters out of old scripts," said Perel in the press release.

Hinge is known for its prompts, and earlier this year, the app added AI-powered prompt feedback to encourage more thorough responses. (Mashable has compared AI features on Hinge, Tinder, and Bumble.) Hinge also recently introduced Match Note, a way to share private details with matches that daters may not want to share on a public profile.

Prompts are apparently so successful that other dating apps have started adding similar features. In recent years, both Bumble and Tinder added them as options to user profiles (the latter and Hinge are both owned by the same parent company, Match Group).

Elon Musk on X: I regret some of my posts about Trump

Mashable - Wed, 06/11/2025 - 06:17

Elon Musk is walking it back.

The world's richest man, who just last week cheerfully announced to his 220 million X followers that Donald Trump was "in the Epstein files," has now apparently decided that a feud with the president of the U.S. might not be such a good idea.

"I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week," Musk posted on Wednesday. "They went too far."

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

Musk and Trump's feud began shortly after the former left the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). He'd only been out of the White House for a few days before he started publicly bashing the president's "big beautiful bill", with things quickly escalating on Thursday to the point that Musk was retweeting a call for Trump to be impeached (now un-retweeted) and Trump was threatening Musk's government contracts.

Musk has subsequently deleted the Epstein post, while Trump has said he has no plans to speak to Musk.

But hey — maybe this latest development will repair that once beautiful friendship?

This compact speaker boasts big sound that's perfect for pairing with a Sonos soundbar to create a surround sound system. I've loved using it for movie nights to feel really immersed in what I'm watching. And its compact design is a big positive, too. It can fit in a variety of different spots, which is nice for smaller living spaces so you can slot it into a bookshelf or set it up on the corner of a desk.

Switch 2 smashes Nintendos own record, selling 3.5 million consoles

Mashable - Wed, 06/11/2025 - 05:33

Nintendo sold over 3.5 million Switch 2 consoles globally in four days, according to a company announcement on Wednesday.

Following the highly anticipated midnight launch of the Switch 2 on June 5, Nintendo said the result was "the highest global sales level for any Nintendo hardware within the first four days." According to IGN, the original Switch released in 2017 sold 2.74 million units in its first month.

Nintendo initially expected to sell approximately 15 million Switch 2 consoles by March 2026, but has since bumped the projection up to 20 million units.

The launch of the first Nintendo handheld console in eight years on June 5 saw gamers and tech enthusiasts queuing for hours outside stores including Target, Best Buy, and Walmart to collect their preorders. Not everyone had a gleeful launch day, however, as some customers reportedly found their screens were punctured inside the box.
